President's Column By Mimi Decker

As 1992 draws to a close there are many changes taking place in the GRTC. As of November 30, I have resigned as President of the GRTC. I have enjoyed the last three and one-half years as acting President and President of the Club. I would like to thank all of you and particularly the Club Board members who have supported me and our programs and events. At this time, no successor has been named. A search committee has been appointed and is open to any suggestions you might have. Please contact me, Jane laculli or Rick Guido with your thoughts.

Additionally, our longtime friend and editor, Ed Cloos is stepping down from his position. Over the last seven years it has been no secret that the GRTC newsletter is in reality the Ed and Carol Cloos newsletter. From the slick presentation of the cover to the smallest detail, Ed has done an outstanding job. He and Carol have spent countless hours gathering stories and photographs. We wish you both well In your semi-retirement and thank you kindly for your hard work and dedication on behalf of GRTC. We will miss you.

If you see Pete Dunfey wish Ilim well. He will be out of commission for about six weeks as the result of a fall at the R.T. Turkey Run.

I wish all of you a Happy Holiday Season and hope to see you out on the streets and tracks in 1993.

Lawson, Ford lead cross-country series Individual champions led their teams to victory By Ed Cloos

There was never any suspense when ~erry Lawson was at the starting line In the Upstate New York Cross-Country Series. He went to the lead early and won all seven races by huge margins .

The team competition was another matter as two of the five team titles weren't decided until the final Championship Day races Nov. 21 at Mendon Ponds Park. Lawson's Syracuse Track Club team was one of those winners, taking the elite division over High Noon AC of Ithaca, the leaders most of the way. High Noon was hurt by loss of No.1 runner Scott Jones who has coaching responsibilities at Cornell University and couldn 't make the final meet .

The individual women ls champion is Patti Ford of the Syracuse Chargers . She won three of the six races she entered and led the Chargers to the

open womenls championship. The other final-day team winner was

Team Xerox, led by Howie Reitz, which took the final two races to come out on top of a three-team race in the open menls division . The Cats AC team had the big 1-2 punch of Jim Bathgate and Carl Johnston but couldn 't ove rcome the depth of Xerox. The Oswego River Runners didn ' t make a series appearance until Race 3 , but they were a factor in each race after that and almost won the title. They ended up a close third.

The men ' s elite champion Syracuse Track Club team , in addition to Lawson, included Larry Woods of Glens Falls, 1992 Wineglass Marathon champ Jim Nicholson of Oswego, former Syracuse Al l-American Jim O'Connell, and former New York State high school 2-mil"e champ Jerry Scholder. Marty Froelick, who finished up second to

DOOMED TO DO - Tom Carr leads group of runners skirting mud at Mendon Park. Don Solarek, 50s champion, is at far left. Most in this group later took a wrong tum and were disqualified.

Cross-coun try Lawson in individual scoring, and Scott Jones led High Noon. Karl Staven was their third top scorer .

Patruno Electric, the third-PlJ ce elite team, is made up of forme r ! LeMoyne College runners plus Roger Hawks who was last year ' s individual champion .

The masters men title went to the Cats AC over Syracuse Track Club (wh ich is, of course, primari l y a cross- country club rather than a track club). Series director Pete Glavin noted that if Syracuse T. e. guru Jerry Smith had gotten the kind of suppo rt this year that he had in the past , this could have been the start of a great rivalry as each club includes some of the count ry's best maste r s runners. A l oaded team of Derck Frechette , Jim Boy l e , Tom Lamme , Mike Hasenauer, Greg Brooks and Tom Carr led the Cats to victory .

The senior women's division was a one-team race as the Lady Rats of Rochester ran unopposed. However, the talented team led by Laurie Cuomo, Karen Soehner, Denise Everitt , S~e Zygo and Jane O'Donnell would have done very wel l in the open division as well.

With Patti Ford and Mari l yn Brandt l eadi ng the way, th e Syracuse Charge r s dominated the open division. Cats AC and Syracuse Track Club were unable to ield complete teams for many races , allowing the Jennifer Jensen-l ed Team Sprite to finish second.

