CUNEO,S TOURIST- CYCLING DISTRICT

Gianni VercellottiPresident of the Cuneo Tourism Bureau

CUNEO,S TOURIST- CYCLING DISTRICT

A land of extraordinary scenaryand panoramic variation but alsocultural, artistic, gastronomic andfolklore richness welcomes visitorswith great pride and expertise.Yes, we are happy that you can

come and “discover” us and that you can take back homewith you the memory of your rides, the surprises you haveseen and want to tell people about it.We are sure we will be a surprise for you because we live ina protected, sheltered, quiet and silent corner crowned withmountains, an inviting plain and sports-challenging valleys. But also because we have preserved woods and forests, fields and meadows, flowers and animals; because we havea never-ending variety of environments and therefore ofhabits too. This is reflected in the traditional strength of arich varied and healthy cuisine and in the quietness neces-sary to appreciate space and silence. While cycling you willchance upon marmots, chamois and eagles, on your climbs, enjoying the downhills, feeling good on the banks of theriver Po or in the middle of orchards and fields where youmay encounter more tractors than cars. All this with a newconcept of hospitality and range of sports, without logisticworries, that allows you to make the best out of visitingtowns, villages, hamlets and churches, palaces, castles. We are sure you will have a lot of tales to take back: comeback here with your family or your friends. You are alwayswelcome and expected.

... Cuneo’s tourist-cycling district«Cycling on these hills has been oneof the most beautiful experiences Ihave ever had. It is an intelligent andpleasant choice when it is done withCuneo’s “Granda” Bike Tour, the Bikehotels and the Time Trial Test Point».These words are frank, without frillsand direct, like the man who utteredthem. If a cyclist of the standing ofClaudio Chiappucci totally embracesthe Cuneo adventure, it is becausethe chosen itineraries have hit themark precisely thus giving a moreprofessional and complete meaningto the all enterprise. Chiappucci isthe unforgettable champion whoover a long-career earned the nick-name of “El Diablo”. He won theMilano-Sanremo race in 1991, twoWorld Cup races, he arrived second inthe Tour de France in 1990 and 1992,in the Giro d’Italia in 1992; he wonsilver medal at the World Cham-pionship in Agrigento in 1994 andobtained many top positions through-out the world history of two-wheels.He is the cyclist who embraced thewill to cycle first for enjoyment andthen for technical professional rea-

sons characterizing the choice of theroutes and stages, and who invitescycling fans to tour the “Granda”province. Claudio Chiappucci is no stranger tothe experience of tourist-cycling itiner-aries. He can rely on a solid experiencein the field of the most prestigiouslong-distance races and in travels totemperate countries with tourist-cyclists. It is not a coincidence becausethe Cuneo area is a territory suitablefor cyclist and tourist-cyclists alike.Cuneo’s tourist-cycling district wasdesigned so as to offer a positive andorganised idea for those who want toexperience the province by bike.«A bicycle – Chiappucci says – is notonly an ecological and adventurousmeans of experiencing nature, themountains and sea or just atown, but it is also a way of life.Behind a cyclist there is anexplorer, a naturalist, aperson searching for dif-ferent places smellingthe scents, discoveringnew tastes and colours». As anexpert in strong cycling passions,Chiappucci does not forget thesocial value that a bike can have.«Such a fascinating sport,”ElDiablo” adds, can only giverise to several forms of associ-ations at all levels, from therecreational groups lookingfor gastronomic discoverieswhile on the saddle to realathletes seeking new adven-tures with the wind on theirskin».

scents, we can go along secondaryroads and closed to traffic, we canexperience an immediate contactwith people going back to a morehuman rhythm of life. In short, wefeel better. It is not true it is so tiring;

it is only important just to choose anitinerary at one’s own level. It canalso be done with kids who will bevery happy to cycle free of danger orto be carried on one of their parents’saddles instead of getting boredinside a car. Try it and you won’t be disappointed».

OUR AREAThis brochure only refers to the plain and mountainpart indicated by the green line.

