Things You Need to KnowEach person in this building has chosen to work here, and we do so because we enjoy working with 9th and 10th graders. We have an open-door policy and always welcome input from students and parents. It is going to be a great year, and we want to help you get off to a good start with the following information.

The student handbook is accessible online or you may request a printed copy. The student handbook contains rules and regulations you will need to be familiar with
during your years at LHSK and LHS.LHS Killough Important Information
Accelerated block has four classes a day with 1 1/2 hours spent in each. An absence of one day equals two absences in regard to the class work. Over four
absences could result in a loss of credit. Before and after school tutoring is available and should be arranged with the student's
teacher. All students can re-test any test failed, except finals, for a maximum grade of 70.
Students need to arrange to re-test with their teachers before or after school or during block lunch.
The best way to contact a teacher is by e-mail. (See school website) Progress reports can be found in Skyward every three weeks. Grades are updated in
Skyward weekly. Report cards can be found in Skyward every 9 weeks. Printed copies are available upon request.
Students attending classes at LHS or LHS Harmon must use the provided shuttle buses. Students are not allowed to drive between campuses during the school day.
1:X iPad If the iPad is not working properly, students may go to the library during block lunch to
have their problem addressed. iPads must be in a district-provided case at all times and only a district-provided charger
should be used to avoid damage to the device. The keyboard, case and charger supplied by the district are NOT covered by the
insurance program. If those items are damaged, lost or stolen, a fine will be charged to the student's Skyward account.
Students will be held responsible for repair or replacement costs if: the annual insurance fee has not been paid; the device is not in its case or an improper charger is used; the loss or damage is not reported within 5 school days; the damage is excessive enough to indicate intentional misuse; a co-pay is required to help cover repair/replacement costs on the second report of damage or loss. On the third report, the student is responsible for the entire cost to repair or replace.

If students are out a full day or miss only one class period, they are not allowed back into their missed class(es) without obtaining an admit slip from the attendance office.
If students are in line to receive an admit slip before the tardy bell rings, they will not be counted tardy to class.
Students are required to present an admit slip for all excused and unexcused absences. To excuse an absence, students must bring a parent, court, or doctor’s note. Students are limited to 4 parent-note absences per 9-week grading period. State policy now allows students to be counted present for any partial-day absence if
they return with medical or court documentation. Parent calls to the attendance office can substitute for a parent note. Multiple day or pre-planned family absences must be pre-approved by the principal to be
excused.
Students have one day for every day of excused absence to complete their missed assignments.
Parents may call the attendance office at 469-713-5987 to report an absence.What do I do if I need to leave school early or come in late?
Students are signed in and out through the front office. If students are arriving to school from an appointment, students will sign in and
then go to the attendance office to receive an admit to class. If students are leaving, their parent or a designated adult must sign them out. If students are feeling ill and want to go home, students are not allowed to use
their cell phone to call their parent. LISD requires all students who get sick during the day to go through the Nurse’s
Office. Students must bring medical or court notes for any appointments upon their return.
Is it true that I can make an “A” in a class and still be denied credit?
Yes. The state of Texas requires all students to be in attendance 90% of the time a class meets in order to receive credit for each course regardless of the grade earned.
Students may not be absent more than four days from any class. Exceptions to the four days will be allowed if students have an illness
documented with a doctor’s note, a note for a religious holiday recognized by LISD, inclement weather or death in the family.
Remember to watch absences closely on a period-by-period basis.What about dress code infractions?
Students should have already received a copy of the dress code. It is also available on our campus website lisd.net/lhskillough
Dress code is strictly enforced. Hair, jewelry, and makeup must conform to the district’s guidelines. On the first dress code violation, students are issued a warning. Students are
required to change into appropriate attire. The student will be allowed to make a phone call to obtain appropriate clothing. However, he or she is required to sit in the P.A.S.S. room until proper clothing has been delivered or until the end of the school day.
Subsequent infractions will result in an escalation of consequences.What will happen if I am tardy to school or to class?
Students are expected to be seated and ready to learn when the tardy bell rings. Students arriving late to class will be assigned the following consequences:
o 1-2: Warningo 3-6: Lunch detentiono 7-9: One week of Block Lunch PASS (ISS)o 10+: PASS (ISS) per tardy
Excuses such as “I overslept,” “I missed the bus,” or “We had car trouble,” do not constitute excused tardies.
What happens if I am put in P.A.S.S? Most Killough students will never be placed in the in-school suspension room
called P.A.S.S. However, those students who attend are denied certain privileges as a result of that placement.
When a student is in P.A.S.S., he or she will not attend regular classes. Missed class assignments are sent to students in the P.A.S.S. room.
Prior to beginning class work, students must copy the P.A.S.S. rules and complete packets that explain how to correct inappropriate behavior.
Students are given a restroom break in the morning and one in the afternoon. Students may bring a breakfast and/or lunch from home or purchase one from
the cafeteria. Students who are in P.A.S.S. may not take part in extra-curricular activities
during the days they are assigned to P.A.S.S.Public Display of Affection
Physical contact of an intimate or sexual nature is not appropriate in a school setting. Any public display of affection will not be allowed.
Goals of Killough Successful transition to High School for all students. Instill an honest work ethic, integrity, respect and academic excellence. Prepare students for academic success and college readiness.
Student IDs and Fines
It is MANDITORY for students to wear their student ID. The ID MUST be from the current year, and the student picture may not be defaced in any way. The students are provided an ID at the beginning of the year, and they will receive a new one once school pictures are made. Students get 5 FREE temporary (paper) IDs per 18 weeks. Students begin to be charged $1 for every temporary ID beyond 5. New ID badges (plastic) are available for $5 in the library. Students are required to clear all fines at the end of each nine-week grading period or lose block lunch.