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION takes a back seat to teams in the series , but it was hotly contested. Rick Hoebek e of Trumansburg was almost as dominant among the masters as Laws on was overall . He won five of the six races he entered , ·losing only to national masters BK champion Cha rlie McMullen who dropped in for one race at Cobbs Hill .

The veteran men 's division saw the top three 50s men sepa r ated by just two points. Don Solarek of East

Cross-coun try Rochester won with 41. He was fOllowed by Charlie Kellogg of Honeoye Falls (40) and Bill Kehoe, owner of Willopus T-Shirts and a series sponsor, with 39.

The veterans division was the most affected by a final-race wrong turn that saw a whole group of runners accidently take a wrong turn and cut enough off the course to finish with the race leaders. That group included both Solarek and Dick Telarico, who were disqualified. Had they finished as they were running before the wr ong turn, Solarek would have been second to Kellogg in the race but padded his overall series lead. Telarico was headed for third and a much closer final finish to Kehoe. The final season placings weren't affected, however.

The masters division saw the third winner in three years among the women as Sue Zygo, representing the Lady Rats, finished ahead of Mary Beth Hasenauer and Kathy Brown of Cats. Zygo has 49 points to 44 for Hasenauer and 40 for Brown. All of the women mis s ed a numbe r of races.

AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS, the series attracted some of the top runners from allover New York State. Former collegiate All-Americans such as Jim O'Connell and Patti Wiegand ran . Jerry Lawson and Marty Froelick were both Olympic Marathon Trials qualifiers. Tammy Wilcox (McQuaid winner) wa s a member of the Canadian world crosscountry team.

Next year's schedule will reflect the regional interest that has been shown. Races are scheduled tentatively for Liverpool and Fayetteville-Manlius in the Syracuse area, Genesee Country Park in Batavia, Oatka Creek Park in Scottsville (Niagara TAC championship) as well as Rochester-area sites Cobbs Hill, Genesee Valley Park and Seneca Park. Championship Day next year will be at Canandaigua's Community College of the Finger Lakes.

WHY NOT YOO? Series director Peter Glavin, although encouraged by participation in the series, believes more people should give cross-country a try. "We started with about 80 runners per race in 1990 and now we have almost 150 every time. That',s very encouraging when you realize that 30 percent of these people are driving

~

more than an hour to get to the race," he obs'erved . "However, I think the numbers in Rochester shOUld be greater. It's disappointing when you think that people will spend $10 to

$15 to run a road race that goes down the street, turns around and comes back, then wait two hours for re s ults."

As he sees it, "They could run a cross-country race on some of the most scenic courses in the area , against some of the best competition , and all the while making themselves a better runner."

With the team competition , he pointed out, "there's a comraderie that isn't experienced in road racing . That's what makes cross-country special."

He said he feared that "if runners of this area don't take advantage of this, then the series may end up in paces where more people will take advantage of it."

Jel'l'Y Lawson By Ed Cloos

He's not a l oca l runner, but nobody has dominated local running the way Jerry Lawson has. Fr om a record setti ng two-mile at McQuaid High Schoo l to a sweep of the seven-race Upstate Cross-Country Se ries , he's been proof that Superma n live s .

He hasn't merely won his races, he's r arely finished when the runner - up was in sight. l et alone a challenge . But he doesn 't run to win, he runs to ~

Although he's been running at a national-class level, the most he's won so far is $150 and a year's supply of bagels in the Bruegger ' s SK Bagel Run. " When you ' re not chasing the buck lit makes it more genuine, I I he said while relaxing af ter the final cross-country run. I 'Genui ne?' I When's the last time you heard that from a star runner?

He does have goals , however , and the big one for this season is the Macao Marathon Dec. 6. The sponsors pay all expenses for the trip to Hong Kong , and there is a chance to win $10,000 or 50. Lawson qualified for the invitation with a 2:14:33 in the Jacksonvi lle, Fla., Marathon last January . He lived and trained there through the winter. He ' s confident his small-race training program ha s prepared him to run a faster time.

