Be careful with needle and pins sharp edges Seam Ripper Used to take out a stitch To fix a mistake Let down a hem of a pant leg or sleeve How to use a seam ripper Use the seam ripper to cut the thread out of the fabric BE CAREFUL! You can cut a hole in your fabric! Tape measure Used to measure the human body and the layout of your pattern Hand Sewing Needles Used to sew through fabric and create stitching by hand Machine Needle Used in the sewing machine to sew through fabric Spool of thread Used to make a stitch Thread comes on a plastic or wooden spool which the thread is wrapped around Fabric Shears Special scissors used for cutting or trimming fabric Should not be used on paper Pinking Shears Used to cut a zig zag on fabric to reduce fraying of fabric Pin cushion and Pins Used for placing pins while sewing or for storing pins Pins are used to hold fabric together or in place Iron Used for flattening or pressing fabric to remove wrinkles Hem gauge Ruler that is used to measure distance when creating hems and waistbands Tailors Chalk/Pens/Pencils Used to make markings on fabric while sewing Thimble Protects the end of the finger when hand sewing Needle threader Helps with threading the thread into the eye of a hand sewing needle Tracing Wheel Used to trace markings onto fabric when using a pattern such as pleats and darts Rotary Cutter Used to cut through multiply layers of fabric Very Sharp blade and must be used with a ruler Safety Pin Used to attach fabric together or thread elastic through a waist band Button Hole Cutter Used to cut a slit in fabric after a button hole has been sewn Point Turner/Chop Sticks To push out points or corners of a garment or turn it right side out
