Sunday, February 28, the next Sunday of Preparaon (two weeks before Great Lent) is the Sunday of the Prodigal Son, which reminds us that not only must we repent and undergo a change of heart, but that we must also exercise an act of will, in that we must get up and actually set off on our journey. In our lives we can see a parallel; for how oſten do we repeat the cycle of the Prodigal Son’s willful departure from God’s house, a life of wantonness, misery at our fallen state, repentance, return to God the Father and divine forgiveness? On this Sunday at the Mans we also sing the beauful hymn of remembrance, “By the waters of Babylon . . .” which reminds us of the heavenly Zion from which we have been exiled. Sunday, March 6, the next Sunday of Preparaon, Meat Fare Sunday or Sunday of the Last Judgment, is the last day on which meat is permied to be consumed unl Holy Pascha. This is to remind us of the upcoming rigors of the Great Fast. The theme of this Sunday is the Last Judgment and the lot of those who turn from God, and those who return to Him. And Sunday, March 13, the last Sunday before the Great Lent, Cheese Fare Sunday or Forgiveness Sunday, is also the last day of preparaon. It is called Cheese Fare because on the next day we begin a total fast from all animal products, as well as from fish, wine and oil, connuing unl Holy Pascha. An important theme of this day is the Expulsion of Adam from Paradise, which reminds us of that from which we have fallen. Another theme is forgiveness, since we cannot begin our spiritual journey without granng forgiveness to those who have offended us and asking forgiveness of those whom we have offended. A special feature of this day is the very moving Forgiveness Vespers, at which we all ask and grant mutual forgiveness. Great Lent is a journey and we never begin a journey without planning and preparing for this journey. Think of Great Lent also as a race, again, we do not just run the race without first preparing for it. We must first prepare for the race by exercising our body to be able to run the race. Maybe we run part of the race a lile at a me. This period of preparaon in the Church is known as the Triodion Period. This me is symbolic of our life and spiritual struggles on the earth. The four Sundays of Preparaon are just that. They prepare us physically, mentally, and spiritually for our Lenten Journey, our journey to Pascha, our great race that we are now geng ready for. We prepare physically for our journey by gradually beginning our fast, we start eliminang certain foods from our diets lile by lile, not all at once. We also prepare mentally and spiritually for our journey. Now our prayers, the beauful hymns of the church, and the lessons from the Gospel readings are more reflecve, more penitenal in nature. They start us thinking more about our relaonship with God and with others around us. They start us thinking about our responsibility towards God and towards others around us. May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ grant you and your family a most spiritually inspiring period of preparaon as you ready yourselves for your Great Lenten Journey. The Four SundayS oF PreParaTion

Even though our Great Lenten journey does not begin untilmid-March this year, we do however begin to prepare forthis journey four weeks earlier. There are four Sundays ofPreparation for our Great Lenten journey.

Sunday, February 21, 2016, the first Sunday of Preparation(three weeks before the start of Great Lent) is the Sundayof the Publican and the Pharisee, in which we are exhortedto true repentance and are encouraged to follow the self-abasement of the Publican rather than the spiritual pride ofthe Pharisee. At the Matins service we sing for the first timethe beautiful Lenten hymn, “Open to me the gates ofrepentance . . .” reminding us of the open gateway throughwhich all must enter on the way to Pascha.

Sunday, February 28, the next Sunday of Preparation (twoweeks before Great Lent) is the Sunday of the Prodigal Son,which reminds us that not only must we repent andundergo a change of heart, but that we must also exercisean act of will, in that we must get up and actually set off onour journey. In our lives we can see a parallel; for how oftendo we repeat the cycle of the Prodigal Son’s willfuldeparture from God’s house, a life of wantonness, miseryat our fallen state, repentance, return to God the Father anddivine forgiveness? On this Sunday at the Matins we alsosing the beautiful hymn of remembrance, “By the waters ofBabylon . . .” which reminds us of the heavenly Zion fromwhich we have been exiled.

Sunday, March 6, the next Sunday of Preparation, Meat FareSunday or Sunday of the Last Judgment, is the last day onwhich meat is permitted to be consumed until Holy Pascha. This is to remind us of the upcoming rigors of the Great Fast. The theme of this Sunday is the Last Judgment and the lotof those who turn from God, and those who return to Him.

