Department Activities 2014-15 June 5th was celebrated as World Environment Day. Students of the department along with faculty members, sowed seeds of flowering plants. On JUNE 5th the movie 'Born Free' was screened for our students. The movie focuses on environmental issues like preservation and protection of the Wildlife. As part of the fundraising campaign, our students raised a substantial amount in cash, for dialysis patients at Aluva Government hospital.

Department Activities 2014-15

June 5th was celebrated as World Environment Day. Students of the department along with faculty members, sowed seeds of flowering plants.

On JUNE 5th the movie 'Born Free' was screened for our students. The movie focuses on environmental issues like preservation and protection of the Wildlife. As part of the fundraising campaign, our students raised a substantial amount in cash, for dialysis patients at Aluva Government hospital.

June 19th was celebrated as world Reading day. The day was celebrated by inaugurating the reading room .Book talks were given by both students and faculty members.

On June 20th, students of the department organized a food fest in the college as part of the fundraising campaign. Students came with homemade Hors d'oeuvres and other treats.

On July 7th The Department of English conducted a one day intercollegiate seminar on Advanced Linguistics. Ms.Neetu Sunny was our resource person.

JULY 8th was celebrated as World Writers Day. The Department of English in collaboration with the Writers & Readers club of the college, organized various competitions to stimulate creative instincts. Competitions included translations, as well as poetry and short story writing based on the visuals shown to the students.

On JUL 9th, A workshop was conducted by the Department of English on "Radio- the style and language''. The session was handled by the young and vibrant Radio Jockey, Mathukutty of RedFM. Around 40 students of the second and third Communicative English attended the workshop.

On 10th JULY, a one day intercollegiate seminar on "Introduction to Cinema" was organised by the Department of English. Tharun Bhaskaran(photographer and Cinematographer), a faculty of WIFT film institute, Kochi was the resource person. A total of 120 students from over 5 colleges participated in this seminar. The Oscar winning Movie ''Artist'' was screened for the students.

Reshma Rajeev, a third communicative student of our department was the recipient of the prestigious Bharatiya Kala Samathi 2014 awards(BKS awards).She was selected as the YUVA PRATHIBHA in Bharathanatyam

A Life orientation class for our students was organized by the department.  Retired Lecturer Dr. Annie Chacko spoke to our students on the importance of faith and how to achieve goals.

In collaboration with Kerala action force, students of the English Department raised funds for the construction of houses. Our Students handed over the key of the newly constructed house to Mrs. Manohar, a widow at Choondi.

The Department of English paid homage to the late Dr. U.R Ananthamurthy on Aug26th.Dr Fathima Cross, the chief guest of the day spoke about U.R Ananthamurthy’s contributions in the literary as well as academic field.

Xav Virtuoso 2014, an inter collegiate cultural fest by the IIIrd Communicative English students included the participation of students from all over the state on the 28th and 29th of august. Various events like dance, music, fashion show, marketing and many more were held. The event was inaugurated by the youth icon Unni Mukundan and Honey Rose. The main attraction of the event was the musical performance by the band Fusion Temptation .

The Department of English, St. Xavier’s College for Women, Aluva hosted a UGC sponsored National Seminar on Media and Culture: Creations and Transcreations on 24th and 25th of September 2014.The event was inaugurated by Johny Lukose, News Director of Manorama News. Dr. Sebastian Paul, former Member of Parliament and of Press Council delivered the Key-note address.

The English Association was inaugurated by Dr. Janaki Sreedharan on 12-12-14.She also spoke on the subject Dalit literature.

The Postgraduate and Research Department of English, St.Joseph’s College, Irinjalakuda conducted an intercollegiate literature quiz Sagesse Lit on 11-12-2014.Ms.Arya.s.Nair of the IIIrd Literature and Ms.Aswathy Balagopal of the IInd MA English literature bagged the third prize.

The state award winning Tourism club of the college in association with the Department of English conducted a field trip to actor Sreenivasan’s organic farm at Kandanadu on the 15th of dec.

Red FM, Federal Bank and The Department of English in association with the NSS unit of the college organised a Hair for care campaign in the college campus. The goal of the campaign was to collect hair from the students in order to support cancer patients. More than 25 students contributed their hair for this noble cause.

On January 16th 2015 the third year English literature students hosted a mega literary and cultural fest INFIGO 2015.The fest was inaugurated by the renowned film actor, and anchor of D4 dance in Mazhavil manorama, Govind Padmasoorya.

The Library and the English department together celebrated the library week from 27 th Jan to 3oth Jan 2015. Various competitions were held as a part of Library Week Celebrations. Spelling bee competition was conducted. Kristine Susan George and Pearl Augustine won the first and the second prizes. Arya s Nair and Midhuna Ann Mathews won the first prize for quiz followed by Surya C. S and Evelyn. Street play was conducted and the Department of English won the Paravoor George Memorial Ever rolling Trophy.

Project REFORM- The teachers of the Department of English gave classes in basic grammar and spoken English to students who belonged to the socially and educationally backward class.(no pic)

The third communicative students of the department were given training on how to face interviews and on career options by a trainer from CL Educate Limited.
