TECHNOLOGIES INVOLVED IN THAI CAVE RESCUE

Twelve boys and their coach were trapped in a cave deep underground with dwindling air and danger of being flooded by rising water levels. How did a determined international team

find and rescue the boys? How did sophisticated geographical information systems (GIS), IOT sensors and 3D simulations assist the rescuers?

Tham Luang Nang Non is a six mile long underground cave complex in Thailands’s Chi-angrai province. A soccer team was reported missing in July 2018. Thai Navy seal divers found them in a cave that could only be reached after a six hour underground journey in the dark,swimming through dark tunnels and climbing boulders. An international rescue team with experts from Thailand, China, Japan, Australia, the US and Britain were able to rescue them.

MONITORING OXYGEN LEVELS AND WATER:Xylem, Nivers and Omega provide water flow sensors for such

cases. Advanced micro instruments and C02 meter provide sensors to monitor oxygen levels and protect against asphyxiation. Hourly map updates showed current water depth and air quality, alerting rescuers of the changing conditions. Mapping team collected sensor readings of water and oxygen levels at the cave entrance at 300 meters and at 1500 meters.

TRANSMITTING DATA FROM DEEP UNDERGROUND

Transmissions from such sensors typically rely on Lorawan, Sigfox and Narrowband internet of things (NB-IOT).

NB-IOT improves the power consumption of user devices. System capacity and spectrum efficiency, especially in deep coverage with battery life upto ten years.

The department of disaster prevention and mitigation used the data generated by continuous monitoring to coordinate the cave search and rescue. The map alerted rescuers to changing water and oxygen conditions in the cave at different observation points. The mapping team also monitored weather radar feeds to understand the volume of rain falling at the surface. Divers continued to plan and stage the rescue attempt, hoping to reduce each one-way trip under the nine hours it was taking.

3D MAPPING OF CAVESLIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is often used to map caves and

other surfaces. An optical LIDAR sensor transmits laser beams and the reflection of the laser from the target is detected and analyzed by receivers.

The receivers record the precise time from when the laser pulse left the system to, when it is returned to calculate the range distance between the

sensor and the target. This is combined with positional information GPS (Global Positioning System), and INS (Internal Navigation System), to produce a very accurate three-

Changes in technology shape every aspect of our lives. Music not an exception. Around the turn of the 20th century, with the invention of the gramophone record and radio broadcasting, there was a vast increase in music listening and it was easier to distribute music to a wider public.

New recording technology, new musical technology and new listening technology have meant that the way of music has been changed completely.

With the invention of recording technology, we have moved from records, to cassettes, to cds etc.

The actual production of music has also been affected. Many artists rely on auto tuning technology, so that any imperfections in their pitch or tone can be corrected. Voices can be made to sound completely different in a recording studio.

New genres of music has also been created. Electronic music genres rely on the use of electronic instruments to create sounds and songs that wouldn’t be possible with traditional instruments.

There’s often a lot of prejudice in using these artificial methods. But as it is said, “ More of anything is bad”. So, advancement in technology should not completely change the way we listen to music or the way, music is created but can be a supporting pillar.

Durgawati Devi was an Indian revolutionary and a freedom fighter. She was one of the few women revolutionaries who actively participated in

armed revolution against the ruling British Raj. She is the best known for having accompanied Bhagat Singh in a train journey in which he made his escape in disguise after the Saunders killing. She was born on 7th October 1907 at Ghaziabad, Uttarpradesh. She was an organizer in Hindustan Socialist Republican Association and Naujawan Bharat Sabha. Durgawati Devi was married to Bhagwati Charan Vohra who was an active member of Naujawan Bharat Sabha. Durgawati Devi came into prominence when the sabha decided to observe the 11th Anniversary of Karbar Singh Saraba's Martrydom on 16th November 1926. She was instrumental in helping Bhagat Singh to escape after the killing. Unlike other freedom fighters Durgawati Devi after Indian Independence movement, rose like a meteor on the horizon of India’s freedom struggle wielding tremendous influence on revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh. She later opened a school for poor in Lucknow. Durgawati Devi died in Ghaziabad on 15th October 1999 at the age of 92 in her hometown.

RAJAGOPALACHARIChakravarti Rajagopalachari,

informally called Rajaji or C.R was an Indian politician, Independence activist, lawyer, writer, historian and statesman. Rajagopalachari was the last Governor-General of India as India became Republic in 1950. He founded the Swatantra Party and was one of the first recipients of India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. He vehemently opposed the use of nuclear weapons and was a proponent of world peace and disarmament. He joined the Indian National Congress and participated in the agitations against the Rowlatt Act, joining the Non-Cooperation movement and civil disobedience movement. His interest in public affairs and politics began when he commenced his legal practice in Salem. Rajagopalachari became Gandhiji’s follower after he joined Indian Independence movement. He stated that passivity and neutrality would be harmful to India’s interests at a time when the country was threatened with invasion. He has also contributed to literature and music. He wrote an abridged retelling of Mahabharata in English and also translated Kamba Ramayana in English. His health faced a decline and he died on 25th December 1972 at the age of 94.

FREEDOM FIGHTER FROM TAMILNADU

V.O. CHIDAMBARAM PILLAIVallinayan Ulaganathan Chidambaram popularly

known as V.O.C. He wa also known as “Kappalottiya Tamizhan” who was a freedom fighter and a leader of Indian National Congress. He was a disciple of Bal Gangadar Tilak. He launched the first indegenous Indian Shipping service between Tuticorin and Colombo with the Swadeshi Stream Navigation company. Chidambaram started an Indian-Owned shipping company in October 1906. He also gave a speech at Thoothukudi encouraging the workers at Cora Mill to protest against their low wages. In 1920, Chidambaram withdrew himself from Indian National Congress citing ideological differences with Mahatma Gandhi. He focused establishing labour unions in Madras and also in writing. He had written the first book of Thirukkural, book of virtue and was published under a different title. He was initiated by Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Lala Lajpat Rai of INC. He also became a spokesperson for Madras Presidency. He established many institutions like Madras Agro-Industries Society etc. He died on 18 November 1936.