He may go back to Jacksonville this yea r, but Lawson isn't some kin~ of running bum who spends all of hlS time tr aining and resting. On the contrary, he's been working 70 hours a week or more at SUNY Upsta t e Medical Center in Syracuse . He works in distribution-delive ry of just a bout everything to everyone. This fall he worked seven 7-day weeks in a row, but managed to get in weekend races anyway .

On weeke nds, when he runs two or even three races as the speed work pa r t of his training, Lawson get~ to sleep only a few hours- - if at all . Nov . . 7, for example , he sped to victOfY in the sixth cross-country race. The next day, he won the 15K Stockade-athan in Schenectady--fo r the third time. This time he broke the

course record (which he hadn't held) by 41 seconds in 44:39 , winning by nearly three minutes .

He says he doesn't train much--j us t 70 to 120 miles a week--but he ' s feeling as fit as he's eve r been. At 26 __ I 'a young 26, my birthday was in July ' '--he's ready for a higher level.

A lot of his training is done in the hi ll s around Chittenango, his home town , where he coaches the high school varsity boys cross - country team.

He never had a Division 1 college career , having run two years at Mohawk Valley Community Co llege . In his one yea r, at Boston University, he made All-American in 10,000 meters. Hf went to Jacksonville to run at the University of North Florida. That

didn't work out, but he liked Jack sonville and it became a 5e"cond home.

Knox Robinson KNOX ROBINSON is a 17 - year-01d

senior at Orchard Park High School. His easy victory in the ope n SK at Me ndon wasn't really a substitute f o r the state meet at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island, but it was a nice way to end the season .

He ' d qualified with third pl ace i n the sectional meet (he was never ~ . ~ se than thi cd all season) , but he was in the schOOl play and could n 't get approval for alternate travel arrangements to the States.

(The play was " Class Dismissed, I ,

and Knox played the class clown . ) He has an engaging sense of humor

and hopes to become' 'a French teache r who also writes humorous tr avel books ." That will be after he attends Wake Forest University - "most likely -- lately I've had a bad case of seni o r-iti s and can't make up my mind.

He attended Rick Guido's training camps both at the Olympic Training Center and Alfred so he'd hoped to see fr iends at the l oca l r ace b ut was disapPointed. He made the trip at the urging of coach Peter Holowka who ran the race himself , finishing fourth , about a minute behind Knox .

Heather Whalen HEATHER WHA LEN, who took the lead in

the first 100 yards and dominated the women ' s race , hopes she ' s real close to becoming a teacher . Since she graduated last spring from Canisius College, the former Churchville star has been living in Buffalo and looking for a teaching job -- and running.

She ' s qualified to teach elementary school and middl e school English.

She took some time off after the college season which ended with a 36:45 10K in the ECAC championships. A PR but not quite good enough for the nationals . .

The summer season made her one of the top runners in the Buffalo area with the race for Buffalo Runner of the Year coming down to the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot where she finished second.

Like Knox, she ran the Mendon race at the urging of her high school coach. But it didn't take much since she says she real ly enjoys crosscountry .

McMullen keeps X-C title GRTC ' s Cha rlie McMu llen defended his

national TAC BK cross-country championship Nov . 21 in Boston in fairly easy fashion, beating Lar ry Olsen o f Massachusetts by 25 second s in 24, 15.

Bill Rodgers, McMull en's closest competitor last year when he didn't win the race but fini s hed as first American, was expected to be in the field but didn't show.

Th e course was really fast this year, in con tra s t to '91 when it was snow-covered mud .

The TAC championship is one of a series run this fall wi t h o thers at SK, 10K and 15K. They were on different weekends, bu t McMullen didn't have any thoughts o f trying them all. .

Volunteers Of The Month

Three cheers dus month for the committee who organized the RATS pig roast that doubled as a season-ending picnic. It's the usual people who do most of the work in your club. This time the "Big Five" were Chris & Alan Brick, Dave Michelsen, Nancy Caffo, and Karen Soehner. Others included Renee Smoyer, Laurie Cuomo, Tern Storrs, Mike Grota. Mike Baxter, Dave & Laurie Lester, and Jane O'Donnell. A real team effort. Many thanks from the rest of the club!!!