«Cuneo’s valleys and plains – Chiap-pucci says – are the craddle of eno-gastronomy but they have also beenstages of the Giro d’Italia for manyyears. This is a land of cyclists anddevotees of the two wheels for fun, health and passion. Besides identify-ing some itineraries for cyclists whocan rely on their good physical train-ing to tackle the high mountainclimbs or who love to viewith distance, thepurpose of this won-derful enterprise isto suggest a se-lection of roadsand trails forpleasant toursand for train-ing. A varietyoffered bythe richnessof landscapesand itinerariesimmersed innatural environ-ments, where thesports activities can becontinuously enriched by cul-tural visits and wine and food stop-offs». But in the end in Chiappucci’sopinion why does cycling appeal atall ages? El Diablo says: «The mainreason that makes us fall in love withthis means of transport is because wecan see things that usually passquickly behind our car windows. Thereduced speed allows us to spot allthose details that pass unobservedalong any state road at 80 km/h. Andthen we can hear sounds and smell

Time TrialPointThree simple words very familiar toanyone who practises any sport, espe-cially cycling. It is based on a projectwidly known among bike devoteesand is exciting and enjoyable. It is an electronic detection systemof the time taken to cover a specificroute that allows cyclists to competeagainst the clock on a climb or on apre-established route. At the end of his/her “performan-ce”, the cyclist can collect a certifi-cate which indicates his/her triptime. Due to its success among pub-lic and critics in certain areas of theProvince of Cuneo, now the scheme

is well established thanks to thesinergy obtained through

organizations, associa-tions and groups ofsports and tourism fans. Each climb is carefullyindicated with signs

purposely designed fortourism-cyclists.

Altitude difference, averagegradient and distance are now

available for those who cycle. Furthermore a series of hairpin turnsand spectacular landscapes dedicat-ed to the great climbing cyclists ofthe past.

All you have to do is collect the special magnetic card at thespecial distribution points, then insert it in the device at de-parture, and start climbing. The same operation must bedone again at the top. That’s it! The microchip on the cardrecords the times and when you give it back a special soft-ware prepares your certificate with all the data related toyour performance.A complete tourism-cyclist service, which includes the logis-tic support of the bike hotels. There are 11 climbs linked to a Time Trial Point, where theprofessional cyclists of the Giro d’italia battled it out. It is anideal challenge made even more appealing because of thememory of the great champions’ performances. Fauniera andAgnello Time Trial Point in the Grana valley and the Varaitavalley, already tested technically and operationally. In addi-tion there are the others installed in the Tanaro valley and inthe Monregalesi valleys, in the Gesso valley, in the Verme-nagna valley, in the Stura valley, in the Maira valley and inthe Po valley.

The “Giro d’Italia”mountains

We are under Monviso mountain, the King ofStone” in the Po Valley. The Giro d’Italia has beenhere twice, in 1991 and 1992, it has been won byMassimiliano Lelli and Marco Giovannetti respec-tively. Starting from Paesana (614 m abovemean sea level), the road climbs easily. Then thereis a series of hairpin bends until the junction forOncino. After passing the junction for Ostana, itclimbs upwards with a few demanding hairpinbends and a long uphill stretch before reachingCrissolo (1318 m). A short but rather steep sec-tion leads to the town centre where there is SanChiaffredo’s Shrine; then it goes through theother villages of Serre and Borgo. Now the mostdifficult stretch of the route has to be tackled upto an altitude of 1715 metres at Pian Meltzè, bet-ter known as Pian della Regina. After somelong and panoramic uphill stretches, we we arriveat Pian del Re at the Sourse of the river Po at analtitude of 2020 metres.

MONVISO-PIAN DEL RE

COLLE DISAMPEYRE

The Sampeyre Pass is located on the ridgethat separates the Varaita valley from the Mai-ra valley. The “Giro d’Italia” arrived at an alti-tude of 2284 m above m.s.l. going up the Mai-ra valley. Departure from Dronero (625 m).Afterwards there is an easy nearly 20 kmstretch leading up the valley touching SanDamiano Macra (745 m), Bedale (818 m),and Stroppo (910 m). After leaving the valleyroad on the right, you are immediately in thequick of the climb; the rather narrow roadclimbs up suspended over a deep ravine, cut-ting through walls of limestone with a series oftunnels in the rock. Gradients are sharp andcontinuous, and they can reach 15%. The val-ley widens and we arrive in Elva (1637 m),where the parish church preserves some fres-coes by Flemish artist Hans Clemer dating backto the 15th century. The road climbs further andthe last 4 km are especially demanding.

