OUR PROGRAM

OUR MISSION

The mission of Fillmore Christian Academy (FCA) is to provide an exceptional academic education and Biblically-based spiritual training of the next generation of Christian leaders in order to equip them for a life of service to their Savior in their homes, churches, vocations, and communities.

PHILOSOPHY AND COMMITMENT OF OUR SCHOOL

Fillmore Christian Academy seeks to provide its students with an exemplary academic education while at the same time promoting the spiritual and social development of each student. Our educational program is not fashioned after the principles of this world but after Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col. 2:8). We believe that in order to offer a truly Christian education we must keep Christ and His Word as the foundation for all that we teach. We believe that all truth is God’s truth and that the Bible is the source wherein we find this truth. No subject can be taught to its fullest if God, the Creator, is ignored or denied. Our teachers do not seek to merely impart knowledge but to mentor and disciple each student according to the Word of God. Knowledge alone can puff up and result in pride and arrogance (1 Cor. 8:1) but the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Prov. 9:10).

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Our administrative and teaching staffs are united in the common goal of helping each student fulfill their academic potential. Our program is based upon meaningful experiences in every subject with primary emphasis given to fundamentals. Fundamentals being the ability to read intelligently, compute accurately, write legibly and spell correctly.

AMERICANISM

Americanism is the art of being loyal to the United States and appreciative of the great heritage we have in the tradition and culture of this land. FCA believes in helping our students develop a real love of their country based upon an appreciation of our American heritage and the Christian principles upon which our country was founded. Regard for the democratic principles in word and action are expected.

1

ACSI AFFILIATION

Fillmore Christian Academy is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International, the largest of all Christian School Associations. The ACSI promotes the cause of Christian education, protects the freedoms of Christian schools, and strengthens schools through its many services. The ACSI hosts workshops and teacher conventions to provide training for school personnel. It provides publications that help teachers improve professionally, and sponsors forums for discussion and research.

NON-DISCRIMINATORY POLICY

Fillmore Christian Academy admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, athletic and other school-administered programs.

STATEMENT OF FAITHWe believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God (2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Ps. 19:7-9)

We believe in One God, the eternal, infinite, all-knowing, all-present, all-powerful Spirit in Whom all things have their source, support, and end (Deut 6:4; John 4:24; Gen 1:1, Ps 139; Rom 11:36). Within this One God three distinct persons exist—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—united, equal, and perfect in all attributes (Matt 28:19; Acts 10:38; 2 Cor 13:14). The Godhead is One in essence, but within this perfect unity and equality exists order in function—first Father, then the Son, and then the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 11:3; John 17:3-4; John 15:26; John 16:7).

We believe in the deity of Christ (John 10:33); His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:35); His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15; 7:26); His miracles (John 2:11); His vicarious and atoning death (1 Corinthians 15:3; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 2:9); His resurrection (John 11:25; 1 Corinthians 15:4); His ascension to the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19); His personal return in power and glory (Acts 1:11; Revelation 19:11).

We believe in the absolute necessity of regeneration by the Holy Spirit for salvation because of the exceeding sinfulness of human nature; and that men are justified on the single ground of faith in the shed blood of Christ and that only by God's grace and through faith alone we are saved (John 3:16-19; 5:24; Romans 3:23; 5:8-9; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5).

We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation (John 5:28-29).

2

We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13; Galatians 3:26-28).

We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life (Romans 8:13-14; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19-20; Ephesians 4:30; 5:18).

We believe that all human life is sacred and created by God in His image. Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death. We are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all human life. (Ps. 139)

We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God. (Gen. 1:26-27) Rejection of one’s biological sex is a rejection of God’s design and the person He created them to be.

We believe that the term “marriage” has only one meaning: The uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture. (Gen. 2:18-25) We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and woman who are married to each other and that any other sexual activity outside of this is sexually immoral and is sinful and offensive to God. (1 Cor. 6:18; 7:2-5; Heb. 13:4; Rom. 1:24-27; 1 Thess. 4:3)

We believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. (Acts 3:19-21; Rom. 10:9-10; 1 Cor. 6:9-11)

We believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity. (Mark 12:28-31; Luke 6:31) Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with Scripture nor the doctrines of Fillmore Christian Academy.

