Your motorcycle and this owner'smanual have been designed bypeople like you who enjoy motor-cycling . People become motorcy-clists for many reasons . For start-ers, street riding is fun and invigo-rating. But no matter why you be-came a motorcyclist, or how expe-rienced you are, you will eventuallyface some challenging situations .

In preparing for these challenges,you will be fine-tuning your coordi-nation, concentration, and attitude .Learning the skills and strategiesassociated with motorcycling is thebasis for safely participating in thissport. Many motorcyclists find thatas they become better riders, theyalso get more enjoyment from thefreedom unique to motorcycling .

Please remember :

Most accidents can be avoided .The most common type of motor-cycle accident in the U.S. occurswhen a car traveling towards amotorcycle turns left in front of themotorcycle . Is that because otherdrivers are out to get motorcyclists?No. Other drivers simply don't al-ways notice motorcyclists .

Ride defensively. Wise motorcy-clists use a strategy of assumingthey are invisible to other drivers,even in broad daylight . Pay carefulattention to other motorists, espe-cially at intersections, because theymay not be paying attention to you .Select a lane position that gives youthe best view of others, and othermotorists the best view of you .Wear bright, reflective clothing . Putreflective strips on your helmet .

If you don't have a helmet, buya helmet and wear it EVERYTIME YOU RIDE .Most accidents occur within a fewmiles of home, and almost half oc-cur at speeds of less than 30 mph .So even if you're just going on aquick errand, be prepared strap onyour helmet before you take off .

Helmets do not reduce essentialvision or hearing . Generally, hel-mets do not cause or intensify in-jury if you crash . Helmets simplyhelp your skull protect your intelli-gence, your memory, your person-ality, and your life .

Your eyesight is equally valuable .Wearing suitable eye protectioncan help keep your vision unblurredby the wind and save your eyesfrom airborne hazards like bugs,dirt, or pebbles kicked up by tires .

If a collision is imminent, DOSOMETHING .Many riders fear locking up theirbrakes or haven't learned to swerveto avoid an accident . Many inexpe-rienced riders (and too many sea-soned riders) use only their rearbrake in an emergency, resulting inunnecessary impacts in somecases and unnecessarily high im-pact speeds in other cases . Yourrear brake can only provide about30% of your motorcycle's potentialstopping power. The front and rearbrakes can and should be used to-gether to maximize braking effec-tiveness .

Experienced motorcyclists learn to"cover" the front brake lever bylightly resting a couple of fingersover the lever when riding in trafficand near intersections to give theirreaction time a head start .

Emergency stopping and swervingare techniques that you shouldpractice and master before you findyourself in an emergency situation .The best place to practice suchtechniques is in a controlled envi-ronment such as the MotorcycleSafety Foundation's (MSF) ridertraining courses . The MSF's Motor-cycle RiderCourses (fundamentaltechniques) and ExperiencedRiderCourses (advanced strate-gies) present hands-on instructionof the basic principles of motorcy-cling and a variety of accident-avoidance maneuvers . Even a sea-soned motorcyclist can improvedhis or her riding skills, and pick up

a few new skills, through thesecourses. Some insurance compa-nies even offer discounts to coursegraduates .

Special situations requirespecial care .Of course, there are some timeswhen full-force braking is not thecorrect technique . When the roadsurface is wet, loose, or rough, youshould brake with care . Whenyou're leaned over in a corner,avoid braking . Straighten up beforebraking . Better yet, slow down be-fore entering the corner .

In these situations, the tractionavailable between your tires andthe road surface is limited .Overbraking when traction is lim-ited will cause your tires to skid,possibly resulting in loss of direc-tional control or causing you andyour motorcycle to fall over.

Know your limits .Always ride within the boundariesof your own skills. Knowing theselimits and staying within them willhelp you avoid accidents .

A major cause of accidents involv-ing only a motorcycle (and no cars)is going too fast through a turn .Before entering a turn, select anappropriately low cornering speed .

