MATCH REPORTS & RESULTS

SENIORS Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Surfers Paradise 5.4 10.5 14.6 19.11 (125) Labrador 3.2 6.3 6.6 7.8 (50) Another week, another upset. We should be used to it by now I guess. Surfers have promised this result for a couple of weeks now; they just needed to stick at it for the full four quarters. Today they did, and they produced their best win in a couple of years. The Demons were on from the opening bounce, and were relentless for the entire afternoon. With Labrador’s injury list currently sitting at 25 players, they smelt blood in the water. Conditions weren’t fantastic, the breeze was stiff and it drizzled throughout the day, but the Demons handled it the best. For the majority of the contest, they controlled midfield, defended well, and hit the scoreboard. Their pressure was through the roof. Labrador pressed hard in the third quarter, with entry after entry into their forward 50, but the Surfers Paradise defenders were steadfast… so steadfast they held the Tigers to a single goal in the second half. The Haberfield brothers were sensational for the red and blue in the midfield, they were the catalyst for their run. In fact, Cassidy had 17 touches in the first quarter alone; there is your match winner right there. For Labrador, Matt Daniel battled hard, as did Sam Folan, but they had their work cut out for them all day. Surfers showed today that when they play four quarters, they are as good as anyone. Coaches thoughts: Peter Young – Surfers Paradise “Today we started well, had four good quarters of footy, and I don’t think we had a passenger. Our midfield got on top, especially early. That’s the standard now, we expect that every week.” Labrador coach Perry Meka declined to comment. Surfers Paradise Goal Kickers: D. Green 4, S. Atkinson 4, H. Fraser 3, F. Pope 2, N. Corbett 2, J. Stevenson, N. Trevena, D. Mutu, B. Haberfield Best Players: C. Haberfield, B. Haberfield, S. Atkinson, H. Fraser, F. Pope, B. Woolford

OLD BOYS Get along and watch the Masters at work this Sunday 1st May at Broadbeach – 12:30pm vs Carrara.

UNDER 17’s Div. 1 SURFERS 13.4 82 defeated LABRADOR 8.7 55 Our boys were keen to bounce back after a disappointing start to the season, and this is exactly what happened. It’s a fairly simple match report this week…..we purely had 22 players go out and play for each other as a team. 22 players who tried their best to play their role for the team. 22 players who wanted to help their mates. 22 players who worked on their deficiencies from last week. 22 players who listened to the coaching instructions. Great team effort, with plenty of things to keep improving on. Well done to all. Go the Dees! Weekly game day Award winners – Myles Jewell, Josh Gore, Malik Kelada, Zanda Haw Coach – Grant Bons

MATCH REPORTS & RESULTS (CONT’D)

UNDER 17’s Div. 2 SURFERS 95 defeated BYRON BAY/BALLINA 35 On Sunday, we played Byron Bay/Ballina Magpies at home after watching an inspiring win by our seniors; our boys were ready to play. Unfortunately, the Magpies only arrived with 14 players; we had a lot of changes going on during the game to keep player numbers equal. All the boys showed great composure with the ball, showing that their team work and communication is starting to gel. We did come away with a big win and it was great to hear the boys sing the club song. Please remember boys the score board will take care of itself as we continue to perfect our game plan. To the boys who played a hard game against Labrador only the day before, thanks for backing up. We were lucky enough to have Jordan (U15’s) to come up and play with us and kick a couple of handy goals. Zac O’Connell chipped in with a well-deserved 8 goals and contributions coming from all players we kicked a few more. Cameron, Nic and Jackson Farrow showed us that we have 3 great ruckman that will contest against the best from any side. Zanda showed that his run with the ball is getting back on track after a long-term foot injury. Ollie and Lochie once again showed how versatile they are as big young men to get up and down the ground easily. Jye, Jayden and Josh O gave us some run from down back and on the wing. Luke, Connor, Myles and Will (Captain of the Day) showed us once again that they are 4 very honest hard footballers who follow the team rules. Jordan, Toby and Lofty, were once again very good around the ground as we know they are. They keep talking and sharing the ball as good team players do. Paul Spajic and Nic were controlling the centre for the first half and giving us plenty of forward play. At half time, Paul and Nic both went and helped out the Magpies, which was appreciated by me and the Magpies, as it gave some of our younger players match time. Your sportsmanship was very much appreciated guys. This leads me to Jackson “Jacko” Curtiss; he must have had sore hands and feet with the amount of ball he had by the end of our game. His efforts with the ball were just great to watch; hitting targets, taking some great marks up and down the ground, handballing, blocking and tackling, whilst continuing his talking and encouraging his team mates.

Big shout outs to Will and Zac O’Connell for reaching 150 games, and Nic Horne for reaching 50 games. This week’s awards: Zac O’Connell (for a lazy 8 goals). Jackson Farrow Toby Murfet Player of the Match: Jackson “Jacko” Curtiss. Thanks goes to Sandy and Moc O’Connell, Gary Curtiss, Dale Little and everyone that helped with game day roles. (Every heart beats true) Coaches – Glenn Pierce & Moc O’Connell

