MESSAGE FROM THE MAESTRO

For the past few seasons each of our Let Us Break Bread Together concerts

has had a dual purpose. It celebrates the holiday season and has a secondary subject that I hope is of interest to our audience. This year, several Oakland institutions are observing the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther movement. We join them by adding a few songs from the era of the Panthers to our traditional holiday fare. We do this to salute Oakland’s rich traditions in the pursuit of social justice.

~ Michael Morgan, Music Director

INSIDEWHAT’S

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The holiday season is an important time that brings together many different

parts of our community. We hope and trust that the annual Let Us Break Bread Together concert has become a tradition among your friends and family. The end of a calendar year is a time when we can celebrate accomplishments over the last 12 months and look forward to our work together over the coming year.

Many of you have received in the mail or online our annual end-of-year appeal for funds. Your continued support allows us to bring this great music to the stage, to work with our numerous community partners to provide music education to our children and into our schools, and to provide programs to the community such as the Oakland Symphony Chorus. Thank you in advance for your generous consideration of this annual request. We are simply not able to provide all of our wonderful programs to the Oakland community without your continued financial support.

~ Steven Payne, Executive Director

The Oakland Symphony Chorus enriches our community through high quality musical

performances and educational workshops that raise appreciation and understanding of choral music, while providing opportunities for people who love to sing. Established in 1958, Oakland Symphony Chorus is one of the East Bay’s finest choirs, and a premier resource for continuing

education in the choral arts. In June 2015, the chorus travelled to Budapest, Györ, Vienna, and Prague for its first international tour. The Chorus performs regularly with its partners, Oakland Symphony and Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, as well as with a variety of other Bay Area orchestras.

ELLEN HOFFMAN

Pianist/composer Ellen Hoffman wrote her first orchestral arrangement, Let Us Break

Bread Together, in 1991 for orchestra, chorus and baritone soloist, collaborating with gospel singer Terrance Kelly. This became the theme for all the “Break Bread” concerts. She has written many arrangements for Michael Morgan & Oakland Symphony and has been part of every Break Bread concert since the first.

Today’s concert celebrates music from the 1960’s and 70’s, the era of the Black Panthers. Ellen is thrilled to write new arrangements for fabulous important songs with a social message written & performed by the great Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers, Sly & the Family Stone, and the Stylistics. Transforming these songs from a soloist and a band to a chorus and orchestra is a big challenge: How do you keep the groove going with so many singers and an orchestra? We’ll find out today! If you listen carefully, you may hear a hint of Aretha Franklin in Everyday People and a hint of Stevie Wonder in People Make the World Go Round, both of whom sang these songs adding their own flavor.

Ellen has performed, composed and arranged music for some of Oakland’s best and brightest musical stars, some of whom are onstage today. She is a vocal coach, piano teacher, and teaches at Stagebridge, a theatre and music school for seniors. She plays piano for English Country Dance, and works periodically with the legendary Rita Moreno. She is directing a new show, Entre’ Actes – Marvelous Music Hall Soloists – at the Great Dickens Fair in San Francisco, weekends in December. (As of today, there’s still one weekend left!).

Under the direction of Emmy winner Terrance Kelly, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir (OIGC) brings

together singers and instrumentalists who embody a community of diverse races, cultures, and faiths. They also share an uncontainable passion for music. Their mission is to inspire joy and unity among all people through black gospel and spiritual music. Judging by their audiences’ reactions—clapping, cheering, and singing along—it is apparent that they succeed in that mission.

The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir was born out of a gospel music workshop led by the exuberant Terrance Kelly at Living Jazz’s Jazz Camp West. It became an independent non-profit organization in 1991, and since then, the award-winning choir’s exquisite harmonies and stirring gospel repertoire have led to performances with a wide variety of

esteemed groups, such as the Duke Ellington Orchestra. OIGC also appears on Grammy-winning albums by Linda Ronstadt, MC Hammer, Tramaine Hawkins, and others.