Ironman Report

In case you didn't know there are 2 of your fellow RATS who once again gave the IRONMAN some local color. Joe Lavelle and Jim Carman both fini shed this year's event with awesome times:

Joe LaVelle 10:44 (Swim:1 :17 Bike:5:30 Run:4:00)

Jim Carman 10:54 (Swim: 1:02 Bike:5:20 Run:4:30)

Both are RATs from the Elmira area. Joe is a top Biathlete in that area. Jim is the founder of the Finger Lakes Triathlon. Congratulations guys!

The rest of the RATS celebrated the event in a different way. Despite Gabher's wedding and Tom Gallagher's Multi-Sport Event conflicts, we had a good turnout of about 40 for the annual IRONMAN party at the Sports Page. We enjoyed the John Tesch commentary aDd music during the excellent 2 hr coverage of the Gatorade !ronman. NBC did a tremendous job of coverage. One of the highlight was the showing of the Asmuth's 1991 Hawaii !rooman video, with all seven local RATS - Lou Asmuth, Laurie Cuomo, Bob Dattola, Jim Krapf, Jane O'Donnell, Mark Page, Buzz Schild

Survival Of The Shawngunks Triathlon September 13, 1992 30mi bike, 4.5mi run, 1.1mi swim, 5.5mi run, .5mi swim, SIni run, .5mi swim, .7mi run

by Erik Grimm

Well here goes ...... During the past summer I have been contemplating whether to submit race reviews for the various tri's I have participated in, but decided to wait and write about the "gunks." Although, I have to admit that I have had several opportunities to say the least. I will also try to keep the debits on the left. It was a pleasant surprise to hear the weather forecast for the weekend, one which didn't inc1ude ~ither of the "C" or tlRI! words. Sunny, with highs in the mid 70's. There are triathlon gods after all. During the five hour dtive of Friday night, I was thinking of what I would do if the weather was lousy (and we all know the definition of lousy.) After all, this is not your ordinary trio I concluded that this issue would require more serious contemplation, and should be debated by those more philosophical in nature. 1 simple hoped the weather was nice.

On gur way to my grandfather's (Pop's) farm, we stopped for a delicious dinner at Mike Wilcox's mom's house in Livingston Manor. To my surprise this is not a retirement community, rather a small town in the Catskills. If you ever find yourself on route 17 and hungry, I suggest you stop in for some spaghetti and carrot cake!

Saturday was a lazy day, a short bike and run on the surrounding country roads and a swim in Pop's pond. We took the opportunity to perfect our 'swim with the shoes down the back of OUf suits' approach to the swims on the course. In retrospect. I think the method was most effective, although I do not recommend running 18

Page 31 Rochester Area TriathleteS Ipage 3

miles with sand in the crotch of your suit. I looked forward to the pre-race pasta dinner at Dominic's, a local restaurant in New Paltz. The mood was casual and friendly, yet the usual pre race anticipation was evident in the conversation of the competitors. As darleness fell, I thought to myself, the next sunlight I would see would be during the bike leg. My nerves seemed to have gotten the best of me during the preceding week. During a taper week I usually have so much energy and time on my hands. Unexplainably, I mailed a bitthday card to my Aunt, so that it would arrive on September 12th. Her birthday is January 15th.

The electronic beep of the alarm piet·ced our ear.; predictably at 5:00am, the beginning of a long day. The moon was full and the foggy country air was a crisp 40 degrees. We indulged in the $2 breakfast special, a two day old bagel, a power bar and a gulp of Gatorade to wash it down. Although it was dark and cold, the staning area was surprisingly lively at 6:00am. The competitors jovially commented on how quickly their hands and feet went numb on their wann-up rides. Gloves, stretch pants and jackets were the norm for this autumn morning. I decided that I would stan the bike in a pair of bike shorts and a T-shirt, same as Mike and John. However, after discovering that I did not bring either along, I opted for the Speedo and a tank top. Yes, it was a bit chilly and the spectators and support crews thought I was rather looney, but it worked weD to motivate me.