¿Qué debo hacer cuando vuelva de una ausencia? Si usted pierde un día completo, o pierde un solo período de clase, no se le permite
volver a sus clase(s) que perdió, sin obtener un papel de admisión de la Oficina de Asistencia.
Si usted se encuentra en línea para recibir una admisión antes que la campana suena, no se contara tarde a clase.

Self-Carrying Medication at School
Did you know…
High school students may carry & self-administer over the counter medications (Tylenol, ibuprofen, Midol, cough drops, creams/ointments, eye drops, etc.) and some prescription medications (example - antibiotics) while at school?
What is required to do this?
It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to provide the medication for school.
Each medication will be in the original container labeled with the student's name.
The student will carry written permission from the parent or guardian to take the medication as well as instructions on how and when the medication should be taken.
STUDENTS WILL NOT SHARE MEDICATION WITH ANYONE.
Students may NOT carry or self-administer controlled substances.
Emergency Medications
Texas Legislature has passed laws that allow students to carry and self-administer emergency medications, including asthma inhalers and epinephrine pens, while at school or school related functions. In order to do so, the Emergency Medication Self-Carry Agreement form must be completed by the parent/guardian & medical provider and given to the school nurse.
All forms are good for one school year and must be re-submitted each year after.
Please stop by and speak with your school nurse for any further questions or concerns, and/or to pick up the appropriate form necessary for your student to have medication at school this year.

Information about SchedulesWe want all students to have the best possible schedules. Students will be able to view their current schedule in Skyward, on Friday, August 10th. Even though schedules are available for viewing, please be aware that there could still be changes. Students should check Skyward one the last time on Tuesday, August 14th, the night before the first day of school.
Check schedules closely and make sure:
You have something scheduled all four periods You don't have something you have taken before Are you going back and forth between Killough and LHS Main? This can
be very difficult and we want your day to go as smoothly as possible. If you don't want this, please contact your counselor.
If a schedule needs to be changed, students should contact their counselor via the Google link or QR code below. Follow the directions on the form.
A schedule change may be requested if the student:o Has not met the required prerequisiteo Wants to increase the rigor or coursework (change from regular to
PAP)o Is in the incorrect level of courseo Has already received credit for the course (attended summer
school, etc.)o Needs a sport or fine arts change (removal or addition with coach

In order for students to be in attendance for 90% of the class (the state's "90% rule"), the last day for changes will be 4 days into the new semester.

Information about Buses
Buses to Dale Jackson Career Center (DJCC) and Career Center (CCE) leave from LHS Main in the morning and will bring you back to Killough after class. The afternoon group is picked up from Killough at 12:20 and taken to DJ and CCE. There is transportation after school from these locations too.

Skyward InformationTo access a student's schedule in Skyward, go to https://www.lisd.net/Page/9363You will need to login to the family access and select schedule. Extra-Curricular Activities
Students often notice changes to their course requests related to extra-curricular activities. Counselors receive lists of eligible students after tryouts have taken place. If there are any questions about whether or not one of these courses should be added or removed from a schedule, please contact the coach or staff involved with that sport/activity with your questions. It is a good idea to "cc" the appropriate counselor so that any corrections can be made as soon as possible.