OIGC, referred to by SFJAZZ as a “treasured Bay Area institution,” was named “Best Gospel Choir” in 2006 and the winner in the “Best Church Music” category in 2009 in the East Bay Express Reader’s Polls and was voted “Best Arts Organization” by Oakland Magazine readers in 2015. Terrance Kelly was recognized as “Best Choir Director” in the East Bay Express in 2015 and granted the Dr. Edwin Hawkins Excellence Award in 2013.

To be certain, the best way to grasp the choir’s greatness is to hear them in person. A current public performance calendar can be found at www.oigc.org.

Vocal Rush is a four-time national champion a cappella ensemble based out of Oakland School for the Arts

(OSA) and comprised of singers ages 16-18. Combining passion, talent and dedication, along with the vision of director/founder Lisa Forkish, Vocal Rush has become one of the most respected high school a cappella groups in the U.S. since their inception in March, 2011. Before joining the renowned School of Vocal Music faculty at OSA, led by chair/founder Cava Menzies, Forkish was music director for the University of Oregon’s award-winning a cappella group Divisi, featured in Mickey Rapkin’s book “Pitch Perfect,” later made into the box-office smash film. Vocal Rush has received numerous accolades, including national championship titles in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016, a first place win at the L.A.

A Cappella Festival, and perhaps most notably, a third place win on NBC’s hit a cappella competition show, “The Sing-Off.” Past members of Vocal Rush have performed for President Obama as well as OSA founder, California Governor Jerry Brown. The group has released two full-length albums and one EP (all available on iTunes) and has been nominated for six Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards, including Best High School Album. The ensemble has the soulful stage presence that reflects all that is unique to OSA and sets them apart in the a cappella scene. Vocal Rush brings to life the heart and soul of Oakland School for the Arts, putting their all into every performance. See these young singers in action at www.youtube.com/osavocalrush.

Linda Tillery first came to prominence as the lead singer in San Francisco group The Loading Zone from 1968

to 1969. She recorded her debut album for CBS Records, and worked as a studio musician through much of the 1970s, playing drums on albums by Santana, Mary Watkins, and Teresa Trull. She became a producer and staff artist at Olivia Records late in the decade, and released a second full-length album on the label in 1978.

Ms. Tillery’s association with Olivia Records led her into the genre of women’s music; she has collaborated with June Millington, Deirdre McCalla, Barbara Higbie, Holly Near, and Margie Adam, as well as with pop musicians like Kenny Loggins, Huey Lewis, and Bobby McFerrin.

She produced the music for the documentary film “A Question of Color,” and created and performed the music for the dance, Invisible Wings, with choreographer Joanna Haigood.

In the 1990s, she began exploring African music, forming the group Cultural Heritage Choir. She also plays with her own band Skin Tight, a jazz/blues outfit.

2016 marks the 10th time that the Mt. Eden High School Concert Choir has appeared on the annual Let

Us Break Bread concert. We consider it such an honor to be invited to be participants in this event every year.

The Mt. Eden High School Concert Choir is comprised of approximately 130 students from throughout the student body. The ensemble is open to any and all students regardless of musical background or experience. The concert choir is the musical “hub” of the Mt. Eden High School program.

The concert choir of Mt. Eden High School has consistently received awards and superior ratings at choral festivals and competitions throughout the state of California since 1993 hosted by prestigious organizations like the California Music Educators Association and the American Choral Directors Association. They have placed within the top four large choral ensembles every year since 1997 at the extremely prestigious “California Golden State Choral Competition” in the large choir division. The concert choir placed 1st in this competition in May of 2015, and then hosted the event in May of 2016.

The choir takes a tour every spring, usually throughout the state of California, but every three years tours in other areas of the United States. Their travels have taken them to Hawaii, Mexico, Florida, and New York City. They have also been featured on board Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Lines.

The choir is embarking on a southern California tour this coming spring, and in the spring of 2018 is planning to travel to Cuba.