The statement of faith does not exhaust the extent of our beliefs. The Bible itself, as the inspired and infallible Word of God that speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality, and the proper conduct of mankind, is the sole and final source of all that we believe. For purposes of Fillmore Christian Academy’s faith, doctrine, practice, policy, and discipline, our board of directors is Fillmore Christian Academy’s final interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application.

SCHOOL POLICIESSCHOOL HOURS

Kindergarten 8:00 - 12:00 p.m.First through Fifth 8:00 - 2:45 p.m.

Recess and lunch times will vary according to classes.

**Children may not be dropped off earlier than 15 minutes before class begins and must be picked up no later than fifteen minutes after classes dismiss.

**Please be considerate of the teachers’ time and do not expect them to be babysitters after school hours. They have schoolwork to correct, lessons to prepare and appointments to keep. If picking up your child late becomes a habit, then there will be a charge instituted at the rate of $5.00 every 15 minutes. We understand that emergencies arise, however, habitual lateness will not be tolerated.

ADMISSION/REGISTRATION

Admission to FCA is based on a clear understanding between the school and the parents of the purposes and policies of FCA. It is impossible for a positive learning environment to exist unless the parents and school share common goals.

Although FCA does not require any particular church membership, parents are asked to carefully evaluate the doctrinal statement of the school to see if they are willing to support the spiritual teaching that occurs at FCA. Students must read the information in the FCA Handbook and Application and agree to abide by the guidelines and regulations as stated.

Attendance at FCA is a privilege that is available to students who desire a Christian education and who are willing to work for academic excellence. The administration reserves the right to deny admission or to dismiss students who do not conform to the goals of the school either in actions or attitudes. The school also reserves the right to place a student in the class that the school determines is best suited for the students’ needs. Each student is accepted on a nine-week probationary basis, and the school reserves the right to dismiss the student any time during probation should it be deemed necessary.

4

Kindergarten children must be five and first graders must be six by September l.

The admission process is as follows:

1. Complete the application and submit it to the school office along with a non-refundable application fee. An interview by the administrator or a school board member may be required.

2. Once accepted for attendance at FCA registration forms must be completed and signed and applicable fees must be paid.

3. Students must submit a copy of their previous school transcript, a copy of their most recent report card, an immunization form, an emergency form and a school application.

Late enrollment: Any student entering while the school year is in progress will be required to pay all applicable fees at the time of registration along with the first month's tuition payment. All of these fees are non-refundable.

Withdrawal: All charges related to the pupil's enrollment are to be paid as of the date of early withdrawal. Tuition is expected to be paid in full through the month of withdrawal, even if the student only attends for part of that month.

IMMUNIZATION/FIRST GRADE EXAM

The State of California requires proof of immunization prior to school entry . Fillmore Christian Academy works to comply with this legislation. Also, all students entering first grade are required by State law to have had a thorough physical examination within 18 months prior to entering first grade; the date of this exam must be supplied to the Academy before admittance to first grade. Your compliance in a timely manner is essential.

EMERGENCY FORM INFORMATION

Each student must have an emergency form on file with the school. The express purpose of this form is to guarantee emergency medical treatment for your child should such an occurrence happen at school or on a school-sponsored activity. Since the Academy accepts responsibility for your child, it requires the authority to obtain emergency medical treatment while the child is in our care.

In case of emergency all reasonable attempts will be made to contact the parent(s) and indicate to which hospital the child has been taken.

5

Children MAY NOT ATTEND classes at Fillmore Christian Academy until the emergency form is completed and on file with the Academy. Please do not overlook the importance of this form.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND TEXTBOOKS

Students will be given a letter listing needed supplies such as paper, pencils, erasers, ruler, etc. Additional supplies may be required from time to time during the school year. The book fee paid at the beginning of the year covers all consumable books required for your child’s grade. Lost books must be paid for before new books can be purchased.

ATTENDANCE AND HEALTHEXCUSED ABSENCES

Regular attendance is essential for continuity of learning. Consequently, the only excused absences are those involving the student’s illness or family emergencies; all other absences are considered anticipated absences. A phone call is required the morning of the absence to inform the teacher, and a written excuse from the parent must be provided the day following the absence when the student returns to class (State of California Education Code). The excuse note must include the specific reason for the absence.

