Dear Alka Munjal:

Peel District • School Board ~

5650 Hurontario Street Mississauga, ON, Canada L5R 1 C6 I 905.890.1010 1.800.668.1146 f 905.890.6747 www.peelschools.org

Thank you for delegating the Board on Monday, December 12, 2016, to express your concerns regarding the impact of the boundary change at SouthFields Village Public School, effective September, 2017.

Our records indicate that your family resides within the new approved boundary for SouthFields Village #2 Public School. We understand that your eldest daughter (Grade 8) and your twin daughters currently attend SouthFields Village Public School (one in the Grade 4 French Immersion Program; the second in the Grade 4 Regular Program). We acknowledge your key request that both of your twin daughters be permitted to remain at SouthFields Village Public School for their elementary school years.

Effective September 2017, your eldest daughter would be directed to Mayfield Secondary School for Grade 9. Your twin daughter currently in the French Immersion Program would have the option of attending Grade 5 at: (i) SouthFields Village Public School, French Immersion Program; (ii) SouthFields Village #2 Public School, Balanced Calendar/Regular Program (accommodated at Countryside Villages Public School until the new school is constructed); (iii) James Grieve Public School, Regular Program (nearby Mayfield Secondary School). Your second twin daughter currently in SouthFields Village Public School, Regular Program would have the option of attending: (i) SouthFields Village #2 Public School, Balanced Calendar/Regular Program or (ii) James Grieve Public School, Regular Program.

The options outlined above would permit your twin daughters to remain together for their elementary school years at either SouthFields Village #2 Public School, Balanced Calendar/ Regular Program or James Grieve Public School, Regular Program. Our records indicate there are nine (9) students currently enrolled in the French Immersion Program with siblings in the Regular Program being directed to either SouthFields Village #2 - Balanced Calendar or James Grieve Public School. This figure does not include new families that would move into the boundary area in future. We cannot offer a third option which would allow your second twin daughter enrolled in the Regular Program to remain at SouthFields Village Public School because we do not have space to accommodate your request along with the probability of many others.

If the Board were to grant your request, in the interests of fairness and equity, families in a similar situation in other schools would also have to be offered the same option (including the families of 154 French Immersion students at one of our other elementary schools having siblings attending a different elementary school for Regular Program).

The Board of Trustees appreciates the parental challenge involved with the transportation and attendance of children at three different schools. In your case, we are able to offer two Regular Program school alternatives which would permit your twin daughters to remain together for their elementary school years. Unfortunately, neither one of the elementary school alternatives presently offers a French Immersion Program.

Once again, thank you for your delegation.

Sincerely,

Janet McDougald Chair