Zog Nit Keyn Mol(Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Song) by Hirsh Glick, arranged by Kugelplex

Never say that you have reached the very end When leaden skies a bitter future may portendFor sure the hour for which we yearn will yet arrive And our marching steps will thunder: ‘we survive’

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Song was written in 1943 by a young poet/resistance fighter in the Vilna ghetto. The song has become an anthem for Holocaust survivors. Our version is inspired by Paul Robeson, who sang Uprising Song in the original Yiddish at his 1949 Moscow concert as a universal call for resistance, freedom and human rights.

Lean on MeBill Withers

Call on me Sister, when you need a hand. Oh, we all need somebody to lean on. I just might have a problem that you'll understand. Oh, we all need somebody to lean on.

There is a yellow one, that won't accept the black one, that won't accept the red one, that won't accept the white one. And different strokes for different folks! And so on, and so on, and scooby dooby dooby. Dooo sha sha! We got to live together! I am Everyday People!

MICHAEL MORGAN, MUSIC DIRECTOR & CONDUCTOROAKLAND SYMPHONY

Michael Morgan was born in Washington, DC, where he attended public schools and began

conducting at the age of 12. While a student at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, he spent a summer at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, studying with Gunther Schuller and Seiji Ozawa. He first worked with Leonard Bernstein during that same summer. His operatic debut was in 1982 at the Vienna State Opera, conducting Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio. In 1986, Sir Georg Solti chose him to become the Assistant Conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for seven years under both Solti and Daniel Barenboim. In 1986, he was invited by Leonard Bernstein to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic. As a guest conductor, he has appeared with most of America’s major orchestras, as well as the New York City Opera, St. Louis Opera Theater and Washington National Opera.

In addition to his duties with the Symphony since 1991, Maestro Morgan serves as Artistic Director of the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, Music Director at Bear Valley Music Festival, and Music Director of The Gateways Music Festival. He is Music Director Emeritus of the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera, and is on the boards of Oaktown Jazz Workshops, the Purple Silk Music Education Foundation, and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. He makes many appearances in the nation’s schools each year.

LYNNE MORROW, CHORUS DIRECTOROAKLAND SYMPHONY CHORUS

Lynne Morrow became Director of the Oakland Symphony Chorus in 2005. During her tenure,

the scope of the Chorus has expanded to include contemporary, international and neglected works along with traditional choral repertoire. She conducts the Chorus’ workshop performances of major works, hosts summer choral outreach “Sing-ins” and prepares the Chorus for work with Oakland Symphony as well as regional community and youth orchestras with which it collaborates, such as the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, Young People’s Symphony Orchestra, and California Symphony.

Lynne Morrow received a Grammy nomination for her work with the Pacific Mozart Ensemble (now Pacific Edge Voices), with whom she has also recorded two CDs of Dave Brubeck’s choral music. Since 2001, she has directed the Voice and Opera/Music Theatre Programs at Sonoma State University. Dr. Morrow presents workshops on African American Spirituals, including a workshop on a cruise to Alaska from San Francisco. Morrow has also given lectures on music in the Bay Area for organizations such as Oakland Symphony, Festival Opera, the regional San Francisco Opera Guild and Stern Grove Festival. Dr. Morrow strives for a visceral connection to music, presenting works from every corner of the musical arts in fresh ways, to reach the widest possible audiences.

BRYAN NIES, ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR OAKLAND SYMPHONY

Bryan Nies is the Assistant Conductor of Oakland Symphony, former Principal Conductor of Festival

Opera, and former Principal Conductor of Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, which he led on international tours, including to Australia and New Zealand during the orchestra’s 40th season.

With “superb musical direction,” Bryan conducted sold-out performances of Puccini’s Turandot, Loesser’s The Most Happy Fella, and Bizet’s Carmen at Festival Opera to rave reviews that stated, “Nies is undeniably a talent to watch.” In addition, he has been a cover conductor for the St. Louis Symphony, conducted performances with Opera Idaho, the Diablo Symphony, and the Oakland Chamber Ensemble. With Eugene Onegin, he made his Opera San Jose debut as Principal Conductor and continued with notable performances of: The Crucible, Werther, La Voix Humaine, Pagliacci, and the west coast premiere of Anna Karenina, becoming the second conductor to perform the work. Bryan continues to conduct innovative operas including successful performances of As One with West Edge Opera and Erling Wold's Fabrications. He regularly performs in recital and will record select vocal works and cycles of Reynaldo Hahn in the fall of 2016.

