Ben Milam Elementary Our mission is to nurture and prepare every child for a lifetime of success.

Teacher Development

Dallas Teacher Residency (DTR) - Teachers mentor student teachers for one full year. We have hired teachers from this teacher preparation program.

The Teaching Trust Leadership Teams Program- Ben Milam was selected to participate for the 2017-2018 school year. This will strengthen current campus professional learning communities (PLCs).

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - Dallas ISD Phase 1 Campus- Teachers will receive training on SEL components to use in the classroom.

School Programs

Pre-K program, free and tuition based program ($525/month) Two-way dual language immersion- Students take classes in English and Spanish. The dual language program

provides opportunity for the students who continue the program through high school to graduate with a Seal of Bi-literacy on their diplomas.

Talented and Gifted- TAG Clay Student Leadership Program- Engages students through music, journaling, and mentorship to instill leadership

values; promotes family team building seminars to build parent/child/school engagement Mindfulness Classes for 2nd and 3rd Grade (Social Emotional Learning- SEL) After-school enrichment provided by St. Simon After School Program

Accountability

State rating - Met Standards Distinctions- Reading and Closing the Achievement Gap 97.7 percent attendance rate 90% of students earned kindergarten ready scores 78% of Kinder – 2nd grade students scored at or above the 40th percentile on TerraNova Reading. (Dallas ISD – 66%) 72% of Kinder – 2nd grade students scored at or above the 40th percentile on TerraNova Math. (Dallas ISD – 57%) 83% of Kinder – 2nd grade students scored at or above the 40th percentile on Supera Reading. (Dallas ISD – 73%) Student Success Initiative - 93% of our 5th grade students met state expectations for Reading and Math on the

STAAR exam.

Parent Involvement

PTO and SBDM Parent Leadership Opportunities On –campus parent development classes provided by Momentous Institute (English and Spanish) 100 percent of parents are satisfied with the school’s direction 100 percent of parents feel the school environment is a safe, well maintained, clean place where respect is

practiced

Community Partners

Church of the Incarnation- They volunteer as Reading Buddies. Trinity Church- Volunteers implement the Clay Student Leadership Program in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes. SMU Work Study Program- SMU students work in our classrooms tutoring students and they provide homework

help in the afterschool program. The Mansion on Turtle Creek- They partnered with Ben Milam to sponsor a Read-a-thon for Room to Read. The Old Monk- They provide funds for student and teacher supplies and incentives. The Crescent- They provide gifts for students during the holidays. Origin Bank- Junior Achievement Partner- They teach the Junior Achievement curriculum in all classes. Individual community members serve as reading buddies to students at all grade levels.

Key Actions for 2017 – 2018

Key Action 1: Implement high quality, research-based instructional strategies in each classroom. Key Action 2: Increase student achievement in all core academic areas at each grade level. Key Action 3: Improve campus culture, climate and safety for students, parents, teachers and staff. Key Action 4: Increase parent involvement opportunities and community partnerships.
