MINISTERS

CHAMPIONS

What does it mean to be a minister or champion of justice? Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, in the case Berger v.

United States, described the role of the prosecutor as “the representative not of an ordinary party to a controversy, but of

a sovereignty whose obligation to govern impartially is as compelling as its obligation to govern at all; and whose interest,

therefore, in a criminal prosecution is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done. As such, he is in a peculiar

and very definite sense the servant of the law, the twofold aim of which is that guilt shall not escape or innocence suffer.”

How do we - in this day and age of transparency and accountability - justify the need for our roles as leaders of the justice

system and the powers that come with those roles? As attorneys, investigators, support staff, judges, law enforcement,

and other professionals who protect and serve the community every day in our great state of Louisiana, our powers are

not inherently our rights, but are entrusted to us by the community to whom we have committed our services.

By keeping this in mind, we can remember that we are not only leaders, but also servants. Our

powers are not entitlements, but priveleges; and we best serve our communities

by using those priveleges as fairly as possible.
