The ARC—Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC–OVR) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experi-

enced and dynamic person to the following position at Onderstepoort, Pretoria:

1. SPECIALIST RESEARCHER (EPIDEMIOLOGY, PARASITES AND VECTORS )

Key Performance Areas:

Provide leadership in management of the Entomology division;

• Referee scientific articles and project proposals for international journals and funding bodies;

• Willing to serve on the editorial committee of international journals;

• Maintain scientific recognition by NRF rating;

• Routine identification of insects of veterinary importance;

• Manage physical assets such as property, technology and equipment in division;

Participate in Programme and Institute-related administrative and other duties;

Ensures compliance with SHE/OHS policies and procedures.

Requirements:

A Doctoral degree in Entomology or Parasitology (or equivalent);

At least 7-10 years experience in a relevant scientific research environment, post Ph.D. ;

NRF rating: at least C level;

Relevant experiences in epidemiology and vector biology. Experience in molecular biology is desirable or the will to become proficient in this. A good knowledge of statistical methods and Geographical Information systems (GIS) will be an advantage;

Ability to execute and participate in multi-disciplinary research projects;

A good publication record will be essential. At least 20 publications in peer reviewd journals;

Evidence of sourcing or obtaining research funds will be an advantage;

Evidence of student training and supervision at PhD level;

Excellent language and communication skills (written and verbal);

Good administration and record keeping skills will an advantage;

Must be able to work independently, reliable, have good common sense, communication skills, diplomacy, patience and perseverance;

2. MSC STUDENT (2 YEARS’ CONTRACT)

Key Performance Areas:

Plan, execute and troubleshoot experimental design;

Perform general molecular biology techniques including; PCR, sequencing and nucleic acid ex-traction from bacteria and blood;

Perform immune assays using PBMC that will include flow cytometry an IFN-y ELISpot assays;

Requirements:

University BSc (Honours) degree in either microbiology genetics immunology or biochemistry;

The incumbent should have knowledge and experience in molecular biology and be familia with the following techniques; nucleic acid extraction, PCR techniques, DNA sequencing, analy-sis, and editing of sequences using specific software as well as flow cytometry and IFN-y ELISpot assays;

Knowledge/experience in transcriptome sequencing will an advantage;

Knowledge in immunology is important;

Presentation skills is important for representing the ARC at scientific conferences/meetings;

The incumbent should not be registered for a MSc degree;

Ability to work under pressure to ensure objectives are met and experimental work is complet-ed within two years;

The successful candidate will be required to register at the Uniiversity of Pretoria, Faculty of Veterinary Science.

3. ARTISAN ASSISTANT

Key Performance Areas:

Assist Artisans with maintenance of asset and infrastructure to extend their lifespan;

Replacement of windowpanes, installations of locks, using of handheld equipment, sanding and painting of lab furniture;

Preparation and painting of buildings infrastructure;

Fixing of buildings roots and general maintenance;

Adhoc work activities within the organization.

Requirements:

Matric & Drivers Licence will be added advantage;

5 years experience in in general maintenance of buildings, Laboratory furniture and infrastruc-ture, welding, etc.