UNDER 15’s Div. 1 Report from Round 1 vs Coomera:- SURFERS 6.2 38 drew with COOMERA 5.8 38 Welcome to the 2016 Football season and what a way to start ! After a preseason based on skill development, the team was looking forward to showing their wares. This was a typical start to a season with both sides attacking the football and creating an enthralling contest. At half time we were able to realise some areas to improve. And improve we did. Our backline with Riley Spaninks and Keenen Faulkner were tenacious and lead a revival. The negative was injuries to our Captain Luke Peters, Vice-Captain Cam Hughes and Ruckman Jake McKinnon. All would take no further part in the game. Three Quarter time we had three goals on the board and needed everyone to stand up and make this last quarter our best quarter. With only one on the bench due to injury, we were up against it. Led tirelessly by Finn Taylor, the team began to run together and look for each other. Our ‘younger’ midfield of Max Pescud and Chris Griffin were dynamic all night and their last quarter was one to watch. Their efforts led to an exciting last quarter culminating in a draw to start the season. An exciting start to the year, and now with injuries and Southport next week, the character of the side will be prevalent throughout the season. Every heart beats true Coaches - Brett & Dane

MATCH REPORTS & RESULTS (CONT’D) Report from Round 2 vs Southport:- SURFERS 0.2 2 defeated by SOUTHPORT 9.8 62 We have had a testing start to the season with critical injuries to some key players and player’s unavailability. No excuses, we went into the Southport game believing that we could more than match it with them, as we had played them in a practice match and competed relatively well. With more than half the positions in the team still to be filled. Players were competing for a spot in our team. With a howling breeze at their back, we were able to hold Southport to four goals. We went into the second quarter, hoping to kick long and press. Unfortunately, that is where we stopped. Too many players didn’t compete and left too much work to too few. With more injuries to Mitch Jones, Keenan Faulkner and Finn McCombe, we had only kicked two points to ¾ time. In my 35 year association with Surfers Paradise Demons, this would have to be my worst day of football. We were soundly beaten all over the ground. The unfortunate thing is – not by a better team. A week is a long time in footy and we now regroup and look forward to the weekend ahead. Best Players: Chris Spajic, Cam Hughes, Chris Griffin & Paul Ryan Coaches – Brett & Dane

UNDER 13’s Div. 2 No report - Bye Round. Coaches - Stew Edrich & Brett Wren

UNDER 12’s Div. 1 SURFERS 5.3 33 defeated by SOUTHPORT 11.2 68 It may have been a disappointing result against Southport on the weekend but it provided a lot more positives than negatives.

The boys came out strong against the breeze and were able to hold Southport goalless. The attack on the ball and pressure on the opposition was fantastic and our own ball movement into our forward line was very good and we probably should have kicked a few goals ourselves. Unfortunately we started slowly in the second quarter and the intensity and pressure on the opposition dropped off which allowed Southport to kick a few easy goals. To the boys credit they lifted to produce the same intensity as the first quarter and levelled the scores by half time. In the second half Southport worked a little bit harder and our defensive pressure dropped away which resulted in Southport kicking away for a reasonably comfortable win. We had a lot of players who tried hard throughout the day but we needed more contributors as a lot was left to too few for most of the game. Whitey and Joel worked hard through the middle of the ground and Tom. C battled hard across half back. Like I said at the beginning, a lot more positives came out of the performance and to the team’s credit, after the game, they were able to identify what we need to do better and keep working on at training in order to be a better and more consistent team. We will continue to learn and work hard at training to keep improving as individuals but more importantly as a team. Coaches - Brad Moore & Simon Young

UNDER 11’s Blue SURFERS BLUE 2.12-24 drew with BROADBEACH BLUE 3.6 24 On Saturday we met Broadbeach at Broadbeach in windy conditions. We started well and were a lot more organised having worked on keeping our positions around the ground. We had plenty of the ball up forward but failed to capitalise, which kept Broadbeach in the game. At the final siren it was a draw, 3.6.24 to our 2.12 24. Our composure in front of goal will come, which will help us finish teams off that we are beating in general play. Stand-outs in the game were Liam Parker who received the Canteen Voucher award, and Liam Pyatt who received the McDonalds Award.

MATCH REPORTS & RESULTS (CONT’D)

UNDER 11’s Red SURFERS RED 10.11 71 defeated TWEED COOLANGATTA 2.3 15 On Sunday we kicked off the Anzac weekend home games with a great win against Coolangatta/Tweed Blues. Kicking with the wind in the first quarter, we kicked 4 goals while keeping the opposition goalless. Against the wind we linked up well through the middle and defended extremely well to go in at half time still 3-4 goals up. The second half was very pleasing with the boys kicking into gear and playing some good team football. The win was reward for a great team effort. Best on ground was Jake Selvey who received the Canteen Voucher Award, and the McDonalds award went to Connor Turner - a boy playing only his second game who involved himself well making some great tackles. Coach - Mark Snowball

UNDER 10’s Red It was a great all round effort by all the boys. The defensive work that has been practiced at training really helped towards what felt like a good win. Noah Taylor, Zac Smith and Taiga Nomura were among the best, together with Charlie Rogers, Owen Torney and Oscar Wood. Zavier Kerr showed great passion and earned himself an award for the week. Nathan Selvey stood up as captain for the game and led by example. Great job team! Coach - Darren Taylor and Paul Marshall

UNDER 10’s Blue The strong focus on defensive pressure flowed through to the second game. Hudson Lukin captained the team admirably with great communication and effort. Oscar Jordine was at his rampaging best to collect Best on Ground and was backed up by everyone else on the ground. Kobi Nightingale was in every play and received the encouragement award.

An all-round great effort boys. “Every heart beats true” Coach - Paul Marshall and Darren Taylor