Even on straight roads, ride at aspeed that is appropriate for thetraffic, visibility and road conditions,your motorcycle, and your experi-ence .

Riding a motorcycle safely requiresthat your mental and physical skillsare fully part of the experience .Youshould not attempt to operate amotor vehicle, especially one withtwo wheels, if you are tired or un-der the influence of alcohol or otherdrugs. Alcohol, illegal drugs, andeven some prescription and over-the-counter drugs can causedrowsiness, loss of coordination,loss of balance, and especially theloss of good judgment . If you aretired or under the influence of al-cohol or other drugs, PLEASE DONOT RIDE your motorcycle .

Be extra safety-conscious onbad weather days.I ildlng on bad weather days, espe-cially wet ones, requires extra cau-tion. Braking distances increase ona rainy day. Stay off the paintedsurface marks, manhole covers,and greasy-appearing areas, asthey can be especially slippery. Useextra caution at railway crossingsand on metal gratings and bridges .When it starts to rain, any oil orgrease on the road rises to the sur-face of the water . Pull over and waita few minutes until this oil film iswashed away before riding . When-ever in doubt about road conditions,slow down!

Practice away from traffic .Your riding skill and your mechani-cal knowledge form the foundationfor safe riding practices . We sug-gest that you practice riding yourmotorcycle in a non-traffic situationuntil you are thoroughly familiarwith your machine and its controls .Again, consider taking one of theMSF's RiderCourses . Even expertswill be pleased with the caliber ofthe information presented in thesecourses . As the MSF says : "Themore you know, the better it getsl"

Inspection before riding .Review the instructions in the "IN-SPECTION BEFORE RIDING"section of this manual . Perform anentire pre-ride Inspection beforeyou head out on the road .

Spending a few minutes preparingyour machine for a ride can helpprevent accidents due to mechani-cal failure or costly, inconvenientbreakdowns far from home .

Accessories and Loading .The accessories you use with yourmotorcycle and the manner inwhich you load your gear onto thebike might create hazards . Aerody-namics, handling, balance, andcornering clearance can suffer, andthe suspension and tires can beoverloaded . Read the "ACCES-SORY USE AND MOTORCYCLELOADING" section .

Carrying a Passenger.Carrying a passenger, when donecorrectly, is a great way to sharethe joy of motorcycling . You willhave to alter your riding style some-what since the extra weight of apassenger will affect handling andbraking. You may also need to ad-just tire pressures and suspension ;please refer to the Tire Pressureand Loading section and the Sus-pension section for more details .

A passenger needs the same pro-tection that you do, including a hel-met and proper clothing. The pas-senger should not wear long shoelaces or loose pants that could getcaught In the wheel or the chain .Passengers must be tall enoughthat their feet reach the footrests .

Motorcycle SafetyFoundation's "Riding Tips andPractice Guide" Handbook(for owners in USA).This special handbook, suppliedwith your owner's manual, containsa variety of safety tips, helpful hints,and practice exercises . Thismanual can increase your ridingenjoyment and safety. You shouldread it thoroughly.

Be street smart .Always heed speed limits, locallaws, and the basic rules of theroad . Set a good example for oth-ers by demonstrating a courteousattitude and a responsible ridingstyle .

Conclusion .Traffic, road and weather conditionsvary. Other motorists' actions areunpredictable . Your motorcycle'scondition can change. These fac-tors can best be dealt with by giv-ing every ride your full attention .

Circumstances beyond your con-trol could lead to an accident . Youneed to prepare for the unexpectedby wearing a helmet and other pro-tective gear, and learning emer-gency braking and swerving tech-niques to minimize the damage toyou and your machine .

FUEL, ENGINE OILAND COOLANTRECOMMENDATION

FUELYour motorcycle requires regularunleaded gasoline with a minimumpump octane rating of 87 ((R+M)/2method). In some areas,the only fu-els that are available are oxygen-ated fuels . Oxygenated fuels whichmeet the minimum octane require-ment and the requirements de-scribed below may be used in yourmotorcycle without jeopardizing theNew Vehicle Limited Warranty orthe Emission Control System War-ranty.

