MARCH 17, 2019 2ND SUNDAY OF LENT

St. Kateri

St. Kateri

CATHOLIC CHURCH

16101 Rotunda Dr.

Dearborn, MI

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner

We are well into the season of Lent and hopefully taking advantage of

these days to focus a little on ourselves. Focusing on ourselves isn’t being selfish

but a very sensible way of trying to see ourselves as God and others see us. An

honest Lent looks at those negative elements in our personality that can dis-

courage and perhaps even scandalize others. Our language, our gestures, our

ways of interacting with people throughout the day might be something we may

want to look at for improvement.

On the other hand, Lent is also a time to see those very good qualities,

virtues and kind deeds that we can easily take for grated. Firs of all let’s have

the humility to give thanks to God for our virtues and all those good gifts inher-

ited from our parents and grandparents that lead us to do good for others. Sim-

ple acts of kindness are the most transparent presence of God’s grace in our

lives. Don’t complicate Lent, keep it simple, real and appropriate for your state

in life. Do what you can and thank the Lord that you are able to do it!

One simple act of charity recommended for this Lent is to contact one or

more of the folks on our infirm list published weekly in our bulletin. A short

note, a brief phone call or a kind visit to anyone of them might just be the thing

that they need this Lent. Maybe you’re just the person to do it!

Next Sunday, March 24th at Noon we will be hosting another Fireside

Chat in Resurrection Hall—our gathering space. The presentation will highlight

the life of San Salvador Archbishop Oscar Romero martyred on March 24, 1980,

while offering Mass in the hospital Chapel of Divine Providence. The story of

his life and his ultimate canonization by Pope Francis took place on October 14,

2018. The presentation is open to the public at no cost.

Have a good Lent.

FAITH FORMATION by Grace Lakatos

Lent… what to give up? How about changing it up this year and think

about what to take up? Think of taking up the pleasures of God’s love and

presence, after all God is what Lent is all about! Start simple with enjoying

His wonders in the outdoors. Watch the snow fall or the shape of the clouds

float by or even a short walk in the crisp winter air. The beauty of the out-

doors is an immediate way to experience the presence of God. Next spend

some time with others, especially those in need of compassion and generosi-

ty. What better way to encounter God than in the lonely widow next door,

the overwhelmed new parents, or the retired colleague still trying to figure

out what to do? Pray for little things, not just concerns of the world or what

you think God wants for you. In our house I thank God on a pretty regular

basis for the person who invented Kleenex, especially during cold and flu

season and peak allergy season. Got worries? Turn them into prayers. It’s a

win-win situation...give up worry for Lent, take on prayer for Lent. Remem-

ber God’s plan, God’s time. Lastly, seek the answers. Pick a time, pick a

place and seek the answer in God’s Word, the Bible—-you will be given the

gifts of time, peace and comfort.

JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS

Just a reminder that the Gift Shop will be open on Fridays during Lent

between 12:30 PM and 7 PM. This gives a chance for all who are unable to vis-

it us during the weekends. It’s also a chance to participate in the Stations of

the Cross and Adoration on Fridays. Deepen your Lenten experience by partic-

ipating in special Lenten Services such as these or doing some extra spiritual

reading or prayers. The shop carries many books and sacramentals that can be

of benefit. Tell your family and friends.

SPECIAL INVITATION TO CELEBRATE ST. OSCAR ROMERO’S LIFE

AND CANONIZATION MARCH 24

Stated in Father’s article, we will be commemorating St. Oscar Romero

of El Salvador beginning with a movie at noon. The film is very well done and

traces the transformation of Archbishop Romero’s life and spirituality in the

midst of political conflict and violence. Following the movie, there will be re-

freshments (did anyone say, “papusas”?) and music provided by Julie Beutel,

Bob O’Brien and Fr. Bob Scullin. Therese Terns will give a presentation on her

experience in El Salvador during the canonization celebration last year. The

afternoon will end with a talk by Janet Ray. Donations for the event will bene-

fit Clean Water for the World. Pass the word to your family and friends about

this special event. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon in March.

Catholics 18 years or older who have not yet celebrated the Sacrament of Con-

celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. Classes begin on Thursday, May

2nd from 7-9 PM. The cost is $10 per candidate. Please call the parish office

for more information.