ANTICIPATED ABSENCES

Anticipated absences are those which are known before the actual absence; in other words, plans are made to be absent. The regular make-up policy for excused absences DOES NOT APPLY to anticipated absence. For anticipated absences, it is the student and/or parent’s responsibility to contact teachers in advance, informing them of the anticipated absence, and asking for assignments which may be missed during absence. Each teacher should have at least one week’s notice in order to prepare the homework package. If the teacher is able to prepare a package of class work and homework that will be missed, this work must be completed and turned in upon return to class. If the teacher’s planning does not cover all of the anticipated days of absence, the remainder of the missed work will be assigned upon return to school and will be due according to the requirements of each individual teacher. Some work will not be able to be made up and in some instances a grade of zero will be given.

EXCESSIVE ABSENCES

6

Excessive absences (15% of the total number of school days for that semester) may require appropriate disciplinary action, loss of credit for that semester, and may ultimately result in termination of the student’s enrollment.

ILLNESS

If a child has been diagnosed as having a contagious disease, (chicken pox, strep, etc.), kindly notify the school so that precautions may be taken. If your child is not well prior to the beginning of the school day, you are requested to keep the child home. A student should not attend class if any of these symptoms are present:

1. A fever within the last 24 hours.2. 2. A runny nose that is not clear mucus (i.e. green or yellow)3. A frequent cough4. A contagious rash

If there are any symptoms of any communicable disease the child should remain home until the doctor indicates there is no longer threat of passing the disease to other children.

MEDICATION

In order to provide a safe and healthy environment and in order to keep up-to-date with recent changes in recommendations of the California Department of Education regarding the administration of medication, FCA has adopted the following medication policy.

It is preferable for medication times to be arranged during the out-of-school hours if possible. However, it is understood that some medications must be prescribed for administration during regular school hours.

All routine prescription medication (a routine medication is one that is to be given throughout the school year) will require a Medication Request form to be on file in the office. This form must be filled out and signed by your child’s physician. Requests for administering required medication at school must be updated annually or more frequently if there is a change in the medication, dosage, or time schedule.

Medications prescribed for short courses of therapy, such as antibiotics, will require the parent or guardians signature on a Student Medication Record. This record will be available in the office at the time the medication is brought in by the parent or guardian. This written consent, along with the pharmacy-labeled container, is sufficient for these medications.

Parents or guardians must provide all medication. Prescription drugs must be provided in a pharmacy-labeled container and include the following information: Students full name, physicians name, name of medication, dosage, and date of expiration of prescription. Parents or

7

guardians should deliver the medication personally or send it with a designated adult. All medications will be kept in a locked cabinet in the school office.

For your child’s safety, medications, including Tylenol and Advil, will not be dispensed by school personnel unless a dosage has been specified and authorized by a parent or guardian on the Special Permission Form provided in the registration packet. MEDICATIONS ARE NOT TO BE CARRIED BY STUDENTS ON CAMPUS AT ANY TIME. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN SUSPENSION. There are two exceptions to this rule and they are as follows: Students who need emergency medication such as asthma inhalers or severe allergic reaction kits will be allowed to self- administer these medications, provided they are adequately instructed at home and the student is capable, in the written opinion of the parent or guardian, toassume that responsibility. Over-the-counter cough drops may also be carried by students.

TARDINESS

It is very important for students to be on time to school. Self-discipline in this area is important, not only for academic reasons, but is essential for development of good habits which will promote success in future endeavors. Tardiness will be noted by the teacher and if it occurs frequently will be cause for review by the Board. Section 48260 of the California Education Code defines three unexcused tardies to school as truancy.

LUNCHES

We encourage nutritional lunches. Please observe the rules of good nutrition when fixing your child’s lunch. Sugary snacks for the recess break are NOT acceptable at FCA. No sharing of food between students will be allowed. Each student should only eat their own snacks and lunches.

All food must be eaten within the eating area. Students are to obey all rules as given by the supervisor. Students are to keep the eating area neat and clean.