NOTE: Oxygenated fuels are fuelswhich contain oxygen-carrying ad-ditives such as MTBE or alcohol .

Gasoline Containing MTBEUnleaded gasoline containingMTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether)may be used in your motorcycle ifthe MTBE content is not greaterthan 15%. This oxygenated fueldoes not contain alcohol .

Gasoline/Ethanol BlendsBlends of unleaded gasoline andethanol (grain alcohol), also knownas GASOHOL, may be used in yourvehicle if the ethanol content is notgreater than 10% .

Gasoline/Methanol BlendsFuels containing 5% or less metha-nol (wood alcohol) may be suitablefor use in your motorcycle if theycontain co-solvents and corrosioninhibitors .

DO NOT USE fuels containingmore than 5% methanol under anycircumstances. Fuel system dam-age or motorcycle performanceproblems resulting from the use ofsuch fuels are not the responsibil-ity of Suzuki and may not be cov-ered under the New Vehicle Lim-ited Warranty or the Emission Con-trol System Warranty.

Fuel Pump LabelingIn some states, pumps that dis-pense oxygenated fuels are re-quired to be labeled for the type andpercentage of oxygenate, andwhether important additives arepresent. Such labels may provideenough information for you to de-termine if a particular blend of fuelmeets the requirements listedabove. In other states, pumps maynot be clearly labeled as to the con-tent or type of oxygenate and ad-ditives . If you are not sure that thefuel you intend to use meets theserequirements, check with the ser-vice station operator or the fuelsuppliers .

NOTE:•

To help clean the air, Suzukirecommends that you use theoxygenated fuels .

Be sure that any oxygenatedfuel you use has octane ratingsof at least 87 pump octane((R+M)/2 method) .

If you are not satisfied with thedriveablity or fuel economy ofyour motorcycle when you areusing an oxygenated fuel, youshould switch back to regularunleaded gasoline.

If engine pinging is experienced,substitute another brand asthere are differences betweenbrands.

A CAUTIONSpilled gasoline containing al-cohol can harm your motor-cycle. Alcohol can damagepainted surfaces .

Be careful not to spill any fluidwhen filling the fuel tank. Wipespilled gasoline up immediately .

ENGINE OIL

ASuzuki recommends the use ofSUZUKI PERFORMANCE 4 MO-TOR OIL or an oil which is ratedSF or SG under the API (AmericanPetroleum Institute) classificationsystem. The viscosity rating shouldbe SAE 1 OW-40. If an SAE1 OW-40oil is not available, select an alter-native according to the chart be-low.

ENGINE COOLANT SOLUTIONUse engine coolant that is compat-ible with an aluminum radiator,mixed with distilled water at a 50 :50mixture ratio for engine coolantsolution. An engine coolant mixtureother than 50 :50 can affect coolingefficiency or rust inhibiting perfor-mance .

Engine CoolantEngine coolant should be used atall times in your motorcycle's radia-tor, even if the temperature in yourarea does not go down to the freez-ing point. Engine coolant acts as arust inhibitor and water pump lubri-cant as well as an antifreeze solu-tion .

WARNINGEngine coolant is harmful ifswallowed or if it comes in con-tact with your skin or eyes .

Keep engine coolant away fromchildren and pets . Call your doc-tor immediately if engine cool-ant is swallowed, and inducevomiting. Flush eyes or skin withwater if engine coolant gets ineyes or comes in contact withskin .

CAUTIONSpilled engine coolant can dam-age painted surfaces .

Do not spill any fluid when fill-ing the radiator. Wipe spilledengine coolant up immediately.

Water for MixingUse distilled water only . Water otherthan distilled water can corrode andclog the aluminum radiator .

