A Christmas Variety Concert

PROGRAM NOTES

The idea of glYmg the Florida State University Campus a Christmas present in the form of a variety concert came into being early this semester. The purpose was threefold. The band felt that there was a need for a light popular concert to serve as a sendoff for Christmas vacation. The concert provides a necessary focus for the fall activities of the Symphonic Band and an opportunity to hear the Marching Chiefs as a musical rather than a marching organization.

That this is a variety concert none can deny. Beginning with a light novelty march by Edwin Franko Goldman, we make a quick transition to Cailliet's capable transcription of Siegfried's Rhine Journey. Most concert goers will recognize the scene as Siegfried parts from Brunhilde and then goes forth to new heroic deeds. Dawn breaks into full day, Brun­hilde declares her love, and Siegfried, sounding his horn, rides off on the magic steed, Grane. We hesitate to go into further detail due to the recent visit of Anna Russell.

Percy Grainger's settings of Londonderry Air and Shepherd's Hey need no explanation to add to their enjoyment. Shepherd's Hey is music to a Morris dance discovered by the collector, Cecil Sharp.

Alfred Reed is a contemporary New York composer, currently Music Editor of Bourne Inc. Publishers . .

The Marching Chiefs are heard for the most part in the stadium and few people have heard the brilliant sound they produce in concert. The music they play features the best arrangements from three of this year's recent shows, a new Christmas medley and Christmas Carols. All the music was arranged by Charles Carter, arranger for the Marching Chiefs.