STEWARDSHIP

Students should make every effort not to waste any resources (water, cups, paper, electricity, etc.).

LOST AND FOUND

Items that are lost during the school year are kept in a storage area in the FCA office. These are displayed at various student functions and students are asked to look for their lost items. FCA donates unclaimed articles every quarter to a local ministry that supplies clothes to the needy. Small items or valuable articles are kept in the school office until claimed.

SCHOOL STANDARDS

It is the desire of Fillmore Christian Academy to provide an educational atmosphere that is honoring to the Lord. We are mindful that all of our speech and behavior is a reflection of our Christian testimony. In keeping with this, we view discipline as an opportunity to build character and shape a child's life. (Proverbs 22:6). Parental support of our standards along with consistent discipline at home is essential for success in the classroom.

Students are expected at all times to:

(1) Honor God in speech and conduct.(2) Obey and show respect to school staff.(3) Use school property carefully and wisely.(4) Respect one another.

Specific rules of classroom conduct are further explained under Student Guidelines, and by individual teachers.

PHILOSOPHY OF DISCIPLINE

We, at Fillmore Christian Academy, believe that the full meaning and purpose of discipline should be not only to correct behavior, but also to build up, encourage and train a child in concepts as well as behavior that is pleasing to God. God admonishes us that reproof and correction are to be administered in love and with a measure of grace and compassion. Discipline must never be administered vindictively, in anger or devoid of forgiveness, or in any manner that is demeaning to the worth of the individual. Discipline is designed by God for the purpose of building character and shaping behavior, with its ultimate goal being to teach Christlikeness. Neither academic nor moral training can occur effectively in an environment without discipline. All external discipline is designed to lead toward and encourage self-discipline on the part of the student.

Discipline at FCA will be timely, done in love, restorative, consistent, and corrective. The reason for discipline will be clearly explained to the student. Repentance will be encouraged and the opportunity for expressing this resolve will be provided.

The type and severity of the discipline will be related to the seriousness of the problem and to the student's previous discipline record, but will never include corporal punishment.

9

A child’s first encounter with authority is in the home and FCA firmly believes that the basic responsibility for discipline resides with the home. Therefore, parents will be informed when unusual circumstances arise which call for disciplinary action. It is vitally important for parents to follow through in a Godly fashion should this occur. If parents are not supportive of our actions, we cease to work together as a team and the student will reap little of lasting value. Should the parents and the administration reach an impasse regarding disciplinary philosophy and procedures, the student may be dismissed from school since the basis for all future discipline and learning will be jeopardized.

STUDENT GUIDELINES

Students will be expected to exhibit good manners and common courtesy at all times with regard to teachers and fellow students. Below is a list of guidelines which is not all-inclusive. Each student will receive a complete list of General Rules. Each family is required to read over the General Rules with their child, and the parents and the child are to sign and return the bottom portion to the school. All students must:

1. Answer all adults respectfully and address their teachers and other school personnel by Mr., Mrs. or Miss.

2. Listen when others are speaking and raise their hand to get permission to speak.

3. Not become loud or boisterous in class, even when talking is permitted.

4. Refrain from distracting behavior and be considerate of those around them who are also trying to learn.

5. Not cheat, lie or steal. Students are not only expected to adhere to this policy, but also to encourage their fellow students to comply as well. Students who know of serious violations of Biblical or school standards are expected to assist the administration and faculty in order to maintain a Christian environment and uphold Biblical principles.

6. Never tease, name-call, fight, push, shove, threaten, intimidate or harass others.

7. Demonstrate honesty, fair play and sportsmanlike conduct.

8. Exhibit responsibility by coming to class on time prepared with all materials and necessary supplies.

9. Help keep the classroom clean by picking up paper and debris from the floor and from the desk before class dismissal. Students are expected to help maintain desks and all classroom materials and equipment.

10

10. Not be in the classroom without supervision.

11. Show respect for the rights and property of others. Parents or guardians shall be held liable for all damage to property caused by the student.

