We are constantly bombarded with informa-tion about the best way to exercise. How do we know what is fact and what is
fiction? Continue reading and have some of the myths busted.
MUSCLE TURNS INTO FAT-Muscle and fat are completely different types of tissue and have totally different func-tions. One type of tissue cannot turn into another type. When consistent exercise stops, muscle tissue will atrophy (get smaller in size). Calorie burning decreases and fat storage in-creases causing fat cells to get larger.
STRETCH PRIOR TO EXERCISE-Tradi-tionally, people believed stretching functioned as a warm-up and pre-vented injuries. Recent research pub-lished in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine showed static stretching prior to exercise did not prevent
injury and reduced muscle power output. Stretching is most beneficial, and safest, when done after five to ten minutes of light activity (warm up) AND after exercise is completed.
LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS WILL MAKE WOMEN GET BULKY-Women, es-pecially those over 50 years of age, don’t have enough testosterone, the muscle-building hormone, to get bulky. Regular strength training is still very important to maintain age-relat-ed strength, and muscle, loss, and to maintain bone density. In addition, strength training helps boost metabo-lism, improve the hormonal profile, and helps maintain ability to perform daily tasks.
CALORIE READOUT ON EQUIPMENT IS ACCURATE-Research has shown that calorie burn listed on some exercise equipment can overestimate calorie burn by 40 percent. Tread-mills and stationary bikes tend to have more accurate calorie readouts than elliptical machines and other equipment. Factors such as gender and fitness level, play a role in num-
bers of calories burned. To get the most accurate reading for a particular machine, enter age and weight.
ABDOMINAL EXERCISES REDUCE ABDOMINAL FAT- This is the myth of spot reduction. This applies not only to the body’s abdominal region it applies to every part of the body. Location from which fat is burned cannot be controlled. Stored body fat is burned only by creating a deficit of caloric intake vs. caloric burn.
Many times, fitness information we get seems too good to be true. Other times, information is dated and recent research has refuted previous beliefs. Feel free to stop by the office with questions you may have about any fitness information.