Required amount of engine cool-ant/water solution capacity (total) :1600 ml (3 .4 US pt)

Two keys come with this motor-cycle. Keep the spare key in a safeplace. An identifying number isstamped on the plate . Use thisnumber when making a replace-ment key.

Please write down your key num-ber in the box provided for your fu-ture reference .

IGNITION SWITCH

The ignition switch has 4 positions .

"OFF" positionAll electrical circuits are off . Theengine will not start. The key canbe removed .

"ON" positionThe ignition circuit is completedand the engine can run . The head-light and taillight will automaticallyturn on. The key cannot be re-moved in this position .

NOTE: Start the engine promptyafter turning the key to the "ON"position, or the battery will losepower due to consumption by theheadlight and taillight .

"LOCK" positionAll electrical circuits are off . The keycan be removed and the steeringwill be locked . Turn the steering allthe way to the left and push downthe key and turn it to the "LOCK"position .

Clutch Lever OThe clutch lever is used for disen-gaging the drive to the rear wheelwhen starting the engine or shift-ing the transmission. Squeezingthe lever disengages the clutch .

Dimmer Switch (2"-D" positionThe headlight low beam and tail-light turn on .

"=D" positionThe headlight high beam and tail-light turn on. The high beam indi-cator light also turns on .

Turn Signal Switch 03Moving the switch to the "a" posi-tion will flash the left turn signals .Moving the switch to the "b" posi-tion will flash the right turn signals .The indicator light will also flashintermittently. To cancel turn signaloperation, push the switch in .

Choke Lever

Adjusting the front brake leverposition while riding can be haz-ardous. Removing a hand fromthe handlebars can reduce yourability to control the motorcycle .

Throttle GripEngine speed is controlled by theposition of the throttle grip . Turn itoward you to increase enginespeed. Turn it away from you tdecrease engine speed .

FUEL TANK CAP

To open the fuel tank cap, insertthe ignition key into the lock andturn it clockwise . With the key in-serted, lift up the cap . To close thecap, push the cap down firmly withthe key in the cap lock .

A WARNINGOverfilling the fuel tank cancause the fuel to overflow whenit expands due to heat from theengine or the sun . Spilled fuelcan catch on fire .

Never fill the fuel above the bot-tom of the filler neck.

GEARSHIFT LEVER

This motorcycle has a 6-speedtransmission which operates asshown. To shift properly, pull theclutch lever and close the throttleat the same time you operate thegearshift lever . Lift the gearshift le-ver to upshift and depress the le-ver to downshift . Neutral is locatedbetween low and 2nd gear . Whenneutral is desired, depress or lift thelever halfway between low and 2ndgear.

NOTE: When the transmission is inneutral the green indicator light onthe instrument panel will be lit. How-ever, even though the light is illu-minated, cautiously release theclutch lever slowly to determinewhether the transmission is posi-tively in neutral.

REAR BRAKE PEDAL

SEAT LOCK AND HELMETHOLDERS

Pressing the rear brake pedal wilapply the rear brake .The brake lighwill come on when the rear brakis operated .

Front SeatTo remove the front seat .

Remove the screws t0 (rightand left) and the fasteners OO(right and left) .

Raise the front end of the seat andslide it forward .

To reinstall the seat, slide the seathook into the seat hook retainer onthe frame and tighten the bolts se-curely.

Rear Seat

The seat lock is located at the bot-tom of the left frame cover. To re-move the rear seat, insert the igni-tion key into the lock and turn itclockwise .

Raise the front end of the seat andslide it forward .

A WARNING A WARNINGRiding with a helmet fastened tothe helmet holder can interferewith rider control .

Never carry a helmet fastened toa helmet holder. Fix the helmetsecurely atop the seat if youmust carry it .

To reinstall the seat, slide the seahook into the seat hook retaineand push down firmly until the seasnaps into the locked position .

Failure to install the seat prop-erly could allow the seat to moveand cause loss of rider control .

Latch the seat securely in itsproper position .

