YOUTH LEADERS of the VISAYAS

Greetings!

It is my great honor and pleasure as President of United Nation Youth Association of the Philippines (UNYAP) Silliman University Youth Sector, to invite you, my fellow youth leaders, in this National MDG Summit for Young Filipino Leaders (Visayas) with its theme, "B.I.L.I.B Young Leaders: Stand Up, Move, Lead."

Being a youth leader is not all about work and pressure, but it is also about sharing your talents and abilities to inspire other people especially youth to stand up, move, and lead.

I would like to quote our national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal, "The youth is the hope of our nation". Indeed we are the future of our nation, but the question is, “How can we be the future of our nation if we ourselves are not doing anything to help our nation?”

This summit of young leaders hopes not only to develop the leadership skills of young leaders but also to inspire the youth on the importance of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG).

A lot of people think that changing the world is a difficult job, one that entails a lot of power, a lot of money or both. However the ability to make a difference is actually on our hands. It doesn’t take much and it can even be fun.

I am hoping that through this summit, we can inspire the youth and help the United Nation achieve the MDG. As I end this letter, I would like to leave you this quote from former U.S President John F. Kennedy to ponder “As not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

WELCOME AND GOD BLESS.

Mabuhay ang Kabataang Pilipino!

(S.Y.F.L) 2007 Theme: “B.I.L.I.B. YOUNG leaders: STAND UP, MOVE, LEAD!”

*The Summit For Young Filipino Leader’s (SYFL) theme was inspired by the IYD international theme “Be Seen. Be Heard.” The event is a follow-up action program from the International Youth Day held last August 10-12, 2007 in Manila City, Philippines.

BACKGROUND/RATIONALE

The National MDG Summit for Young Filipino Leaders (SYFL) came to rise after the celebration of International Youth Day commenced after the United Nations General Assembly. This summit serves to promote youth participation and address issues concerning them and encourage their involvement in the achievement of programs for sustainable development and technological innovations. Hence, an international strategy was adopted –the World Program of Action for Youth (WPAY) to the Year 2000 and Beyond – to address more effectively the problems of young men and women and to increase opportunities for their participation in the society.

The summit covers various issues concerning youth and the Millennium Development Goals. The community immersion activities bring delegates in touch with the reality of poverty and other deprivations, and keep them aware of, and possibly inspired by the coping capabilities of residents in the mission areas. Meanwhile, fellowships and cultural nights are usually held before the conclusion of the celebration. Overall, the SYFL events bring to fore the lively element of youth, a common spirit of concern for others and a desire to participate in addressing the problems confronting society.

The concept and design of the SYFL celebration are substantive consequences of the different MDG initiatives from various sectors, and the SYFL theme “B.I.L.I.B. YOUNG leaders: STAND UP, MOVE, LEAD!” Aside from generating greater and continuing youth participation in the achievement of the MDG’s by 2015 this year’s SYFL will once again highlight the need for productive partnerships as a way of effectively tackling the concerns presented in the Millennium Summit of 2000.

XI. F.A.Q. (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)

1.) What do I get from joining this Summit? Make a difference in the community with all the leadership skills and techniques acquired from

the experience and the potential of becoming a strong and effective leader in the future. Meet new friends and acquaintances form all over the secondary and tertiary schools in the

Visayas. Get to know and hear leadership insights from the prominent people of our country. Enjoy the facilitators and fellow participant’s company Acquire the important knowledge about the Millennium Development Goal (MDG). Obtain with you a seminar kit containing necessary things needed for the summit (I.D., notes

and Speech Reference, SYFL manual, readings, etc.)

2.) How much will I be paying and is it worth it? The amount to be paid for the summit is reasonably affordable. One needs to pay only P

2,500.00 for non Dumaguete delegates and P 1,000.00 for Dumaguete delegates. To help the organizers with the cost during the summit, the registration fee will be used to pay for the accommodation (non Dumagute delegates), purchased materials for the conference kits, the certificates, and some supplies and as funds for contingency.

Meals including the breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are free, with great thanks to our sponsors.

Bringing nothing and taking something home with all the good experiences and newly acquired leadership skills, isn’t that more than enough?

3.) What is so important about it?

We have realized that the activities being organized for advocacy, wellness, and information dissemination, has been well done and yet such have only been exposing less than 5% of the target population, who are the students. The organization then concluded that in order to reach as many students as possible, it would be helpful to train potential student leaders of the respective schools who will then organize separate activities with the same mission and goal as ours. After all, according to Dr. Francis Kong C.E.O. of Company B during the International

Youth Day Conference “Leaders are not suppose to produce more followers and members, instead they are to produce more good leaders”

With the statement therefore we come to share leadership in the name of excellence! This summit would also help the United Nation spread the importance of MDG and the role of

the youth in achieving this goal.

4.) I am not a leader, can I join? Of course, anyone can! Leaders are not born rather they are made and molded to become one. Any student who is not a graduating senior can still join. This is necessary so that the delegates

can still have time to come up with activities in their respective schools after the summit.

5.) Will I be a leader after? Every delegate who participated well in lectures, workshop, and other SYFL activities would

acquire new skills and techniques that may possibly mold him/her to become a better person and a promising leader

6.) What do I need to bring? Each delegate should bring formal, semi-formal attire for our conferences. Each delegate

should bring one filipiniana or barong for our cultural night. Also the delegates should also bring casual attire for the immersion.

One might want to bring gadgets such as a camera so that you will have some catched memories after the event. A good tape recorder and a portable flash dish, is advisable if you’re into documenting every speech.

SYFL ID’s pencils/pens. Papers, worksheets, and things needed for the summit will be provided in the conference as part of the workshop kits.

7.) What do I need to know before joining? One must have the interest and purpose to join. Basic knowledge on Millennium Development

Goal (MDG), leadership and advocacy is necessary for one to relate more to the discussions and workshop to be attended during the summit.