DRESS CODE QUICK REFERENCE 2019-2020
Dress Code guidelines are designed to enhance a positive environment at school. Outstanding performance is always related to high expectations. The LHS Dress Code is established to:
Promote a positive school atmosphere conducive to learning Encourage students to exemplify proper grooming in order to exhibit an appropriate image for the student, school,
district and community Enhance a safe, orderly educational environment Promote community values
1. Students’ hair shall not tend to create a distraction. Students’ hair must be kept out of their eyes. No shaved or sculpted designs are allowed in the hair or eyebrows.
2. Students’ contact lenses must be a natural color or shade. Distracting styles or color will not be allowed.3. Students may wear one small stud in the nose. Nose rings, tongue rings, eyebrow rings, spacers of any kind, and mouth jewelry
are not permitted. There should be no visible sign of body piercing or facial piercing. 4. Tattoos, regardless of size, must be covered. 5. Male students may wear either one small stud earring or one small loop earring in one or both ears. Female students may wear
appropriate earrings. Pins, spikes, etc. are not allowed. 6. Clothing, which in the opinion of the staff that would be deemed inappropriate, disruptive, or offensive for school in general, will
not be allowed. Some examples of inappropriate clothing include, but is not limited to: bike shorts, athletic shorts that are made of unlined thin material, cut-off shorts, boxer shorts, pants or shorts with printed text on the seat, gloves or forearm sleeves inside the building, see-through clothing, sleepwear as outerwear, halters, midriffs, fishnet tops, tank tops, pants not worn at the natural waist line, clothing that is ripped or torn, pants with holes on or above the knee. Excessively tight-fitting clothing and over-sized clothing may be deemed inappropriate for school.
7. Blankets, quilts, or wrap-around type coverings are not appropriate for school and should not be brought to school or classes.8. Pants must be of an appropriate length and worn at the natural waist. No undergarments should be visible, and absolutely no
sagging is allowed.9. Skirts or hemmed shorts may be worn if the length is appropriate (mid-thigh). If a garment has split sides, the top of the split must
be no higher than mid-thigh. “Nike” style running shorts are not allowed. Tights/leggings/jeggings may be worn with a dress or blouse of mid-thigh length.
10. Clothing that is considered or determined to be gang attire or clothing intended to incite others will not be allowed. 11. Female students should not wear clothing that reveals visible cleavage, waist, or midriff area.12. Male students may not wear sleeveless shirts or vests without a shirt with sleeves underneath. Female students may wear
sleeveless shirts so long as the straps are at least three fingers wide.13. All students shall wear appropriate undergarments. Undergarments should not be seen.14. Students may not wear clothing, jewelry or other items that advertise by name or symbol any products that are not permitted in
school, including but not limited to: drugs, alcohol, tobacco, profanity, and obscenities, suggestive slogans that promote/represent any of the previously listed, including Satanism, devil worship, gambling or violence. Any shirts that display either by word or graphic representation such elements as, but not limited to, the macabre, gothic symbolism, weaponry, or depictions of the human anatomy in any form are inappropriate. Pants or shorts should have no text on the seat of the garment.
15. No hats, caps, sweatbands, bandanas, sunglasses, clothing and accessories with spikes, headdress or hair grooming items shall be worn in the school building by either male or female students.
16. All students are required to wear hard-soled shoes. House shoes/slippers are unacceptable. 17. School affiliated uniforms are an appropriate form of dress for extra-curricular or athletic activities only.18. The principal, sponsor, coach or staff member in charge of an extra-curricular activity may regulate the dress and grooming of
students who participate in the activity.
Students in violation of this dress code will be given the opportunity to change their attire or be placed in PASS for the remainder of the school day. Repeated violations could result in and immediate placement in PASS or further disciplinary actions.
Administration reserves the right to determine any inappropriate attire or hairstyle that is disruptive or inappropriate for the school environment or
community.

