The following is a system for dissecting images in order to receive deeper meaning.
Apply these to the images from Chapters 1-4 in order to write brief analytic statements on the back of this sheet.
Contributing Factors:
I. Two-dimensionality -
A. What is the arrangement of the foreground and background?
B. How is the frame used?
C. What perspective is the image presented from? Even, below, or above?
II. Balance -
A. Does empty space or the image dominate the space?
B. Is the primary figure symmetrical or asymmetrical?
C. Are there differences in scale between components?
III. Lines -
A. How would you characterize the weight or heaviness of the artist’s lines?
B. Do the lines give the image a feeling of texture?
C. Are there lines that imply movement?