12. Not participate in “cliques” or in any negative behavior that involves the exclusion of other students.

13. Not run or be noisy inside the classrooms or restrooms.

14. Watch out for and be a good example to younger students.

15. Never use profane or vulgar language.

16. Never throw anything at another student (i.e. dirt, rocks, etc.).

17. Never engage in a physical demonstration of affection on campus or at any school-related function.

18. Must have permission to leave a classroom or instructional area.

19. Recognize and respect the teacher’s desk, file cabinet and personal items are “off-limits” to them.

20. Not bring toys or other personal items, including electronic devices, to school unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher. Cell phones are not to be used by students during school hours

DISCIPLINARY STEPS OVERVIEW

When a student chooses to behave in an inappropriate manner, disciplinary actions will be carried out in a process which is fair, yet firm. The attitude displayed by the student during the discipline process plays a key role in the decision of how the student should be disciplined. While our goal is to be corrective, instructive and forgiving during this process, the student may choose any one of a number of responses spanning from repentance to defiance. Therefore, the discipline process can follow a variety of options.

The following are the steps of discipline that are used in dealing with students:

STEP 1: Behavioral problems in class will first be handled privately between the teacher and student. The teacher will explain what is expected in class and what needs to

11

change in his/her behavior.

STEP 2: If the behavior persists, the child is sent to the Administrator’s office. At this time, a Parent Notification/Accountability Form or a Disciplinary Notice will be sent home. This will notify the parents of a specific behavior or incident that the parents need to be informed of and work on with their child

STEP 3: If the student is sent to the Administrator’s office three times other disciplinary measures may be taken at the discretion of the Administrator up to and including expulsion.

FORMS OF DISCIPLINE

Within the above disciplinary steps, any of the following forms of discipline may be incorporated. This list is not exhaustive.

a. Positive encouragement.b. Seat changing.c. Prayer with student regarding infraction.d. Self-government page.e. Writing of standards, rules, essays, dictionary pages, etc.f. Classroom isolation.g. Clean-up of school grounds/building.

h. Zero grade given for cheating.I. Academic or disciplinary probation.j. Extra assignments.k. Conferences as deemed necessary by the Board.l. Loss of various privileges.m. Disciplinary Notice.n. Counseling recommended.

SUSPENSION AND EXPULSION

Cause for IMMEDIATE suspension or expulsion from the Academy is any overt act which in the eyes of the teacher places any student or teacher in danger or places the school in a position of disrepute. Additionally, a suspension may be the result of a student exhausting the various consequences for accumulated inappropriate behavior. Suspension is for a minimum of one and a maximum of five consecutive days. The reasons and requirements of the suspension will be given in writing to the student and parents.

Serious discipline problems that may result in suspension or expulsion from school

12

are:a. Fighting or continual badgering or bullying of others.b. Boys entering girls’ restrooms or girls entering boys’ restrooms, or improper/

unacceptable displays of affection between students.c. Taking money or possessions from another pupild. Tearing or damaging another person’s property. (Parents will be responsible to seek

financial retribution from the offending student’s parents. The school cannot force payment for damages but will provide needed information for the parents.)

e. Obscene language.f. Insolence or disobedience to any teacher or any other adult while at school.g. Use, possession or sale of illegal drugs.h. Throwing rocks or other hard objects anywhere on the campus at any time (serious

injury to others could result.)i. Damaging church property. (Repair or replacement costs must be rendered by the

parents/guardians.)j. Repeated minor infractions, although not major in themselves as a single incident,

will most likely result in a suspension or expulsion.k. Frequently being found in off-limit or unsupervised areas.l. Possession or use of a weapon.

DRESS CODE

The Bible commands the Christian to do "all to the glory of God" (1st Cor. 10:31) and this applies to the area of student attire. We are witnesses for God by how we speak, act and dress. FCA strives to make education our primary focus. We know that clothes can be a diversion from that process. Therefore, we have structured our dress code to hopefully keep the clothes our students wear from becoming an issue. It is from this reasoning that we request the following requirements in dress:

Uniforms are required, the options in selection of color and style are listed on information sheets available from FCA. Uniforms may be purchased from the uniform section of department or clothing stores. More specific guidelines are as follows:

Shirts

All shirts must be collared polo shirts, free of decorative piping, zippers, and logos (with the exception of FCA’s logo). The polo shirt colors that are allowed are burgundy, white, navy and light blue. No other colors are acceptable. White oxford shirts are also acceptable.

