Research Overview:Computers continue to change the world of engineering and design; increasing the complexity of what we can design and make as well as enhancing our imaginations. In today’s competitive global market, advanced computing is a key to the creation, development and fabrication of new and innovative designs. Using an advanced computing foundation, our research develops computational synthesis methods capable of generating, in addition to analysing and optimising, performance-driven structural and mechanical systems. Overall, computational synthesis tools are targeted to expand the perceived boundary of design possibilities.

design and optimisation system• Integrated generative design tools• Parametric synthesis of mechanical systems• Multi-objective dynamic synthesis via machine

learning• Multi-objective MEMS synthesis & optimisation The software tool eifForm combines grammatical shape

generation, performance evaluation, artificial intelligence and simulated annealing optimization to search optima in a constrained space.

A prototype system, eifForm, has been developed to generate novel structural alternatives.

A digital canopy, thought to be the first real structure generated by a computer, and a cantilever truss supporting a noon mark sundial have been designed and fabricated.