COLLE DELLAMADDALENA

The sharp hairpin bends heading for the ski re-sort of Prato Nevoso have twice been decisivein the “Giro”. In 1996 after breaking awayfrom everyone Pavel Tonkov won the stage andtook the pink jersey that he kept to the end ofthe “Giro”. In 2000 Stefano Garzelli was thefirst across the finish line thus moving into thetop positions and eventually winning in Milan. So it is a tricky uphill climb. We are in the Mon-regalese area, in the Maudagna valley: youstart from Frabosa Sottana, at an altitude of641 m. It is fairly easy to pedal the first sectionup to Miroglio; just outside the town the roadbecomes much harder as far as the Artesinacrossroad (it was here that Gianni Bugno triedto break from the peloton but did not manageit). In order to reach Prato Nevoso at an alti-tude of 1615 m you have to tackle 5 km ofhairpin bends; they can be cycled at a goodpace if you still have some energy in your legs.

The Maddalena Pass is part of the history ofcycling. It is the first of the great climbs of thelegendary 1949 Giro, from Cuneo to Pinerolo. It is an important connecting route betweenItaly and France, and also the point that dividesthe Cottian Alps from the Maritime Alps. Theclimb can be tackled starting either from Vi-nadio (904 m) or Pietraporzio (1246 m).After Pontebernardo, home of the cross-country skiing champion Stefania Belmondo, the road starts climbing in the Barricate gorge(today it goes through a tunnel). Then it reachesBersezio (1624 m) and Argentera (1684 m).This is where the hardest part starts: 6.5 kmwith an altitude difference of 312 m and anaverage gradient of 5%. Continuous widesharp hairpin bends take us up to the Puriacvalley, then the road flattens out near a smalllake. Another few hundreds metres and wearrive at the Pass with its 1996 m of altitude.

The “Giro” discovered Fauniera in 1999.Yourealize at once that it is one of those climbsthat make the difference: 14.4 km long, analtitude difference of 1687 m with an aver-age gradient of 9.5%. To reach the altitudeof 2511 m of the Fauniera Pass, the cyclistsstart out from the Grana valley, famous for itscheese named Castelmagno. The road startsclimbing in Pradleves (822 m) and enters anarrow canyon that runs along a stream. After the junction for Colletto (1105 m), theroute becomes a high mountain climb, it isnarrower and more demanding as far asChiotti. The gradient drops off near Chiap-pi, to climb once again until we reach SanMagno’s Shrine (1761 m). Keep climbingfor the remaining 6.7 km to the peak. Thereare really tough hairpin bends for the last 2km. The downhill ride leads to the Stura val-ley, and Demonte, 21 km away.

COLLE FAUNIERA

A legendary climb. The Agnello Pass has aplace in cycling lovers’ hearts. At an altitudeof 2748 m it is the third highest pass in Euro-pe (after Bonette and Stelvio): it is a trulystriking climb. We start off from Sampeyre(971 m) in the heart of the Varaita valley. Theroad begins climbing near Casteldelfino(1296 m) with a series of very demandinghairpin bends, and again before the lake ofPontechianale (1603 m). Then we arrive inChianale at 1815 m. The distance from Sam-peyre is 20 km, and another 10 km remain. They are the hardest, terrible for the differ-ence in altitude (993 m in just 10 km), thegradient (9.30% is the average, with somesections of 14% and the last one that reach-es 18%) and the altitude. A spectacular viewwelcomes us on the top: we can see Monvisomountain, the Provençal valleys of Cuneo andthe French Natural Park of Queyras.

As early as 1680 the first pilgrims startedarriving at Sant’Anna di Vinadio, the high-est Shrine in Europe. Today it is a famoussite of worship. We are in the Stura valley, departure fromVinadio at 904 m. The road starts climbing2 km later, in Pratolungo, and just beyondthe junction for the Lombarda Pass.Thereis immediately a series of steep hairpinbends in the middle of a wood until youenter Sant’Anna’s valley. The gradient dropsoff a bit, then the road starts to climb again(9%). There are two difficult uphill stretch-es, some bends, a lengthy flat sectionbefore reaching the altitude of 1847 m.Here the road divides up. To the left youarrive in France via the Lombarda Pass at2351 m. To the right after only 2 km youreach Sant’Anna’s Shrine at an altitudeof 2010 m.

oIt was the 86th “Giro d’Italia” that glorifiedthis super-stage which joins the EsischiePass (part of the route described in Fau-niera route above) and the SampeyrePass. The Maira valley joins the two passes:after climbing the 2236 metres of Esischiefrom Castelmagno, we go down towardsCanosio; near Ponte Marmora you join theMaira valley State Road and, after a fewhundreds metres downhill, you climb againthe impressive Elva valley. After crossingthe town centre, whose parish church con-tains the famous frescoes by Hans Clemer, the road reaches the Sampeyre Pass (2884m). From here it goes down into the middleof the Varaita valley (971 m) through thick, coniferous forests. An uphill arrival awaitsyou: from Sampeyre you head for Castel-delfino eventually arriving in Pontechia-nale (1797 m).

