1972 - 1978: Instructor of astronomy and physics, Cañada College, Redwood City, California.Expanded the introductory astronomy and physics program from just two courses to six and considerably increased enrollments in physical science courses. Taught several innovative interdisciplinary courses (science and humanities.)

2012 on: Co-founder and co-instructor, Astronomy Ambassadors Program, American Astronomical Society & Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Includes workshops, resource materials, and a web-based community to help early-career astronomers get more skilled in public outreach.

2005 - 2012: Senior Educator, Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Educational consultant, advisor, and team member on a range of projects, including one to train educators at small

2002 - 2009: Co-editor (with Sidney Wolff) of Astronomy Education Review, an on-line journal/newsletter, first sponsored by the National Optical Astronomy Observatories, and then published by the American Astronomical Society. Was founder and co-editor; then senior editorial advisor. Wrote the white paper that defined the structure of the journal. 1999 – 2005: Founder & Director, Family ASTRO, at the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.This is an ongoing national program, originally supported by the National Science Foundation, to create kits of activities and training protocols to engage diverse families in the process of scientific exploration outside of the formal school curriculum.

1999 – present: Organizer and Moderator, Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, (cosponsored by NASA’s Ames Research Center, SETI Institute, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and Foothill College): 6 non-technical public talks to audiences of 400 – 950 people per year; now available on video at YouTube: www.youtube.com/SVAstronomyLectures, where the lectures have over a million views.

1996 - 2011: Founder, Moderator, and Chair of the Organizing Committee for “Cosmos in the Classroom,” a series of national symposia on teaching astronomy non-science majors (1996, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2010)

1993 - 2006: Founder & Director, Project ASTRO, at the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.ASTRO is a National Science Foundation supported project, to train and bring visiting astronomers into 4th through 9th grade classrooms in a dozen sites around the country, and to develop materials and teaching strategies for astronomer-teacher partnerships.

1985 - 1993: Founding Editor, The Universe in the Classroom.The Universe in the Classroom is a quarterly newsletter on teaching astronomy in grades 3 - 12, published by the ASP. It is read by many thousands of teachers around the world.

1982 - 1984: Host and Producer, "Exploring the Universe", KGO-FM.Wrote, produced, and hosted a two-hour weekly science interview and talk show on the ABC-owned FM radio station in San Francisco.

1980 - 1992: Organizer and co-instructor: The Universe in the Classroom Workshops.These summer workshops on teaching astronomy in grades 3-12, were taught at a different university campus each year. They brought together 100-200 teachers from around the U.S. and Canada for an intensive credit program on activities, resources, and strategies.
