New Haven Promise

Annual scholarship which covers up to full tuition at public CT 2 or 4 year colleges or up to $2500 at private colleges.

Requirements:

Student must be a New Haven resident and attend a New Haven public school or approved charter school.

Student must have a positive disciplinary record (no expulsions).

Student must complete at least 40 hours of community service.

Student must have a 90% attendance record or better.

Student must have an earned 3.0 weighted GPA or better

Procedures: procedures for applications differ at each school but here is an overall guide:

Most local private high schools have application periods that start very early, around September of your 8th grade year. Applications are usually due during the first part of the school year, as well. Submit applications as early as possible to make sure it has enough time to be processed.

o Some schools want you to have an open application in order to shadow or interview at the school, and some schools encourage you to start this process as early as 7th grade.

o Some schools have additional admissions requirements, such as an admissions test.

Most schools also offer some form of financial aid, which students must apply for.

Application decisions are usually made early in the school year.

In the second half of the year, you might be asked to sign a contract with your intent to enroll in this school.

5. Am I required to fill all four choices for magnet schools on the magnet school application?No. Only apply to the school you wish to attend. Do not put down a school you are uninterested in attending just to fill all spots on the application. If you are only interested in attending one school then only apply to that one school.

6. If I have a sibling already in a magnet school, am I automatically accepted into that school?You are not automatically accepted to that school however you do receive sibling preference which improves your chances.

7. Once I submit an application, can I make changes?

Yes, you may make changes on your application up until the deadline. If you applied online then you may make changes online. If you submit a paper application then you will need to submit another paper application to make changes. The last application received before the deadline is the one which will be used.

8. Do I have to apply to my neighborhood school?Yes, you must pick an academy/ small learning community for your neighborhood school even if it is not one of choices.

9. Will my Powerschool and Navaince information follow me to my high school ?Yes, all the information from powerschool including test scores, grades, goals and career interests will follow you to the high school.

10. What is the best way for me to find out more about High Schools?

GLOSSARY

AP Course: AP stands for “Advanced Placement.” This is a college level course taught in high school.

Block: A class period lasting for 90 minutes

Required Courses -: Specific classes a student must take and pass to complete graduation requirements.

Elective Course: A non-required course that is chosen by a student based on his/her interests.

Extra-Curricular Activities: Activity programs which meet outside of the regular school day. Ex: clubs/organizations

GPA: Stands for “Grade Point Average.” Computer based on number of courses taken and grades earned in those courses.

Honors Course: Course designed to challenge highly motivated students.

Mastery Based Learning: Instead of traditional letter grades, students receive detailed reports about their progress on each learning target addressed in their classes.

Transcript: Official report of your grades, attendance, and GPA.

Internship: Working for a company paid/ unpaid to obtain job experience.