Granda bike tour

Grandabike tourThose who believe that one of themost authentic ways to get to knowthe Province of Cuneo is to explore itby bike, will be able to appreciate awide variety of possibilities. The per-spective from the saddle of a bike isso different. This sublime part of northern Italy isnot at all flat: this is the reason thereare such wonderful panoramas, andit is why we recommend suitable psy-cho-physical training. Two sessionsper week with some climbs will cer-tainly be enough to tackle the varietyof itineraries offered and to taste fullythis kind of experience. The sheme was designed to link thevarious “Bike Hotels” in the province(see p. 78). Due to its vastness andmorphology, the Province of Cuneoreally offers an extraordinary blend ofenvironments. From the mountainsto the gorgeous valleys, from theplain to the pleasant hills, thetourism-cyclists will be able to dis-cover, to visit and to appreciate themain historic, artistic and naturalsites in the tour area. The fairly acceptable distance in kilo-metres allows the cyclists to havetime to enjoy the area, which after allis the real reason behind this sportsand tourist scheme. In conclusion we simply wish you ahappy “tour” of the “Granda” by“bike”.

The Pesio valley marks the borderbetween the Monregalese and the Cu-neo’s area, and despite being a rathershort valley (15 km) it offers very interest-ing historic, artistic, environmental andnatural sites. It is often associated withthe “Regional Natural Park” which pro-tects 7000 hectares of splendid naturewith its wonderful forests, the verticalfaces of Mount Marguareis, waterfalls,Karst-plateaux and its very rich flora andfauna. Besides the park , the valley is alsofamous for its Certosa of Santa Maria(1173 A.D.), which is worth to visit espe-cially for the interesting ancient church, the cloister and the monks’ rooms. For mountain bike fans we suggest threeitineraries: two along the lower part ofthe valley between Chiusa Pesio, Villa-nova Mondovì and the Certosa and onein the very heart of the park from Piandelle Gorre to the Duca Pass.

Departure from Paesana with a totaldistance of 70 km to cover. We advise youto split it in two stages: Paesana, On-cino, Crissolo (35 km) and Crissolo,Ostana, Paesana (35 km). This is one of the most fancied routes, since it offers very good off-road trackson even ground and several cultural andartistic sites along the way. This is a ring route which connects thefour villages of the higher Po valley, that is to say Oncino, Crissolo, Ostanaand Paesana, under the spectacular sizeof Monviso mountain, the “King ofStone” of the Cozzian Alps. The first sec-tion towards Oncino has an altitude dif-ference of 886 m in about 25 km, afterwhich you will cycle at an altitudebetween the 1500 m of the Pian Munèand the 1220 m of Oncino.Proceed along secondary roads andtracks. From Oncino the direction istowards the tourist village of Crissolo. Then towards the ridge on the left of theriver Po, skirting several mountain chur-ches and some examples of local archi-tecture, you arrive in Ostana from where

you will be able to enjoy thepanoramic view of the massif ofMonviso. From here go to Pae-sana, crossing several alpine vil-lages.The lands of the Po, Brondaand Infernotto valleys arecharacterised by the unique pro-file of Monviso mountain, whichcan be seen from any corner ofthe Piedmont plain: the everpresent familiar pyramid on thehorizon.Along the route in the Povalley there are several itinerariesindicated as “Orizzonte Mon-viso” (Monviso Horizon). Followthem and you will discover typicalvillages and architecture, ancienttales and legends, while going tothe Source of the river Po.

Follow this pleasant itinerarywith interest, and you will be-come part of the history of thisland, and thinking of the hugework of nature and man, you willdiscover a new inner dimension.Along this route there are manysites of worship belonging to theancient local alpine communi-ties. You can rest for a few min-utes under the porch of a solitarychapel or in front of a roadsidestatue, or you can try and imag-ine the people of the ancient, populous villages gathering toask for Our Lady’s or theSaints’ protection.
