The Brimbank Family and Children’s Newsletter shares information that is relevant to families, children and service providers in Brimbank. The focus is on local activities, events and learning opportunities.

This newsletter is collated and distributed by Brimbank Communities for Children Facilitating Partner, a federally funded initiative that develops partnerships between families, communities, local government and service providers.

Communities for Children FP takes a collaborative approach in seeking to achieve better outcomes for children aged 0-12 and their families.

2018 Brimbank Families and Children Expo Continuing on from Children’s Week, Brimbank Communities for Children Facilitating Partner, The Smith Family is excited to be hosting the 2018 Brimbank Families and Children Expo!

The Expo provides an opportunity for families and children (0-12 years) from and around the Brimbank area to meet and talk with community professionals about the services and programs available. As well as learning about what is available in our community there will be fun activities such as an animal nursery, a sausage sizzle and toys and learning games for the young ones.

Who will be there?: Parenting and family support programs, playgroups, disability and carers’ support, training and education, libraries, sports and recreation and settlement programs for newly arrived families. So come and join us for an informative day filled with fun!

Building Blocks Young Mums Supported PlaygroupBuilding Blocks is a supported/facilitated playgroup for young mums, including pregnant young women (up to 25 years of age) and their pre-school children. Building Blocks runs weekly during school terms for 2 hours each session and is an opportunity to meet with other young mums and their children, make new friends, have fun, eat yummy healthy morning tea and learn about parenting in a relaxed place. Qualified Abecedarian Approach facilitator with a focus on children’s language development, social and emotional wellbeing and enhancing strong parent/child relationships.

Learning English with Arts & Crafts Activities (Conversational English/No Accreditation or Certification) A Community Hubs Australia program that encourages community members to be part of a group where the aim is to develop basic conversational skills in English language. This is done through a delivery of both formal instructions and hands on learning. The program will be divided into two, 2 hour sessions, held on 2 different days. The 1st hour will be beginner level English program where participants learn basic conversational skills, questioning and answering techniques. The 2nd hour, will involve an arts and crafts session which will be a hands on learning experience to develop vocabulary skills.

Safe Resolutions – Free Legally Assisted Mediation Service for Vietnamese Separated Families in the WestWe provide legally assisted family dispute resolution (also known as mediation, to help Vietnamese separated parents to resolve their family law disputes safely. Disputes include:

Arrangements of where their children will live; How the children will see the other parent; and Arrangements of how to divide their property and assets post separation.

We have highly experienced mediators and lawyers, Vietnamese interpreters who are trained in family law, and Vietnamese speaking staff at our centre. If these separated parents are experiencing family violence, our Vietnamese Family Safety Worker can provide them with support.

Tuning in to Kids – Emotionally Intelligent Parenting Tuning in to Kids program supports parents to enhance their parenting skills, focusing on using emotional coaching to strengthen the relationship between parent and child. Tuning into Kids is provided by Relationships Australia Victoria’s Early Matters program and is backed by evidence – based research. What the program offers:

Provides skills to support parents to help children understand and manage their emotions. Provides information and skills to parents to help reduce family conflict and increase positive

The ‘ParentsNext’ program is an Australian Government initiative that supports parents with children up to 6 years of age who have been in receipt of the parenting payment for the last 6 months to identify their education and employment goals, and develop a plan to achieve them. Our ParentsNext program supports Parents with young children to link with local services and activities and promote positive family life and community connections. Other parenting supports include, child care assistance and connections to health, social and other local community groups.

Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services delivers the ParentsNext program across 13 locations in Western Melbourne. Djerriwarrh has been supporting our local community in Melbourne’s West since 1989. Supporting Expecting & Parenting Teens (SEPT) Program – BRAVE Foundation Are you 25 or under and began parenthood as a teen? Are you pregnant or a parenting teen?

Brave Foundation is an Australian Charity that builds a village of support and acceptance around expecting and parenting teens. Brave Foundation partners with, and promotes existing pregnancy and parenting support services and educational opportunities. The SEPT Program utilizes an Interactive Pathway Plan which is tailored to every individual to connect and provide parenting support, life support and educational opportunities in their local communities. It enables expecting and parenting teens to identify their goals, aspirations and ambitions for further study, training and employment within their own communities. Program participants range from 13 – 25 years old (male and female) and are in receipt of Centrelink payments. If the participant is no longer a teen, then they must have started parenthood as a teen. Participants are supported by a one-on-one mentor.

The Community Asthma Program (Cap) - CohealthA community program that provides free asthma education and support for children and their families with asthma is being run by cohealth. An asthma educator works with children and their families to:

Aboriginal Cradle To KinderWestern VACCA are pleased to announce the commencement of Aboriginal Cradle to Kinder in thewest of Melbourne (LGA’s Brimbank/ Melton and Wyndham/ Hobson’s Bay/ Maribyrnong/MooneeValley/ Melbourne).

Aboriginal Cradle to Kinder offers culturally appropriate practical support for Aboriginal families frompre-birth of a child through to when the child reaches 4 years of age.

The target group for the Aboriginal Cradle to Kinder service is young pregnant Aboriginal women or women (under 25) pregnant with an Aboriginal child:

Gestational from 26 weeks to six weeks of age (post birth). where a report to Child Protection has been received for their unborn (or newborn) child, and

where the referrer has significant concerns for the wellbeing of the unborn (or newborn) child, or where there are a number of indicators of vulnerability and/or concerns for the wellbeing of the

unborn child and the woman is not involved with the Child Protection system.

The target group is not restricted to first time parents, as parenting issues may be experienced and may in some instances escalate with the addition of each new child. Where there are older siblings inthe family, the program will work with siblings as well as the new baby.

Nonviolent Approaches to Child and Adolescent Violence - Berry Street Childhood InstituteChild and adolescent violence directed towards parents and carers is a growing area of concern. Webinar – Give children a bigger voice more of the time: Children’s and young people’s experiences of the family law systemThis webinar will present findings of the Children and young people in separated families study, which investigated the experiences and needs of young people whose parents had separated and had accessed the family law system.