Mike. John and I started in the second wave, one minute behind the first. Almost immediately, I was in front of the pack. Tbe cool foggy air began to condense on my belmet and drip on my face . I knew very well it was Dot sweat. At about mile seven, I caught the leaders in the first wave and was able to pass them without much of a struggle, after which I did not relinquish the lead. Leading a race is still very new to me and I wn still not sure how to go about it. Without someone to chase, or key on, I second guess my pace and effort level. Although, this is not a bad problem_ to have. Tbe 30 mile bike course was on smooth roads which ended with a 6 mile uphill climb which lasted approximately 20-25 minutes. Just enough to build up the lactic acid in my quads before the 18 mile run !

John and Mike finished ' the bike a few minutes back. I can't pass up this opportunity to give Mike

some noteworthy credit. I don't hesitate to say that if any of us had t ride Mike's Team Fuji bike all summer we would be retired triaililetes, settling for an occasional 5K race and a lake swim. The bandana tied to the DH bars in lieu of elbow pads is the clincher. I can only make these comments because I have heard that Mike has a Stowe on order. Look out for Mike at the time trials next summer!

The bike-run transition was our last view of civilization for a while. The 4.5 mile run was primarily up-hill on a trail of rocks and cinders. Most . of the competitors said the feeling returned to their feet at about .mile three, nol too soon before the 1.I mile swim in the 66 degree Lake Awosting. At this point I was having a great time, feeling strong and joking with the volunteers at the first run-swim transition. After all it was only a 4.5 mile run. Lake Awosting is a beautiful mountain lake with clear and delicious water. I kicked off my shoes and stuffed them in the back of my suit and took the plunge. While I was in the air I could hear the volunteers cringe as they thought the water was cold. It felt refreshing to get off my feet and use a different muscle group for a change. The view of the rising sun and the trees reflecting off the brilliant blue water was inspiring . . The paddlers and the kayakers seemed to glide effortlessly by on the calm lake as my heart rate rose and lats began to ache.

By the end of the swim, I was glad to exit and begin the next 5.5 mile run leg. I was aware of the soggy shoes for about 100 yards when the ache in my legs and tightness in my shoulders overshadowed any other thoughts. After the race several competitors mentioned they had severe cramps and chills due to the long cool swim. At the end of the swim, Mike was overcome by leg cramps and had to stop and stretch. At this point on the trail, John ran by Mike, asking if he was ok. Nevertheless. John continued his journey with callous compassion for our training friend understood only by other triathletes, knowing it would get a good laugh at the fmish line.

The second run proceeded along the upper edge of the famous Shawn gunk cliffs created year.; ago by crashing continental plates. The four state view was magnificent. The fog in the valley that we had ridden out of on the bike leg had not yel dissipaled. It reminded me of being in a plane above the white puffy clouds on a sunny day. Along the way, I spotted

Page 41 Rochester Area TriathleteS . Ipage 4

a white tailed deer 20 feet from the trail. The deer spooked and trotted parallel to the trail with me for a few strides and then stopped. I figure it either knew it couldn't keep up with me, or more likely, knew that such a slow creature as me couldn't possibly be a threat.

The second swim in Lake Minawaska was similar to the first, although half the distance. Again it was refreshing to cool off and talce a drink of the deep bl~e water. Two sides of this lake are surrounded by 30-50 foot rocky cliffs similar to that of a quarry. During the swim, the upper body fatigue was beginning to slow down my stroke and weaken my pull. The swim was only .5 mile and anyone could swim hard for 12 minutes. I thought to myself. The swim-cun transition was beginning to become routine - take the wet shoes out of my suit, clean the sand from my feet, put, the wet shoes on and run. At this transition Pop and Mike's mom and the rest of the crew were cheering us on. My thoughts were on the upcoming 8 mile run.

The fIrst half of the rim was through a wooded area passing by a scenic waterfall. J decided that my bladder needed relief and this would be an opportune time. My lead was approximately 5 minutes at this point and a 20 second break would do much good. I checked the trail, all was clear, so I began. It felt great. During the process, a mountain biker came up from nowhere and began asking me for directions. Of all the people to ask directions from, I don't think a urinating triathlete during a race is the best choice. I forgot what I actually said but I remember thinking I should have said "ask the next guy you see running by in a speedo."

