Beyond Misinformation: What is Fake, and What is Real?The first of three programs that focus on fake news andmisinformation was held on February 13th at theAmerican Center with the virtual participation of ourCorners from Biratnagar, Dhangadhi, and Surkhet. Themobilization and manipulation of information havebeen a feature of history. This is an old practice that hasbeen fueled by new technology, making it moredifficult to discern, if not well trained. Our 1st programfocused on the contemporary issues facing Nepal andthe role that social media platforms have in the spreadof information. Not only were participants educatedand trained on how technology can easily manipulateand fabricate content, we also focused on how it can beamplified with support from foreign governments,populist politicians, dishonest corporate entities, orindividuals with a certain agenda. The two experts Mr.Laxman Datta Pant and Mr. Umesh Shrestha alsodiscussed how to mitigate or minimize the spread ofmisinformation. The program concluded with a livelydiscussion on journalism ethics and the ability tocritically analyze and identify reliable information.

American Center Held a Program on Dalit Civil RightsIn honor of Black History Month, the American Center onFeb. 11 held a program on the Dalit civil rights movementin Nepal. Entitled, “Dalit Rights Are Civil Rights: TheConstruction of a Civil Rights Issue & Activism TowardsJust Society”, the panel discussion drew on parallels andcontrasts with the American civil rights movement andefforts by Nepal’s Dalits to transform caste-baseddiscrimination into a civil and human rights issue. Opening the talk, Ambassador Berry reflected on theenduring legacy of civil rights movements in the US, andhow discrimination of all forms harms democraticprogress. The guest speakers, Mr. Bhakta Bishwakarmaand Sita Pariyar, spoke about important advances NGOs,international organizations, and the government havemade and what challenges and opportunities lie ahead. Over 40 participants attended the program and askedpointed questions and engaged in an insightful discussionabout the broader implications for Dalit activism inNepal.
