VIERA CHARTER SCHOOL
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
Dr. Julie Cady
Principal
It is hard to believe that it is already interim
time. Time has certainly flown by. You will
want to take this opportunity to review your
student’s assignments and grades with them.
Please encourage your child to make sure their
grades are where they need to be. This is also
a great time to meet with your child’s teachers;
especially, if there are any areas of concern.
I want to give a special thank
you to the administrators, staff,
teachers, and family volunteers
who came to school after the
hurricane to cleanup the school
and get it ready for the students’
return. — Thank You!

Kindergarten and First Grade classes opened the school year discussing citizenship
throughout their Social Studies’ lessons. The focus of being a good citizen in our
classrooms, at our school, and in our community was introduced and put into
action.
“As good citizens, the students will care for
and respect others. Students will work on
following the rules and improving our
communities,” said first grade teacher Ms.
McMenamy, “It not only helps us now in
class, it helps build a great world.”

Student News—Kindergarten and First Grades
Middle School teacher Mary Rabun was
selected as Teacher of the Year for
2017-2018.
“One of her students approached me and
said she was so glad her ‘favorite teacher of
all time’ was selected because ‘she makes
learning fun,” VCS Principal Dr. Cady told
teachers and staff September 20 when
presenting the award.
“Ms. Rabun gives
students plenty of
time and structure to plan for success and then she supervises them to
complete that vision. She represents the caliber of teaching talent we are
proud of at VCS!
Dr. Cady also presented Employee of the Year honors to Demetria “Dee Dee”
Mills for going above and beyond the call of duty, citing the recent cleanup
of Hurricane Irma aftermath as just one example of her good work ethic.

Second graders have been busy being proactive, beginning with the end in mind,
putting first things first, thinking win-win, seeking first to understand and then be
understood, synergizing, and sharpening the saw. They are putting their 7 Habits
of Happy Kids into action from the beginning of the school year! Parents please
don’t be surprised if your second grader takes out the trash without being asked,
does their homework before playing, without being told, and are getting along
better with friends and family. Just think of a house where the words “I’m
bored” will not be heard again as students are focusing on their 7 Habits!
Second Graders are excited to be implementing the 7 Habits all year long and
develop leadership from a very early age. So the next time you see a second
grader don’t be
surprised to see them
showing leadership
doing by doing hard
things first BEFORE they
play. Second Graders
are proud to show off
their leadership!

Viera Charter School kicked off its Student of the Month
campaign with the selection of kindergartener Cadence
Young, chosen by her teacher, Mrs. Wyatt, for exhibiting
the character trait of Respect.
“ Cadence is a role model for her peers because she
shows respect for herself, her classmates, her teachers
and her surroundings,” Mrs. Wyatt said. “It’s the first step
in learning to get along with one another.”

Growth Mindset: Fourth graders explored the idea of
mindsets by attempting to recreate a cut and folded
piece of paper. Several were able to cut their own
version but many were very frustrated. The teacher
wrote down what she heard the students saying as they
were working. Many fixed mindsets filled our room. A
fixed mindset is having negative feelings and thoughts
when challenged to do something hard. A growth
mindset is when you persevere by staying positive and
understanding that you haven’t been able to do it YET!
Fourth Grade
Fifth Grade
The fifth graders have been learning a ton
about the 7 Habits of being an effective leader.
These habits can be used in the classroom, at
home, and even in extracurricular activities.
Each class broke into small groups and created
a “Road Map to Leadership” in which they
explained what each habit represents in a fun
and creative way.

Middle school is in full swing with smiling faces and excited students about all the clubs, sports and activities Viera Charter School has to offer. Eighth graders are currently running for Student Council positions. As you see, our students have taken much time and thought in preparing their campaign posters and speeches. We have a great group of students who are eager and excited to make VCS the best school ever. With their efforts, they will be in leadership roles which allow them the opportunity to assist in planning and hosting middle school dances, activities such as “Red Ribbon Week”, “Anti- Bullying Week”, and school spirit and much more. As our leaders at Viera Charter School, we are excited for our middle school students and are off to a great year! Mrs. Goizueta
Our 6th graders are adjusting to the life of a VCS middle schooler with great success! They are learning their way around the hallways, finding their classes on time and meeting new friends along the way! All have learned about Growth Mindset and are working to include this mindset in their journey at VCS! All of the teachers are incorporating AVID strategies into their classroom settings and many college pennants can be seen in different areas of the middle school. Binders are keeping our 6th graders organized as well! We are off and running in 6th grade! Mrs. Hoffman

Younger students as well as peers look up to Safety Patrol members, and faculty and staff shower them with genuine appreciation for their assistance. The club takes
students with good character and develops it further.
“Safety Patrol is a great leadership club because it helps students see the importance of helping others,” said Mrs. Hoffman, club faculty advisor.
“With a welcoming smile or a helping hand at a car door, the students in Safety Patrol spread the feeling of warmth in our Panther community.”
Seventh grader Alex Sosa had a winning
summer. Out of 104 teams, his team,
Phenoms Elite, finished third out of 104
teams across the country. Alex, a catcher, hit
seven home runs.
Alex’s favorite team is the New York Yankees.
The thought of getting to play for them
brought a smile to his face.
“That would be crazy. It would be a lot of
work, but I’m willing to put in the effort.”
According to Alex’s teacher, Mrs. Key, it’s not
out of the realm of possibility.
“Alex is a very respectful and sharp
student. He’s polite to his teachers and classmates and works hard in class. It will be
great to keep an eye on him and remember ‘we knew him when.’ ”
