Yes, we had a hard time believing that this insane mountain formation was actually real, because we haven't fallen down the rabbit hole. But, believe it or not, this technicolor range actually exists.The mountains are part of the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in China. Layers of different colored sandstone and minerals were pressed together over 24 million years and then buckled up by tectonic plates, according to the Telegraph.Here's a photo showing some detail of the rich "layer cake" action going on.There's a similar formation in British Columbia called the Rainbow Range formed from a mixture of volcanic rock and various minerals.The formations were shaped into the flowing valleys after thousands of years of rain and wind, and the region has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2010.

我国甘肃张掖地区的丹霞地貌分布广阔，景象壮观，色彩艳丽，是中国丹霞地貌发育最大最好、地貌造型最丰富的地区之一。距张掖 40 公里处的张掖临泽倪家营南台子村彩色丘陵地貌景区是中国丹霞地貌景观中的精品。

前几天，美国《赫芬顿邮报》以图文形式报道了中国这一奇特的地质景观，赞叹当地彩虹山绚丽无比，匪夷所思，如梦如幻。原文如下：

These incredible landscapes look as if they have been painted in the sweeping pastel brush strokes of an impressionistic artwork.But in fact these remarkable pictures show the actual scenery of Danxia Landform at Nantaizi village of Nijiaying town, in Linzhe county of Zhangye, Gansu province of China.Formed of layers of reddish sandstone, the terrain has over time been eroded into a series of mountains surrounded by curvaceous cliffs and unusual rock formations.The scenic area is popular among tourists, who come to enjoy scenic walks and boat rides through the area, which is also home to a number of temples. The landform is a unique type of petrographic geomorphology which is found only in China which consists of red-colored sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age.World Heritage Committee decided to include China Danxia Landform in the World Heritage List at its 34th meeting being held in Brasilia, capital of Brazil, on August 1, 2010.

Analysis:A set of amazing pictures claim to show colorful rainbow mountains in China, which are supposedly formed naturally. Yes, it is a fact, these rainbow mountains are located in Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park, in Gansu Province of China.The Danxia scenic area in north-west China is a landform of reddish sandstone which has been eroded to create these unusual rock formations. The unusual colors of the rocks is the result of this red sandstone and mineral deposits being laid down over 24 million years. The process of development of these landforms is characterized by a particular rock sequence, tectonic background, climatic conditions and erosional processes. The Danxia landform hosts a set of weird and wonderful mountain shapes including natural pillars, towers, ravines, valleys and even waterfalls - that differ in colour, texture, shape, size and pattern. This Danxia region of China is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2010 and has become a popular tourist attraction for the town of Zhangye.

While the first picture that comes with the story can be slightly manipulated to make the colors pop a bit more than they would naturally, the other genuine pictures of this rainbow mountains are in fact wonderful and amazing.