FCA polo shirts must also be purchased for all grades and are purchased through FCA. These will be used on field trips and assigned days during the school year, but may also be worn on

13

regular school days.

Outerwear

All outerwear must be solid white, burgundy, khaki, light blue or navy blue and must be free of lettering, pictures, characters or logos except for the FCA logo. Navy blue and burgundy sweatshirts and jackets with the FCA logo may be purchased through the FCA office once a year. On really cold days when more than a sweatshirt or sweater are required, any jacket that is free of unacceptable lettering or pictures is acceptable.

Uniform Bottoms (pants, Capri pants, shorts)

The appropriate colors for pants, shorts and Capri pants are khaki and navy blue. Pants and shorts must be “uniform style.” Cargo pants and Cargo shorts are not permitted. Pants that resemble 5-pocket jeans are not permitted. Pants and shorts must not be excessively baggy.

Skirts, Skorts and Dresses for Girls

The appropriate colors for girls’ skirts, skorts and jumpers are khaki and navy blue. Please be aware that skirts and dresses may not be shorter than four (4) inches above the kneecap.

In addition, students are not permitted to roll down pants, shorts, or skirts at the top or roll them up at the bottom.

Free dress days

Shirts, jackets, and sweaters worn on free dress day may contain Christian appropriate designs or logos. Excessively tight or otherwise immodest clothing is also not permitted on free dress days. Slacks and jeans are acceptable as long as they are not too tight, oversized, or dragging on the ground. Skinny jeans and leggings are not acceptable. Frayed, patched, torn, or painted pants are not acceptable. The width of the pant legs worn on free days must not be over 13". Shorts must not be shorter than 6" above the knee. Tank tops must have straps that are 2” or wider. Free Dress days will be the last day of each quarter.

Spirit Day

Spirit Day is the last Friday of each month. Students may wear “Spirit Day” t-shirt, provided by FCA. Blue jeans or shorts within free dress guidelines are permitted on Spirit Day, however, this is not a free dress day. Spirit shirts or uniforms must be worn.

School Related Events

It is important that parents support the dress code to ensure that their children follow dress code 14

standards fully. Students who violate the dress code will be sent to the office and will wait until proper clothes can be brought from home. Please write your student’s name on all school clothing.

GENERAL APPEARANCE REGULATIONS

Girls/Young Ladies

1. Good personal hygiene is expected.2. Skirts and dresses may not be shorter than four inches above the kneecap. 3. Jewelry should be in good taste and should not be a safety hazard. No body piercing of any kind with the exception of one pair of pierced earrings.4. Excessive make-up is not appropriate.5. All clothing must be clean, neat and in good condition.6. On free dress days collarless, short-sleeved shirts are acceptable. Tops and dresses for all school functions must be modest and not revealing. Tight tops, tube tops, halter tops, low-cut tops, backless tops, crop-tops or spaghetti straps are not permitted.

Boys/Young Men

1. Good personal hygiene is expected.2. Hair must be well groomed and cut above the collar. 3. All clothing must be clean, neat and in good condition.4. Earrings are not permitted. No body piercing of any kind is acceptable.

No logos on clothing except small manufacturer's tags or FCA logo. The children will be playing, so comfortable, sturdy shoes would be most appropriate. Footwear is required for all students. Sandals must have back straps for safety's sake. Slick-soled, formal type shoes could prove dangerous.

Hairstyles and make-up should be natural, neat and conservative. No strange or unnatural cutting or coloring of the hair is acceptable. If dress becomes an issue the parent will be notified. The Board reserves the right to change the dress code. Please keep in mind that we have not covered every detail of the dress code for the obvious reason that it then evolves into something that is much too restrictive. Our goal is to accomplish common sense in the way students dress within the parameters of the dress code as outlined above.

ACADEMIC STANDARDS

15

There are four grading periods in the school year. Each grade issues a report card designed to report academic as well as behavioral strengths and weaknesses. We strongly encourage direct parent/teacher discussion; no report card can replace the conference. To this end all parents meet with their child's teacher for individual conferences at the end of the first grading period. We offer Parents Web for parents to follow their student’s progress online.

