Meath School & Specialist Centre

I CAN's Meath School (www.meathschool.org.uk) based in Ottershaw, Surrey is a day and residential non-maintained primary special school for up to 75 pupils aged 4 to 11 years, where severe and complex speech, language and communication needs, including Asperger's Syndrome, is the primary need.

Our most recent Ofsted report (2016 ) is highly positive about the work of the school and the progress which our children make. The school is bursting with energy: all staff push pupils to achieve beyond the limits of what previously might have been thought possible. In particular, the pupils themselves develop an inspiring determination to learn, achieve success and overcome their difficulties.

A clear sense of moral purpose drives the school : to unlock pupils’ ability to speak and communicate so that they can appreciate and forge links with the world around them. The school’s relentless focus on developing speech and communication skills is tangible even in the youngest pupils. No opportunity is missed to encourage and praise talk and conversation.

Meath School is one of a very few schools in the UK which is tailor made for only young learners with SLCN. The school and care settings have been recognised repeatedly as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted since 2008.

I CAN is the children’s communication charity.

We are experts in helping children develop the speech, language and communication skills they need to thrive in a 21st century world.

Our vision is a world where all children have the communication skills they need to fulfil their potential.

Our mission is that no child should be left out or left behind because of a difficulty speaking or understanding.

I CAN, founded in 1888 as The Invalid Children’s Aid Association, has provided invaluable support to children and their families for 128 years. Throughout its history, a focus on children with disabilities and the promotion of social mobility have been at the centre of its work. In the very early days, I CAN volunteers would visit poor families in the East End of London to teach disabled children who otherwise received no education. This was followed by programmes supporting children with tuberculosis, chronic asthma and rheumatic heart disease. During WWII, I CAN evacuated disabled children out of London, a group ignored by the government during the evacuation of other children. In 1958, the John Horniman School, I CAN’s first school for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) was opened in Worthing, West Sussex. In 1982 the organisation officially became known as I CAN and by the 1990s all of its work concentrated on supporting children with SLCN, which remains the case today. I CAN today consists of two special schools, Meath and Dawn House; a social enterprise that develops and distributes a wide range of materials, training packages and interventions across the nation; the I CAN Help portfolio of information and advice for parents, carers and practitioners; and is the host for The Communication Trust, a consortium of over 50 organisations in the field of communications.

I CAN’s evidence-based programmes and training aim to provide practical help and support at every age and stage of a child’s and young person’s life. We work directly with the people who educate, care for, support and advise children and families. All our approaches are based on the best evidence available to ensure that children receive help that will get results. Our programmes are designed to help schools to meet Ofsted’s focus on developing and using pupils’ communication skills and to support settings and schools to narrow the gap between the lowest and highest attainment. Many of I CAN’s programmes and training use a cascade model. We have a network of expert Licensees across the UK, able to respond to local needs quickly and flexibly.

For more information about I CAN, its work and values go to www.ican.org.uk or www.talkingpoint.org.uk

Our ValuesLanguage skills are essential for children to survive and thrive, since language is the foundation for all relationships and learning. I CAN is:

Child-centred – We are here to help children. We work directly with them, and with those that care for them, and include children and young people in our decision making.

Communicative – Communication is our passion and improving communication is at the heart of everything that we do. Because good communication is always two-way, we listen and respond clearly to children, their families and those who work with us.

Expert – We strive for excellence in everything we do by using evidence, expertise and experience. We use our resources effectively to make the greatest impact; evaluating this impact is central to our work.

Innovative – We aim to change things for the better and are constantly developing and evaluating new and effective approaches to support children and their families.

Involving – We value the contribution of others. By working together, we can make a greater impact on more children's lives.

Transparent – We share information about our plans and progress so that we are accountable for everything we do.

Equality of opportunity is central to what we do.
