Identify the role of the faculty advisor In the fall of l998, a proposal was presented to the nursing faculty at Prairie State College. Elements: Community college nursing students who excel academically in the nursing program need to be recognized for their scholarly efforts. The organization should not be a club or an activity, but should include an element of service to the community as well as life-long learning. A faculty committee should be established to develop the requirements for membership, the academic standards that must be maintained and the type of recognition ceremony that should occur. The society must have advisors from the nursing faculty. The society must be recognized by the college as distinctly different from a club. In the fall of l999, the nursing department of Prairie State College established the Prairie State College Nursing Honorary Society. The first advisors were Sr. Ida Green, Kathy Malic and Gwen Dean. The constitution was created and the college officially recognized the society as a student organization. In February of 2000, Prairie State College held its first induction ceremony five charter members of the society. In 2005, Kathy Malic presented a poster about the PSC Honor Society to the N-OADN conference in Pittsburgh and received considerable interest. From 2000 to 2008 there were 89 students inducted into the Prairie State College Nursing Honor Society. At the 2009 winter meeting of I-OADN, Gwen Dean proposed that the local honor society adopted at Prairie State College become a template for a state wide society under the auspices of the Illinois Organization of Associate Degree Nursing. The response was favorable to explore how this could be accomplished and a task force was selected to visit PSC in the summer to learn more about the society. At the spring I-OADN meeting of 2010 a formal motion was made and carried to establish the I- OADN Nursing Honor Society. A committee was named to work out the details to establish the eligibility requirements, constitution, reporting procedures and the like. I was on this committee & have remained active with this initiative. The honor society would be named Alpha Delta Nu for associate degree nursing. In 2011, the I-OADN Nursing Honor Society steering committee presented a poster presentation at the N-OADN conference in Chicago. A great deal of interest from many states was expressed to establish the organization at the national level. At the 2011 November conference, the board of directors voted to establish Alpha Delta Nu as the national honor society for associate degree nursing students. As of November 11, 2015 there are 97 chapters in 28 states StateNumber of Chapters IL22 MD9 MS11 OH8 FL4 AR3 MO3 TN2 TX5 NJ2 NY2 AZ2 StateNumber of Chapters NC5 CO1 MI3 VT1 VA1 CT1 MN1 SC1 WV1 AK1 KY1 LA2 StateNumber of Chapters AL1 MS1 CA1 RI PA 1111 Your text here OADN website download application School must be a member of OADN Understanding and agreement of the by-laws College endorsement required Secure a faculty advisor Signatures of College President, Dean or Director of Nursing, and advisor(s) required on form Application and $50 fee to be sent to OADN Once your application is accepted, your chapter will be assigned its Greek letter/name Student eligibility to be determined after 2 nd semester Invite candidates to a meeting at beginning of 3 rd semester Honor Pin order form, cord, logo information & much more on https://www.oadn.org/https://www.oadn.org/ Annual report form on OADN web site also Due within 2 weeks of graduation Advisors Selection / Notification of Eligible Students Officers Projects Induction Acknowledgement Challenges Selection/Notification of Eligible Students Ensure Compliance w/Bylaws Initial Meeting/ Officer Selection Review on Candidate Meeting Minutes Keep Nursing Faculty informed of candidates meetings and plans Assist w/ Details of Project as needed Order Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society Pins Order Cords for Induction Ceremony or Graduation Schedule Induction for 4 th Semester Reserve Location for Induction Ceremony Order and Prepare Certificates for Induction Ceremony Order Refreshments if planned Arrange for Recognition of Inductees at Graduation (Announcement, Program) Complete an Annual Report within 2 weeks of graduation to OADN along with $50 annual dues.