ATTENDANCE, TRUANCY, AND TARDY POLICY QUICK REFERENCE 2019-2020
Attendance & Loss of Credit
State law dictates that a student must attend at least 90 percent of the days in which a class meets to receive credit. Both excused and unexcused absences count toward excessive absences. Students exceeding the 90 percent attendance rule during or at the end of a nine-week grading period will meet with an Attendance Committee of school staff to outline requirements to recover credit. Failure to meet the requirements will cause the student to be denied credit, regardless of the grade(s) earned in that class(es).
A student absent from school for any reason, other than for a documented health care appointment, will not be allowed to participate in school related activities on that day or evening.
A student cannot miss more than five (5) days per term or ten (10) days for the school year for school related activities and receive credit for a class(es).
When a student returns from an absence from school, he/she must bring a note that describes the reason for the absence and has an authentic parent signature.
A student absent without permission from school, any class, or a required tutorial will be considered truant and subject to disciplinary action, which may include court action.
Make-up work or tests will be permitted for all excused absences and absences for school-sponsored activities. For excused absences, not school related, students have one (1) day for make-up for each day of absence. Any exception to this will be made by the principal.
A parent withdrawing a student must present a signed and dated request to the registrar stating the reason, new school, or other educational option.
Truancy
A student is considered truant when he/she has three or more unexcused days or parts of days in a four-week period. This will activate LISD’s Truancy Prevention program.
On the 10th unexcused absence in a six-month period, truancy charges will be filed with Denton County Justice of the Peace after a student misses 10 days (or parts of days) of school.
Tardy Policy
Students are expected to be seated in class and prepared to work when the tardy bell rings. Students who are deemed tardy by their teachers must come to the Library for a tardy slip and will be assigned the following consequences:
1-2: warning 3-5: 40 minute lunch detention 6-8: week of block lunch PASS 9+: one day PASS/tardy

Asistencia

1. Todos los estudiantes deben estar limpios y bien arreglados.2. El pelo de los estudiantes, por la naturaleza del estilo o el color (respetando la regla del 25%), no tenderá a crear una distracción. El pelo
de los estudiantes debe mantenerse fuera de sus ojos. No se permiten diseños afeitados o esculpidos en el cabello ni en las cejas.3. Las lentes de contacto de los estudiantes deben ser de color natural o de sombra. Distracción de estilos o el color no se permitirá.4. Los estudiantes no pueden usar joyas faciales o decoración facial, aparte del maquillaje normal para las niñas. Los anillos de la lengua,
los anillos de la ceja, los espaciadores de cualquier clase, y la joyería de la boca no se permiten. No debe haber ningún signo visible de perforación corporal o piercing facial.
5. Los tatuajes, independientemente del tamaño, deben ser cubiertos.6. Los estudiantes varones pueden usar un pendiente pequeño o un pendiente pequeño en uno o ambos oídos. Las alumnas pueden usar

llevar camisas sin mangas siempre y cuando las correas tengan por lo menos tres dedos de ancho. 12. Todos los estudiantes deberán usar ropa interior apropiada. Ropa interior no debe ser visto.13. Los estudiantes no pueden usar ropa, joyas u otros artículos que anuncien por nombre o símbolo los productos que no están permitidos
en la escuela, incluyendo pero no limitado a: drogas, alcohol, tabaco, blasfemias y obscenidades, lemas sugestivos que promueven / representan Cualquiera de los enumerados anteriormente, incluyendo Satanismo, adoración del diablo, juegos de azar o violencia. Cualquier camisa que exhiba, ya sea por palabra o representación gráfica, elementos tales como, pero no limitado a, el macabro, simbolismo gótico, armamento o representaciones de la anatomía humana en cualquier forma son inapropiados. Los pantalones o pantalones cortos no deben tener texto en el asiento de la prenda.
14. No deben usar sombreros, gorros, bandas de sudor, pañuelos, gafas de sol, prendas de vestir y accesorios con clavos, tocados o artículos de aseo del cabello en el edificio de la escuela por estudiantes masculinos o femeninos.
15. Todos los estudiantes deben usar zapatos. Zapatos de casa / zapatillas son inaceptables. 16. El director, patrocinador, entrenador o miembro del personal encargado de una actividad extraescolar, puede regular el vestuario y la
preparación de los estudiantes que participan en la actividad.

Student Technology Policy:
Students are expected to use their personal technology appropriately at all times.
Use of technology in class is solely at the teacher’s discretion. No earbuds in in class without teacher permission. One earbud only during passing periods & lunch. If you do not have permission, your iPad, earbuds, and/or phone should be out of
sight in your pocket or bag.
1 st Offense : Teacher holds device until the end of the class period, completes a Skyward Classroom Referral and contacts parents.
2 nd Offense : Teacher fills out a Skyward Teacher Referral and brings the device to the office. Assistant Principal assigns a week of lunch detention and calls home.
3 rd Offense : Teacher fills out a Skyward Teacher Referral. Student is assigned a day of PASS and is prohibited from having the device on campus for the rest of the school year.
Refusal to give device to staff as directed will be considered insubordination and could result in further disciplinary action.
LISD iPads: Bring to school, charged, every day. Keep in district-provided case at all times. Use only the district-provided charger. Report damage or loss to the office within 5 school days. Tech support available during block lunch in the library.
