METVETS Autumn 2016 GENE VISIT T T hanks to Jack Noblitt and the Gene staff our members had another wonderful stay at Gene. This time there were nearly twenty venturesome members who traveled to Gene to see the changes, walk though the Preston museum to see the incredible relics from Met’s past, spend a bit of time on Copper Basin, tour the pump plant and simulator room, and of course, partake of the great food that is always available at Gene...especially the steak/chicken barbeque at the old watering hole. There was a bit of rain, but it wound up giving us a glorious double rainbow! Lawson Woody demonstrated a power switching program for us in the simulator room. Everyone was glad they had made the trip. HOLIDAY LUNCHEON D D on Grant has us returning to the San Dimas Golf Course as it’s the best deal out there for us! The board had asked him to check out other venues as we’ve been at San Dimas for some time and while the accommodations are just fine and the food is always good, maybe it was time for a change. In doing his checking, Don found that the prices just can’t be beat. The date’s been set for December 8 th , so be sure to mark your calendars . Hang on to the enclosed flier and fill it out as soon as possible. Return it to Don, with a check made out to MetVets, so that we’ll see you at the luncheon! GENE VISIT

TT hanks to Jack Noblitt and the Gene staff our members had another wonderful stay at Gene. This

time there were nearly twenty venturesome members who traveled to Gene to see the changes,

walk though the Preston museum to see the incredible relics from Met’s past, spend a bit of time on

Copper Basin, tour the pump plant and simulator room, and of course, partake of the great food that

is always available at Gene...especially the steak/chicken barbeque at the old watering hole. There

was a bit of rain, but it wound up giving us a glorious double rainbow! Lawson Woody demonstrated a

power switching program for us in the simulator room. Everyone was glad they had made the trip.

HOLIDAY LUNCHEON

DD on Grant has us returning to the San Dimas Golf Course as it’s the best deal out there

for us! The board had asked him to check out other venues as we’ve been at San Dimas for

some time and while the accommodations are just fine and the food is always good, maybe it was

time for a change. In doing his checking, Don found that the prices just can’t be beat.

The date’s been set for December 8th, so be sure to mark your calendars .

Hang on to the enclosed flier and fill it out as soon as possible. Return it to Don, with a

check made out to MetVets, so that we’ll see you at the luncheon!

FRIENDS WRITE

II recently heard from a couple

of our members who’ve moved

away and I thought I’d include a

few tidbits from their letters.

We’d love to hear from others of

you who can’t attend our func-

tions for whatever reasons.

from Dan Chevez:

Dan wrote that he’s been retired

since 1993 and some time ago

moved to Missouri to be near his

youngest, Claudine, and her fam-

ily. He told me that he and Marta

have been married nearly 59

years! They have 3 kids, 7 grand-

kids, and 8 great grandkids.

They’ve recently moved into a

one-story house as their older

two-story home was becoming

too much for them to manage

(how many of us have and will

have to deal with this kind of

move?).

from Paul Singer:

Paul said that for the first 15

years of his retirement, he and

wife Olivia went on many trips

and cruises to other countries,

enjoying observing the many cul-

tures they encountered.

Olivia is now also fully retired but

is working with Stanford and the

University of Taiwan on a joint

study regarding water treatment

(that’s fully retired?). Paul can’t

take these trips anymore be-

cause, at 86, he can’t walk very

far as his knees are bad and he

often uses a cane to get around.

Olivia still travels two or three

times a year.

Paul says he now spends his

time with his stepdaughter and

her two teenage granddaughters

and walking his border collie.

SANTA MARIA

REUNION

TT hought that you might need a

reminder that we’ll be head-

ing back to Santa Maria for our

2017 reunion.

Because it should be a bit cooler

in Santa Maria than we find in

Laughlin, we’ll be there for three

nights and four days in May. So

mark your calendars to ensure

you’ll be there from May 1-3.

WE SAY GOODBY

Ernie Kish passed

away on August 21st. He worked

in inspection and survey from

1965 to 1992.

Lou Scamolla passed away on

July 5th.

Thomas Chambers passed away

on August 28th. A former 27-year

veteran of the LA Police Depart-

ment, he joined Met in February

2006 and was a security special-

ist. He is survived by his wife,

one son, one daughter, three

step-daughters and two grand-

children.

Bahran Akhavan passed away on

September 17th. He joined MWD

in 1991 as an assistant engi-

neer, eventually being promoted

to senior engineer on the pipe-

line design team. He is remem-

bered as a “man of intelligence,

character and integrity.” He is

survived by wife, a daughter and

son, mother, four sisters, a broth-

er, and a new-born granddaugh-

ter.
