We will be covering simple revision and then completing a project which will allow you to develop your knowledge and understanding.

By then end of this revision you should be about to tell me the SOURCE and FUNCTION of the nutrient and ANY CONSEQUENCE for eating TOO MUCH or TOO LITTLE of it.

What does that mean????

NUTRIENT REVISION

Please complete this task to the best of your ability as we will be using

it as part of an evidence portfolio to establish your working level.

Source: where you get it from

Function: What it does

Consequence: what happens next…

Within this workbook we will be revising the source and function of different nutrients and potential consequences of either having too much or too little of them.

We will be covering:

CARBOHYDRATES: BOTH SIMPLE AND COMPLEX PROTEIN FATS: BOTH SATURATED AND UNSATURATED SODIUM (SALT) IRON CALCIUM VITAMIN A VITAMIN D VITAMIN C

CARBOHYDRATECarbohydrate comes in 2 forms: Complex and Simple

Using Lecke & Lecke Level 3 Home Economics p.48, complete the following statements:

1. The body uses carbohydrate for __________________.

2. If you don’t use up all the energy that you eat it will be turned into ________.

3. Complex carbohydrate is also known as ____________.

4. Examples of starch carbohydrate are____________, ____________, ___________ & __________.

5. What else is contained in startchy foods? ______________.

6. Firbre helps prevent _______________.

7. Complex carbohydrates give you ___________ release energy so it takes _____________ for it to be used.

8. Sugars are also known as ______________________.

9. It provides energy but no other _____________________.

10. Sugar is found in ___________, ____________, _____________, & ____________.

11. Sugar provides food for _____________________________ found on the surface of the teeth which works

to damage the enamel.

Identify which carbohydrates are in these products (is it simple, complex or both?): write next to the images C, S or B

Draw me 4 products which contain COMPLEX carbohydrate.

Draw me 4 products which contain SIMPLE carbohydrate.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU EAT TOO MUCH?

If you eat too much energy then your body will convert it into FAT. If you have too much fat in your body then your weight will increase and you will become overweight.

As your weight increases you run the risk of developing OBESITY.

Use p.74 in Lecke & Lecke Home Economics to complete the following statements.

There is more risk of ____________ _____________ ____________ because your heart is under strain having to cope with carrying extra weight around.

This can lead to ___________ ____________ ____________.

Obesity massively increases the risk of you developing ____________.

Obesity increases the risk of _____________.

It puts strain on your ______________ and ______________.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU EAT TOO LITTLE?...If eat TOO LITLE then you can become tired and lacking in energy. In extreme cases your body will use protein in your muscles to power your body.

A recent survey predicted that obesity rates could reach ___ by

2030.

___ of 5 year old boys and ___ of 5 year old girls are over

weight.

ENERGY CONTENT IN FOOD IS MEASURED IN ________

Protein is vital for _______________ particularly in children.

It is also used for the __________________ of __________ ________.

If we eat too much protein it is used as a source of ____________.

You can get protein from both _____________ and ____________ sources.

_____________, _____________, ______________ and ____________ are all examples of animal based proteins.

_____________, _____________ and _______________ are all examples of plant based proteins.

Eating too little protein will mean you don’t ___________ or ___________ properly.

FATSUsing Lecke & Lecke Level 3 Home Economics p.46, complete the following statements:

Fat is used in the body for ___________, to ___________ _____ ____________ when stored under the skin, as a source of ____________________. It also provides us with _______________ ___________ _______.

There are 2 types of fat: _________________ and ________________.

_______________ fat is found in animal sources and _______________ fat is found in oily fish, oils, seeds and nuts.

Saturated fat is ____________ at room temperature and unsaturated fat is usually ____________ at room temperature.

Eating too much ________________ fat is linked to ___________ disease and obesity.

Foods that are high in saturated fat include _____________, _________________, ____________________, _______________, and _________________.

Examples of food that contain unsaturated fat are _____________, ______________ & ______________.

Food is high in saturated fat when it contains ________ per 100g and is low in saturated fat when there is ______ per 100g.

Fats that you can’t see are called ____________ fats.

What happens if you eat too much?

Fat is a concentrated source of energy. That means you get a lots of energy from eating a little fat. This can lead to you developing OBESITY.

Over time a diet high in saturated fats will leave deposits in your arteries which can block them and stop the blood from travelling to your heart. This is one of the main causes of HEART DISEASE. If the artery becomes blocked completely, you will have a HEART ATTACK.

Normal Artery Blocked Artery

Using the information on p.74 fill in the boxes below with the dietary diseases and negative physical impact of obestiry.

Using the information on p.74 of Lecke & Lecke Home Economics , Complete the information below:

Using the information on p.53 in Lecke and Lecke Home Economics Level 3 to complete the following:

In the 1700’s ships and their crew spent a very long time at sea. Because of this they would not have sources of fresh fruit and vegetables as they didn’t last for the whole journey without going off. This meant they didn’t have a good source of vitamin C which caused the them to develop ________________.