Trapps bridge marks the ntidway point of the third run. Just beyond the trail was crowded with rock climbers as this is a world famous rock climbing area. I enjoyed the puzzled expressions of onlookers as they watched a tired triathlete run by with a swim cap tucked in his speedo. At this point I began counting the minutes to the fmal swim.

My strength and enthusia~tic attitude were left somewhere back on the trail and from here on out I was fuelled by the notions that I) triathIetes don't quit, 2) it would be allover shortly and I would probably win, and 3) Jim Krapf and several other RATS finished Hawaii which is much longer.

Not to my surprise, John found people to run with during portions of the roce. The last leg he and recent Rochester transplant Larry Krieger connected. No doubt John took these opPQrtunities to release.a few dry, sarcastic comments or to talce to some liberal bashing. As most of us know and welcome, John is quick to come up with a hilarious, off·the-wall comment during a long workout.

The Lake Mohunk swim was painful. My arms felt like sledgehammers; it was an effort to lift my arms out of the water and even worse to pull! I thought to myself, anyone could swim hard for 10 ntinutes. My definition of hard changed throughout the race. At the beginning, swinnnting hard meant long powerful strokes and good form. At tbe end, swimming was just plain hard. Nevertheless, I reached the opposite side and proceeded with the transition routine, knowing a 5 minute run was between me and the finish. A quick look back to see if the second place competitor was a threat, but he was in the ntiddle of the lake, about 5 minutes back. At this point I knew I would be first to finish, so I started the climb to the tower. To my surprise I fmished in 4:22.30, a new course record by 2 minutes and an improvement of 16 minutes from last year. (I can't belp thinking that an elite triathlete's time would be under 4 hours .)

John and Mike finished near 5 hours with very respectable times, each heating their personal goals by a few minutes. At the finish, we had time to eat and drink the post race goodies while taking in the wonderful view of Lake Monhuok, the Shawngunk cliffs and the valley below. Both the competitors and the volunteers were friendly and enjoyed talking about the race. We were survivors!

Much thanks to our support crews; Mike's mom and relatives and Pop and Willie Grimm. (And Mindy for letting John go.) A special thanks to John McFarland and Mike Wilcox for their inspiration during the year and letting me talk them into this.

The way I figure (from a bean counters perspective), a race is a success if you want to go back the following year. I know I do and I suggest you talk to John and Mike so they can share their unbiased feelings . If this sounds at all interesting to you, I highly recommend you give it a try too!

Lawson, Forbes win Bruegger's Bagel Run The Bruegger's Bagel Run 5K started

out last season as the biggest race of the fall season, and one of the best. This year the GRTC-managed race figured to be even better. The race was, but the weather wasn't as total finishers were off a little at 431.

The Nov. 1 race did attract a star, however, as Jerry Lawson of Syracuse, the top runner in Upstate New York this season, made the early-morning trip to run off with the $100 first prize and an extra $50 for breaking last year's record. He did that by 71 seconds as he made the 3.1-rnile loop from the JCC in 14:22.

Charlie McMullen, first master, was runner-up in 15:30 (also breaking last year I s record). Pr ize money was $50 for second and $25 for first master, but rules called for just one award per entry.

Anne Forbes, 16th overall, was first woman in 17:04, also breaking the course record. Runnerup Renee Rombaut, with 17:24, made it a much closer race than the men's, but not too close for comfort. Joanne Wightman was first master in 19:27.

Most of the leaders were runners who've been participating in fall cross-country. Roger Hawks, defending champion and last year's cross-country series winner, was third, but nearly two minutes behind McMullen.

Overall winners got certificates for a dozen bagels a week for a year.

This year there was team competition based on the total of the three best times by up to five runners. Antonio Eppolito, David Patruno, Stephen McMahon and Alan Willmes, the Patruno Electric Racing Team, led with 48:16. Jennifer Shaver, Robin DeLorm and Kristin Mallory combined for 59:48 to lead the women.

By comparison, Lawson ran 15K in 44:39 a week later in setting a course record in a race in Schenectady.