Helmet Holders

This motorcycle has helmet hold-ers under the rear seat . Hook yourhelmet on the helmet holder andlock the seat .

The side stand/ignition interlocksystem works as follows :•

REAR SUSPENSIONSpring Pre-load Adjustment

The rear suspension spring preload is adjustable. The adjustmencan be performed by changing thring position with the adjuster in thtool kit . Position 1 provides the softest spring pre-load and positionprovides the stiffest . The spring preload is set on position 2 at the factory. (4 position for SV650S)

BREAK-IN

The first 800 km (500 miles) is themost important in the life of yourmotorcycle. Proper operation dur-Ing this break-in period will helpassure maximum life and perfor-mance from your new motorcycle .The following guidelines explainproper break-in procedures .

Maximum Engine SpeedRecommendationThe table below shows the maxi-mum engine speed recommenda-tion during the break-in period .

Vary the Engine SpeedVary the engine speed during thebreak-in period. This allows theparts to "load" (aiding the matingprocess) and then "unload" (allow-ing the parts to cool) . Although it isessential to place some stress onthe engine components duringbreak-in, you must be careful notto load the engine too much .

Breaking in the New TiresNew tires need proper break-in toassure maximum performance, justas the engine does . Wear- in thetread surface by gradually increas-ing your cornering lean angles overthe first 160 km (100 miles) beforeattempting maximum performance .Avoid hard acceleration, hard cor-nering, and hard braking for the first160 km (100 miles) .

A WARNINGFailure to perform break-in ofthe tires could cause tire slipand loss of control .

Use extra care when riding onnew tires. Perform proper break-in of the tires as described inthis section and avoid hard ac-celeration, hard cornering, andhard braking for the first 160 km(100 miles) .

Allow the Engine Oil toCirculate before RidingAllow enough idling time after warmor cold engine start-up before rev-ving the engine or placing the trans-mission in gear. This allows time forthe lubricating oil to reach all criti-cal engine components .

STARTING OFF AND SHIFTING

A WARNINGRiding this motorcycle at exces-sive speed increases yourchances of losing control of themotorcycle .This may result in anaccident .

Always ride within the limits ofyour skills, your motorcycle, andthe riding conditions .

A WARNINGRemoving your hands from thehandlebars or feet from the foot-rests during operation can behazardous . If you remove evenone hand or foot from the mo-torcycle, you can reduce yourability to control the motorcycle .

Always keep both hands on thehandlebars and both feet on thefootrests of your motorcycleduring operation .

A WARNINGSudden side winds, which canoccur when being passed bylarger vehicles, at tunnel exits orin hilly areas, can upset yourcontrol .

Reduce your speed and be alertto side winds .

Make sure that the side stand is inthe fully up position . Pull the clutchlever in and pause momentarily .Engage first gear by depressing thegearshift lever downward . Turn thethrottle grip toward you and at thesame time release the clutch levergently and smoothly. As the clutchengages, the motorcycle will startmoving forward . To shift to the nexthigher gear, accelerate gently, thenclose the throttle and pull the clutchlever in simultaneously. Lift the gearshift lever upward to select the nextgear and release the clutch leveras you open the throttle again. Se-lect the gears in this manner untiltop gear is reached .

NOTE: This motorcycle has a sidestand/ignition interlock switch . Ifyou shift the transmission into gearwhen the side stand is down, theengine will stop running .

USING THE TRANSMISSIONThe transmission is provided tokeep the engine operating smoothlyin its normal operating speed range .The gear ratios have been carefullychosen to meet the characteristicsof the engine. The rider should al-ways select the most suitable gearfor the prevailing conditions . RIDING ON HILLS•

When climbing steep hills, themotorcycle may begin to slowdown and show lack of power .At this point you should shift toa lower gear so that the enginewill again be operating in itsnormal power range . Shift rap-idly to prevent the motorcyclefrom losing momentum .

When riding down a steep hill,the engine may be used forbraking by shifting to a lowergear .

Be careful, however, not to al-low the engine to overrev.