And Sunday, March 13, the last Sunday before the GreatLent, Cheese Fare Sunday or Forgiveness Sunday, is also thelast day of preparation. It is called Cheese Fare because onthe next day we begin a total fast from all animal products,as well as from fish, wine and oil, continuing until HolyPascha. An important theme of this day is the Expulsion of

Adam from Paradise, which reminds us of that from whichwe have fallen. Another theme is forgiveness, since wecannot begin our spiritual journey without grantingforgiveness to those who have offended us and askingforgiveness of those whom we have offended. A specialfeature of this day is the very moving Forgiveness Vespers,at which we all ask and grant mutual forgiveness.

Great Lent is a journey and we never begin a journeywithout planning and preparing for this journey. Think ofGreat Lent also as a race, again, we do not just run the racewithout first preparing for it. We must first prepare for therace by exercising our body to be able to run the race.Maybe we run part of the race a little at a time. This periodof preparation in the Church is known as the TriodionPeriod. This time is symbolic of our life and spiritualstruggles on the earth.

The four Sundays of Preparation are just that. They prepareus physically, mentally, and spiritually for our LentenJourney, our journey to Pascha, our great race that we arenow getting ready for. We prepare physically for ourjourney by gradually beginning our fast, we start eliminatingcertain foods from our diets little by little, not all at once.We also prepare mentally and spiritually for our journey. Now our prayers, the beautiful hymns of the church, andthe lessons from the Gospel readings are more reflective, more penitential in nature. They start us thinking moreabout our relationship with God and with others around us.They start us thinking about our responsibility towards Godand towards others around us.

May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ grant you and yourfamily a most spiritually inspiring period of preparation asyou ready yourselves for your Great Lenten Journey. Mayyou use this time of preparation to become closer to God,closer with members of your family, and closer withmembers of your Cathedral family.

Dear Fellow Parishioners, The winter and the bitter cold has finally arrived and whileyou may hear on the evening news that the low price of oilis somehow bad for the overall economy it is certainly help-ing your community with its heating bill. The buildings areof a time when no one worried about those issues, we actu-ally have single pane glass on all the classrooms so we throwon the heat and the heat and incoming cold just travel backand forth. A major project if we were to try and changethings but at least this year our bill is a lot less painful.

Father Michael has been deeply involved with the visits toour homes and to the hospitals as well as the activities ofour young people. It has been a pleasure to see his workethic and the love he has for all of us. I will say again pleaseavail yourself of whatever service he can provide to you ora member of your family. We are blessed to have him as ourpastor and need to use him to the fullest.

I wanted to touch base on three financial issues if I may:I am pleased to report that the community’s obligation tothe Metropolis camp has been completed closing that chap-ter of our recent history. I personally handed his Eminencethe check, he was very thankful and expressed his love forall of us while he looks forward to a spring visit to our Cathe-dral. It was also suggested we avail ourselves of the won-derful facility so close to home.

Secondly we had a successful kickoff to the 2016 Steward-ship drive as Fr. Mike blessed close to a hundred pledges onthe altar. I urge you to complete the application and beginthe support of our community as we share the burden witheach other. We have really made it an easy process, payhowever you chose, some are bringing in a weekly enve-lope, and others have an auto deduction every month, quar-terly, yearly whatever is comfortable works for St. George. We have also received a substantial amount of money,$494,006 to be exact from the estate of John Bolos for thepurpose of scholarships. We have been waiting and themoney is now ours. We will be forming a scholarship com-mittee to list the criteria for the annual awards. This is an-other benefit of belonging to St. George which I am sure youcan understand with the cost today of education. I will keepyou informed as this evolves and comes to fruition.

The youth activities have been running well, please read yourmonthly for updates and bring your children to participate. The young people need the same opportunity to begin their

PreSidenT’S MeSSage own lifelong journey of membership and growing love fortheir church so many of you reading this letter had in yourown youth. If we have a future they will be the ones makingit so support these early efforts to help them appreciate usat St. George and each other. The lifelong friendships manyof you have now came from the church and your participa-tion in events here at the church give our young people thatsame chance.

The Cadillac committee is finalizing its work as that event isfast approaching on first Saturday of February, 50 years ofwork, 50 years of hardworking community loving memberssupporting an event, 50 years of committees doing theirbest to create an atmosphere for an enjoyable evening, 50years of contributions back to St. George, an accomplish-ment to be proud of and I join with the rest of this year’scommittee in an effort to do it again. Pray we are againblessed with no snow; it goes on no matter what. I thank allthose who have loved this event and made it a reality anda part of St. George for 50 years, as we celebrate its GOLDENANNIVERSARY. May God bless all of you today and the manywho have passed into blessed memory who worked so hardfor so many years to join together as community to enjoyeach other company as we also support the church we alllove. Well done.