Although the overall races weren't that close, there was good competition among the age groups. Jennifer Treat edged Lisette Reyes by five seconds with her 20:45 in 19-23. Carol Bischoff's 19:51 was nine seconds better than triathlete Chris Agresta's time in 24-29. In the next age group, Maureen Minavio held off Karen Soehner by 13 seconds with 19:50.

They aren't in the same age group which made it all the sweeter for

Gloria Brown, 60, of Grand Island, when she edged Carolyn Kriesen, the 45-49 winner. Both had the same time of 21:28. Brown was the only entrant in her age group.

Close races among the men included Dennis Kinney (16:49) beating Dave O'Leary by five seconds in 30-34. Charlie Andrews (16:15) was 18 seconds ahead of Frank Goetz in 35-39. The masters 40-44 race saw Paul Persia (16:56) 14 seconds ahead of Tom Serafin. Jim Ferris, the 50-54 winner, was third over 40 in 17:15 .

GRTC Meeting Minutes, Tuesday" November 10 , 1992 , 7 : 00 pm

Minutes* of the GRTC Board of Directors Meeting, Midtown Tennis Club (*not yet presented to or approved by board). Executive Committee present: Mimi Decker, Bob DiGiacco, Jane Iaculli, Lisa Bower. Directors present: Bob Dyjak, George Tillson , Paul Richards, Mark Harrison, WaIt Check, Ed Cloos . Others: Joe Kubek, Dick withrow, Dennis Moriarty, Dave Kemp, Norm Hanover. Absent: Rick Guido, Rick Iovine, Ross Rider.

AGENDA: Minutes from October Meeting; Treasurer's Report; Freezeroo Series; winter Track; Section V Business; Race Reports : Couples Run, GRTC/Hilton Marathon, Bruegger's SK, Turkey Trot; Hall of Fame Awards; President's Report; Work Committee Meeting Agenda.

A TREASURER'S REPORT for October-November was presented by Jane Iaculli. Income was $4228 and expenditures were about $4600. The account balance was $3910.97.The meeting MINUTES from the October 1992 meeting were approved and accepted as submitted.

, Dennis Moriarty reported that the FREEZEROO Race Series will begin December 12th with the last race on February 27th. There will be awards for series registrants, and t-shirts will be available for sale.

Bob DiGiacco said that the BRUEGGER'S Bagel SK at the JCC went well. The race will need a new director next year as Bob will be unavailable. Bob is working on paperwork from this year's race .

Joe Kubek reported that the GRTC Turkey Trot race plans were under control. The Greece Olympia cross country team will help out with registration, etc. There was a discussion on the advisability and logistics of mailing out race forms to certain ' mailing lists at this late date but it was decided not to.

Walt Check reported on the GRTC / Bilton Marathon. There were fewer entries than was projected (228 actual VB. 350 planned) and Borne unexpected expenses so the marathon lost money ($ 12 78.95) . Walt did not know what to attribute the lower number of entrants to~ a discussion followed on what could be changed (date, location , distance, etc.) to attract more runners next year.

Mimi Decker reported that congratulatory letters will go out to the Ball of Fame recipients, especially to those who were not present at the banquet (Bill Kehoe and Beth DeCiantis). Mimi submitted her resignation from the position of president to the board, effective the end of November, She would like to remain on as a board member and retain her involvement in the Corn Hill 5K and the Lilac 10K if GRTC is active in that race.

Jane Iaculli asked for everyone to attend a work committee meeting on Monday, November 16th at Mid-Town at 7 pm, which was a date agreeable to most. Dick Withrow and Joe Kubek e xpressed an interest in becoming GRTC board of directors members.

Dave Kemp discussed a possible location for GRTC equipment storage but there are dampness and accessibility issues to address. There would be minimal cost to GRTC. Dave also offered to help out, with the Newsletter, A new editor is needed, and Dave would be interested in coordinating the new "staff".

The next Board of Directors meeting is planned for Tuesday, December 8th . As ever, all GRTC members are invited to attend. Minutes submitted by Lisa Bower, 11 /92 .