STOPPING AND PARKING1 . Turn the throttle grip away from

you to close the throttle com-pletely.

2 . Apply the front and rear brakesevenly and at the same time .

3 . Downshift through the gears asmotorcycle speed decreases .

4. Select neutral with the clutchlever squeezed towards the grip(disengaged position) just be-fore the motorcycle stops . Neu-tral position can be confirmedby observing the neutral indica-tor light .

A WARNINGInexperienced riders tend tounderutilize the front brake .Thiscan cause excessive stoppingdistance and lead to a collision .Using only the front or rearbrake can cause skidding andloss of control .

Apply both brakes evenly and atthe same time .

A WARNINGHard braking while turning maycause wheel skid and loss ofcontrol .

A WARNINGHard braking on wet, loose,rough, or other slippery sur-faces can cause wheel skid andloss of control .

Brake lightly and with care onslippery or irregular surfaces .

A WARNINGFollowing another vehicle tooclosely can lead to a collision .As vehicle speeds increase,stopping distance increasesprogressively.

Be sure you have a safe stop-ping distance between you andthe vehicle in front of you .

5. Park the motorcycle on a firm,flat surface where it will not fallover.

A WARNINGA hot muffler can burn you. Themuffler will be hot enough toburn you for some time afterstopping the engine .

Park the motorcycle where pe-destrians or children are notlikely to touch the muffler.

6. Turn the ignition switch to the"OFF" position .

7. Turn the handlebars all the wayto the left and lock the steeringfor security.

8. Remove the ignition key .

CARRYING A PASSENGERBefore you invite someone to be apassenger on your motorcycle, youneed to be thoroughly familiar withmotorcycle operation . Adjust tirepressures and suspension accord-ing to the Tire Pressure and Load-ing section and the Suspensionsection of this manual .

The passenger should always holdonto your waist or hips, or onto theseat strap or grab bar, as equipped .Ask your passenger not to makeany sudden movements. When youlean going around a corner, thepassenger should lean with you .The passenger should always keephis or her feet on the footrests, evenwhen you are stopped at a light .

To help prevent burn injuries, warnyour passenger not to contact themuffler when mounting or dis-mounting your motorcycle .

ACCESSORY USE ANDMOTORCYCLELOADINGThere are a great variety of acces-sories available to Suzuki owners .Suzuki can not have direct controlover the quality or suitability of ac-cessories you may wish to pur-chase. The addition of unsuitableaccessories can lead to unsafeoperating conditions. It is not pos-sible for Suzuki to test each acces-sory on the market or combinationsof all the available accessories ;however, your dealer can assist youin selecting quality accessories andinstalling them correctly. Use ex-treme caution when selecting andinstalling the accessories for yourSuzuki. We have developed somegeneral guidelines which will aidyou when deciding whether, andhow to equip your motorcycle .

A WARNINGImproper accessories or modi-fications can make your motor-cycle unsafe and can lead to anaccident.

Never modify the motorcyclewith improper or poorly installedaccessories. Follow all instruc-tions in this owner's manual re-garding accessories and modi-fications. Use genuine SUZUKIaccessories or equivalent de-signed and tested for your mo-torcycle. Consult your SUZUKIdealer if you have any ques-tions.

• Never exceed the GVW(Gross Vehicle Weight Ratingof this motorcycle. The GVWis the combined weight of thmachine, accessories, payloaand riders. When selecting youaccessories, keep in mind thweight of the riders as well athe weight of the accessoriesThe additional weight of the accessories may not only creatan unsafe riding condition bumay also affect the steerinease .

• Anytime that additional weighor aerodynamic affecting accessories are installed, they shoube mounted as low as possibleas close to the motorcycle anas near the center of gravity ais feasible .The mounting brackets and other attachment hardware should be carefullchecked to ensure that they provide for a rigid mount . Weamounts can allow the shifting othe weight and create a hazard-ous, unstable condition .

