Thought for this week….by Rev. Michelle Butcher

This morning we gathered for Morning Prayer, and as is usual during our times of Morning Prayer, we spent some time listening to the set Bible readings for the day, and talking through some of the things that stood out to us.

Our Bible readings today included a reading from John 19 – the moment when Jesus was on the cross and he asked the disciple whom he loved to look after and care for his Mother. We spent some time reflecting on Jesus’s words, and about how Jesus’s last words before he died were not big demands on the rights and wrongs of life, but were a simple request that his friend would care for his Mum. We all felt very challenged. Certainly, as I have continued to reflect on these words and our discussion today, I have found myself drawn deeper into these words, wondering how I can respond to them.

When we meet together, God is there in the midst of us. It is such a gift, one which so many Christians around the world don’t have, to come together to pray, to listen to God’s word and to explore that word together. I find these times such an encouragement in my own journey of faith.

As we enter again into the season of Lent, I would encourage you to think about your own journey and those times when you have found it helpful having others beside you. Maybe think about joining our Benefice Lent Group, or coming along to Morning Prayer at St Johns or St Aidan’s Church

– even if it’s just for the six weeks of Lent. Come and be blessed by the gift of fellowship as we walk this path together and seek to discover more about the God we worship.

Amen.
