John Montague ['mɔntəgjuː], Earl of Sandwich, was an English nobleman. He lived in the 18th century. He loved playing cards for money. A game of cards sometimes lasted for hours and hours and Montague didn’t like stopping for lunch or dinner.

One day he had an idea. He asked his servant to prepare a piece of meat between two slices of bread – now he could eat while playing cards. Others began to order "the same as Sandwich!" The original sandwich was, in fact, a piece of salt beef between two slices of toasted bread.