Inspect for proper ground clear-ance and bank angle . An im-properly mounted load couldcritically reduce these twosafety factors. Also determinethat the "load" does not interferewith the operation of the sus-pension, steering or other con-trol operations .

Accessories fitted to the handle-bars or the front fork area cancreate serious stability prob-lems . This extra weight willcause the motorcycle to be lessresponsive to your steering con-trol . The weight may also causeoscillations in the front end andlead to instability problems . Ac-cessories added to the handle-bars or front fork of the machineshould be as light as possibleand kept to a minimum .

Backrests, saddlebags, traveltrunks, etc ., may affect the sta-bility of the motorcycle due totheir aerodynamic effects . Themotorcycle may be affected bya lifting condition or by an insta-bility in cross winds or whenbeing passed by or passinglarge vehicles . Improperlymounted or poorly designedaccessories can result in anunsafe riding condition, there-fore caution should be usedwhen selecting and installing allaccessories .

Certain accessories displacethe rider from his or her normalriding position . This limits thefreedom of movement of therider and may limit control abil-ity.

Additional electrical accesso-ries may overload the existingelectrical system . Severe over-loads may damage the wiringharness or create a hazardoussituation due to the loss of elec-trical power during the operationof the motorcycle .

When carrying a load on the mo-torcycle, mount it as low as pos-sible and as close as possible tothe machine . An improperlymounted load can create a highcenter of gravity which is very haz-ardous and makes the motorcycledifficult to handle. The size of the"load" can also affect the aerody-namics of the motorcycle . Balancethe load between the left and rightsides of the motorcycle and fastenit securely.

ModificationModification of the motorcycle, orremoval of original equipment mayrender the vehicle unsafe or illegal .Obey all applicable equipmentregulations in your area .

The frame of this motorcycle ismade of an aluminum alloy. There-fore, never make any modificationssuch as drilling or welding to theframe as it weakens the frame sig-nificantly. This could result in anunsafe vehicle operating conditionand subsequent accident. Suzukiwill not be responsible in any wayfor personal injury or damage to themotorcycle caused by frame modi-fications .

Bolt-on-accessories that do notmodify the frame in any way maybe installed, provided that theGVWR is not exceeded . ForGVWR, refer to the ACCESSORYUSE AND MOTORCYCLE LOAD-ING section of the owner's manual .

A WARNINGModification to an aluminum al-loy frame, such as drilling orwelding, weakens the frame .This could result in an unsafeoperating condition and maylead to an accident .

Never make any modificationsto the frame.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULEIt is very important to inspect anmaintain your motorcycle regularly .Follow the guidelines in the chartThe intervals between periodic services in kilometers, miles anmonths are shown. At the end oeach interval, be sure to perforthe maintenance listed .

A WARNINGImproper maintenance or failureto perform recommended main-tenance increases the chance ofan accident or motorcycle dam-age .

Always follow the inspectionand maintenance recommenda-tions and schedules in thisowner's manual. Ask yourSUZUKI dealer or qualified me-chanic to do the maintenanceitems marked with an asterisk(*).You may perform the un-marked maintenance items byreferring to the instructions inthis section, if you have me-chanical experience. If you arenot sure how to do any of thejobs, have your SUZUKI dealeror qualified mechanic do them .

A WARNINGRunning the engine indoors orin a garage can be hazardous .Exhaust gas contains carbonmonoxide, a gas that is colorlessand odorless and can causedeath or severe injury.

Only run the engine outdoorswhere there is fresh air.

NOTE: The MAINTENANCECHART specifies the minimum re-quirements for maintenance . If youuse your motorcycle under severeconditions, perform maintenancemore often than shown in the chart.If you have any questions regard-ing maintenance intervals, consultyour SUZUKI dealer or qualifiedmechanic.

A CAUTIONUsing poor quality replacementparts can cause your motor-cycle to wear more quickly andmay shorten its useful life .

Use only genuine Suzuki re-placement parts or their equiva-lent .
