Pityrasis Versicolor is also know as Tinea Versicolor.

It is a skin rash caused by a yeast-like germ (Malassezia) that multiplies on the skin.

Small numbers of this germ live on the skin, but do no harm to the hostess.

What is Pityrasis Versicolor?

Pityriasis Versicolor affects only the upmost layer of the skin.

Fungal elements may also be seen within the outer cells of the skin, the stratum corneum.

The rashes spots are lighter and in some cases are darker. The color ranging from white, pink, salmon, red, tan, or brown.

Spots can become dry and scaly. Skin may begin to itch where the spots are. Spots become more noticeable the more

the host tans. As the yeast grows it starts to form patches

or rash. Spots disappear in cold temperature and

reappear in warm temperatures.

Hot, humid weather. Excessive sweating. Oily skin. A weakened immune system.

Medicine applied to the skin, anti-fungal shampoos, soaps, creams, and lotions. This can control the yeast from spreading.

Medicated cleansers, only used in warm months.

Anti fungal pills if yeast is thick and hard to control, in worst case senario.

The color of the rash may be a displeasing color.

There is also an emotional aspect to having the rash.

One may feel like a victim of this skin disorder, but is easily treated.

Pityriasis Versicolor is most commonly found on teens due to their oily skin.

The yeast usually grows in seborrhoeic areas (face, scalp, and chest).

There is an estimated amount of 2-8% of the United States population that has Pityriasis Versicolor.