God bless you all; see you at Divine Liturgy,

Sunday SChoolDear Saint George Community,This month we celebrate Valentine’s Day. If you choose to cel-ebrate or not celebrate, one thing is certain. Jesus’s love for usand for our children. The Sunday School children are learningthat no matter what-Jesus loves us! We do not need a specificday on the calendar to show our love for Him. We express ourlove for Jesus everyday, in many ways. We pray, go to churchand like the Christian martyr Valentinus, we help and take careof others in time of need. I invite you and encourage our chil-dren to take their “Saint Valentine’s key” and “unlock” all oftheir love for Jesus! Details for the Sunday School Spring Phi-lanthropy will be coming soon! Stay tuned!

The day SainT SiMeonMeT The lord

The feast of our Lord celebrated in the Orthodox Church onFebruary 2 is known as the Presentation of Jesus Christ inthe Temple. The story of the Presentation is told in Luke2:22-29. Mary and Joseph were faithful Jews and observedtheir religious customs. An important custom was for thecouple to take their new-born child to the Temple forty daysafter birth to be dedicated to God. In addition, if the parentswere wealthy, they were to bring a lamb and a young pigeonor a turtle dove to be offered as a sacrifice at the Temple. Thecustom provided that if the parents were poor, they were tooffer two pigeons or two turtle doves for the sacrifice.

When Jesus was forty days old, Mary and Joseph took Himto the Temple in Jerusalem. They were not wealthy, so theytook two turtle doves with them to offer as a sacrifice at theTemple. As they arrived at the Temple, Mary and Josephwere met by a very old man named Simeon. He was a holyman and was noted as a very intelligent scholar. Simeonspent much time studying about the prophets of Israel andit was during his studies that he learned of the coming ofthe Messiah. The Jewish people were waiting for the Mes-siah to come and deliver Israel from their conquerors.

From that time on, Simeon spent his time praying for theMessiah to come. He spent many years in prayer and wastranslating a book of the Prophet Isaiah, and read the words:"Behold, a virgin shall conceive in the womb, and shall bringforth a Son." He thought that "virgin" was inaccurate, andhe wanted to correct the text to read "woman." At that mo-ment an angel appeared to him and held back his hand say-ing, "You shall see these words fulfilled. You shall not dieuntil you behold Christ the Lord born of a pure and spotlessVirgin." Finally, on the day that Mary and Joseph broughtthe Christ child to the Temple, while Simeon was praying,he heard the voice of God. God promised Simeon that hewould not die until he had seen the Messiah. Tradition sayshe died at the great age of 360.

When Simeon saw Jesus, being filled with joy, he took thebaby in his arms and blessed the Lord and begging to be re-leased from the bonds of the flesh, he said: “Lord, now letYour servant go in peace according to Your promise, becausemy eyes have seen Your salvation which You have preparedbefore the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation tothe Gentiles, and the glory to Your people Israel.”

.

As for the thrice-blessed Photios, the great and most re-splendent Father and teacher of the Church, the Confessorof the Faith and Equal to the Apostles, he lived during theyears of the emperors Michael (the son of Theophilos),Basil the Macedonian, and Leo his son. He was the son ofpious parents, Sergios and Irene, who suffered for the Faithunder the Iconoclast Emperor Theophilos; he was also anephew of Saint Tarasios, Patriarch of Constantinople. Hewas born in Constantinople, where he excelled in the fore-most imperial ministries, while ever practicing a virtuous andgodly life. An upright and honorable man of singular learningand erudition, he was raised to the apostolic, ecumenical, and patriarchal throne of Constantinople in the year 857.

The many struggles that this thrice-blessed one undertookfor the Orthodox Faith against the Manichaeans, the Icon-oclasts, and other heretics, and the attacks and assaultsthat he endured from Nicholas I, the haughty and ambi-tious Pope of Rome, and the great persecutions and dis-tresses he suffered, are beyond number. Contendingagainst the Latin error of the filioque, that is, the doctrinethat the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and theSon, he demonstrated clearly with his Mystagogy on theHoly Spirit how the filioque destroys the unity and equalityof the Trinity. He has left us many theological writings, pan-egyric homilies, and epistles, including one to Boris, theSovereign of Bulgaria, in which he set forth for him the his-tory and teachings of the Seven Ecumenical Councils. Havingtended the Church of Christ in holiness and in an evangelicalmanner, and with fervent zeal having rooted out all the taresof every alien teaching, he departed to the Lord in theMonastery of the Armenians on February 6, 891.