Pursuing an avid interest in all musical genres, Mr. Nies has served as Associate Music Director with American Musical Theater of San Jose and Theatreworks in Palo Alto. He was a faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is currently a lecturer at Stanford University.

OMID ZOUFONOUN, PRINCIPAL CONDUCTOROAKLAND SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Omid Zoufonoun is a conductor, guitarist, educator, and award-winning composer. His

concert commissions aim to blend his Persian musical heritage, learned under the guidance of his father Ostad Mahmoud Zoufonoun, with western practices of counterpoint, harmony, and orchestration. Recent commissions include a Cello Sonata for the duet Martha & Monica, a guitar octet for the Guitar Foundation of America, a choral setting of four Rumi poems for the Pacific Edge Voices, and a four-movement orchestral work for the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra. Omid conducted the premiere of this latter work at the Scottish Rite Temple, and a professional premiere followed by the Oakland Symphony under the direction of Maestro Michael Morgan. As a conductor, his recent recording of Bill Horvitz’s suite, A Long Walk, was featured as an Editor’s Pick in Downbeat magazine.

21OAKLAND SYMPHONY

Classical and symphonic music in Oakland have a rich history, dating back more than 80 years

to the original Oakland Symphony (1933-1986), and the subsequent formation of Oakland Symphony Chorus and Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra over 50 years ago. Oakland Symphony grew from this tradition of community commitment. Following the closure of the original Oakland Symphony in 1986, the Chorus and Youth Orchestra split into two independent organizations. In 2010, the Symphony, the Youth Orchestra, and the Chorus merged to establish one organization that combines the history and accomplishments of all three ensembles and is able to better serve our entire community. After 27 years under the name of Oakland East Bay Symphony, we are once again known as the Oakland Symphony.

Oakland Symphony is celebrated as one of the most distinct regional orchestras in the country, serving a diverse population through its unique convergence of artistic excellence, community service, and education programs. Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra was founded in 1963 and has been providing world-class orchestral training to young musicians for over 50 years. Oakland Symphony Chorus is launching its 58th season of serving the community through vocal training and performance opportunities for all who love to sing.

The Symphony, Youth Orchestra, and Chorus have the shared aim of making classical music accessible to all members of our community by presenting unique programs and attracting a wide-ranging, culturally diverse audience. We strive to bring together people who might otherwise never have met, to sit side-by-side and share a meaningful cultural experience. In the 26 years since Maestro Michael Morgan took on the artistic leadership of the Symphony, we have united the diverse Oakland and East Bay communities through music, and now reach over 60,000 people annually.

In addition to presenting unconventional yet approachable concerts, the Symphony invests heavily in education and outreach, working with schools and in the community to introduce people of all backgrounds to the joys of playing an instrument and experiencing classical performance. To date, our education programs, including the MUSE (Music for Excellence) program and Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, have helped over 100,000 young people discover a passion for music. The Youth Orchestra provides training to young musicians with a rigorous program of weekly rehearsals, extensive coaching with leading Bay Area professionals, and performance opportunities throughout the region and the world. Through our Access Scholarships, no young musician is ever excluded from the Youth Orchestra due to limited financial resources.

Along with our education programs, we foster the future of classical music through partnerships with contemporary musicians and composers. To ensure the future of symphonic music, the Symphony regularly commissions works from composers who have never composed for a full orchestra. New American works are frequently showcased in our programming and young artists are encouraged to create as well as perform. Recent commissions have included four new pieces in styles ranging from gospel to world music.

Throughout the years, the Symphony has fostered collaborations with local arts organizations, from children’s choruses to jazz ensembles. Oakland Symphony Chorus collaborates with a number of regional performing arts groups including Berkeley Symphony, California Symphony, and the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra, as well as regularly collaborating and performing with the Symphony and Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra. The Chorus serves as a premier resource for continuing education in the choral arts and holds open auditions throughout the year.
