INTRODUCTION OF PATRAS

-The third largest urban area of Greece, in northern Peloponnese-Is built in the foothills of Mount Panachaikon- Urban geography : division into upper and lower sections

Page 5: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

INTRODUCTION OF PATRAS

CLIMATEMediterranean; Mild, wet winters and hot, dry summersSpring and autumn : pleasant transitional seasons

EXAMPLES OF ARCHITECTURE First Building

Current Condition : GoodSuggestions for renovation : •Replacement of the openings (but keeping the same style)•Probably replace the roof •Put insulation for the thermal bridges•Repair the barriers•Put some shelters above the windows •Repaint the facade

Page 7: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

EXAMPLES OF ARCHITECTURE Second building

Current condition : Very badSuggestions for renovation : •Remove the damaged materiels of the walls•Put a new surface• Internal insulation•Replace all the openings (keeping the same style)•Build a new roof•Repair the barriers•Probably put solar pannels on the top of the building for energy saving

EXAMPLES OF ARCHITECTURE

Third building :

Current condition :Very badSuggestions for the renovation :•Repair mostly the side walls of the building•Repair the openings by putting double glazing on the same frame•Reconstruction of the roof•Possible internal insulation

BASIC IDEAS

Keep it simple Keep it cheap, efficient Renewable as much as possible Use original components

PROBLEMS

heating / cooling system Bad Insulation of the pipes Circulation pump in a bad shape Heat boiler is damaged and too expensive Lack of space for Fan Coils

SOLUTIONS

insulation1. Roof insulation Options:

Insulation to the whole ground; Insulation between the beams on the roof; Insulation around the ground and the room;

Page 19: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

Which materials are possible? Glass wool

Strawbale

Wood fibre

Page 20: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

SOLUTIONS

Reasons for the strawbale Easy to find Low Cost of straw: 3 €/m2

High performance: λ= 0.045 W/m*K High humidity resistance Very good fire resistance

Page 21: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

SOLUTIONS

Windows insulation options

Page 22: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

SOLUTIONS

Reasons for the secondary glazing Want to use original components -> no

change in exterior appearance High thermal insulation Very good U-value= 1,7 [W/m2*K] Cost per window: 150 €

Page 23: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

SOLUTIONS

Doors options Replace the door with a new one with the

same style Improve the original door with self-stick

foam to the frame of the doors Decision : second option because it’s

cheaper and easier to install

Page 24: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

SOLUTIONS

Basement Options Mineral wool Wood fiber

Reasons for the mineral wool: It’s cheap material Good insulation properties Thermal conductivity only 0,035-0.05 W/m2*K Resistance against mold Good noise insulation

Page 25: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

SOLUTIONS

Walls Thin material to preserve the original room

size Should be breathable and compatible with

the original wall material Avoid any cold bridging

Page 26: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

SOLUTIONS

Advantages of wood viber The thermal capacity is more higher than of

mineral wool Protect much better against summer heat It supports uniform interior climate It’s easy to install on the wall It’s ecological material It’s cheap

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS OF THE VILLA

System is very old and has been built in small steps No clear plan for protection No documentation

System is running when it is not needed Lighting, computers, heating and cooling

systems

Page 35: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

CURRENT ELECTRICAL POWER USAGE About 12 computers approximately 500

W each Six lights for the hallways, one light per

office and lights in other rooms 12 – 40 W each

Heat pump, appliances and other electrical systems

All evaluated individually and total energy usage calculated annually ~ 36 000 kWh

Page 36: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

SOLUTIONS FOR FOUND ISSUES

The main goal is to cut down unneeded power usage Lower energy use

The total used electrical energy is , where P is the power of the system and t is the time it’s used P’ < P t’ < t

Villa needs better electrical appliances and smart control for the systems of the house

Page 37: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

THE LIGHTING

We chose LED lamps for the villa : Easy to install Efficiency Lifespan Low consumption

Page 38: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

THE LIGHTING

Approximately 12m² Original fixtures Fit LEDS 700 lumens per

lamp 7 watt per lamp

Approximately 16 m² One flat LED panel 1500-2400 lumens Possibly work lights Maximum : 20W per

office

Hallway Offices

Page 39: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

THE LIGHTING

One big office Approximately 20m² Two hanging

decorative LED fixtures : 2000 lumens (close

to center) 1000 lumens

(towards the corner) Possibly work lights

(maximum 20W)

Staircases Indirect LED lighting : on

the corners of the ceilingBathroom : Discrete bathroom LEDS 500 lumens 300 lumens (3)

Attic Two lamps 500 lumens (2)

Page 40: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

CONTROL

The idea for the control of the house is to only run systems when they are actually needed Heat/cool and light the offices only when

they are in use Install a main computer and necessary

sensors Plug in office hours and monitor office

use with possibly RFIDs Doable very cheaply!!

Page 41: Our rules of working are : Different knowledgeTogether on the same boat Have fun

CONCLUSION FOR THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

System is NOT SAFE! Protection might not work could cause a fire

Peak power can be cut down by installing better lighting Good for the working atmosphere Pretty cheap

Time of use can be cut down by better control of the relevant systems
