Every year, the reports of fire victims and incidences are appalling. In 2017 alone, the Malaysian Fire andRescue Department (JBPM) reported that 165 people had died and 46 people had been injured in 5,485cases of building structural fire outbreaks nationwide. The fires also destroyed RM3.10 billion worth ofproperties and valuables. Unfortunately, despite the incidents, the society’s level of awareness on thedangers and preprevention of fire has remained low, with most incidences could have been prevented fromoccurring.
As Malaysia strives to become a developed nation within 2 years time by 2020, the local fire safety industrymust achieve a status at par with other developed nations. Every industry player, regulatory body, professional body and standards agency must move forward progressively within the Malaysian fire safetyregulations. Realising the importance of fire safety in Malaysia, the Department of Standards Malaysia(Standards Malaysia) has published MS 1183:2015, Fire Safety in the Design, Management and Use ofBuildings under the deliberation of he Technical Committee for Passive Fire Protection System and relevantworking groups.
Adherence and compliance with stipulated regulations such as UBBL (Uniform Building By-Laws) 1984 aswell as MS 1183:2015 will positively impact the public by improving the safety of buildings, living qualityand public confidence.