REPORT CARDS AND GRADING

Report cards are issued every quarter. They include academic grades and citizenship grades. Students should make arrangements with their teachers to meet at snack break, lunch, or after school to discuss any questions they may have regarding their grades.

The parents should look the report cards over, sign and comment, and return them for the first three quarters. A formal parent-teacher conference will accompany the distribution of first quarter report cards. Additional parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled as needed.

Interim progress reports will be sent home at the mid-point of each quarter. Parents may request a teacher conference any time there is a need or the teacher recognizes a need. Informal contact by note, telephone or visit is welcomed with the reminder that arrangements should be made in advance for a visit with the teacher.

Percentage grades, letter grades and grade point averages (GPA) are determined as follows:

Percent/Grade/GPA

Students receiving a grade point average of 3.7 or above in any given quarter will be placed on the Distinguished Honor Roll and will receive a certificate. Students who receive a grade point average of 3.2 to 3.69 in any given quarter will be placed on the Honor Roll and will receive a certificate. In addition, in order to be placed on Honor Roll the student must receive a passing grade in all subjects.

SCHOOL WORK/HOMEWORK

The children accomplish a tremendous amount of work in their classroom. The teaching staff requests parents go over all work the child brings home. All educational studies point to parental involvement as the most important key in the learning process of a child.

Homework is an integral part of the school program and each teacher is at liberty to give

16

homework to aid the student to advance in his/her studies. Therefore, each student is required to complete his/her homework on time. In order to strengthen a certain subject or skill, parents are asked to work consistently with the child at home in the area that needs strengthening and improvement. Parents should not do the work for the child, but rather provide encouragement and supervision so that the child will get the work accomplished. Homework is given for many reasons including the following:

1. For reinforcement: We believe that most students require solid drilling to master material essential to their educational process.

2. For practice: Following explanation, illustration and drill on new points until a student’s grasp of a subject becomes evident.

3. For remedial activity: As instruction progresses, various weak points in a student’s grasp of a subject become evident. Homework following instruction is given to overcome such difficulties.

4. For special projects: Book reports, compositions, special research assignments, Science Fair, Math Olympics and other projects are some of the activities that are frequently the subject of homework attention.

5. To complete assignments started in the classroom but not completed.

We urge all parents to take an active interest in the child’s homework. It is the responsibility of the student to see that assignments are properly written down and are completed on time. Many papers, including homework, need to have a parent’s signature and be returned to school. It is important that the student accept the responsibility of bringing homework to school on the day required by the teacher.

CURRICULUM

The Board and Faculty of FCA continually evaluate curriculum to keep current on educational materials. The majority of texts used at FCA are from Christian curriculum publishers, such as ABEKA Books, Bob Jones, and ACSI. FCA will only use secular texts if they are clearly the best available in the field, and if they are in a field of study that does not include humanistic philosophy or teaching. The curricular goal of FCA is to provide the very best educational materials for students while giving them a Christian curriculum that is consistent with the Word of God.

NATIONAL STANDARIZED TESTS17

As a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), Fillmore Christian Academy participates in a national standardized testing program each year. The individual student printouts are made available to the parents near the end of the school year.

ACADEMIC PROBATION

Any Elementary or Secondary student earning less than a 2.0 grade average for any quarter will be placed on academic probation and may be required to attend tutoring sessions. Students with two consecutive quarters below a 2.0 cumulative grade point average may be asked to leave the Academy. Students who are in jeopardy of not passing their present grade will be given the option of repeating the grade or leaving the school.

AWARDS

We believe that unusual efforts and achievement should be rewarded. It is scriptural that we should “...press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus...”

STRAIGHT “A” AWARD (Grades 1-6) Each student who earns an “A” in all subjects and in every quarter will receive an award at graduation.

OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD (Grades 1-6) Students who have been on the Distinguished Honor Roll or Honor Roll all four quarters will receive an award at Graduation.

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER AWARD (Grades K-6) Each year a student is selected from each classroom whom the teacher believes best exemplifies the fruit of the spirit in their words and actions in the classroom and on the playground.

SPECIAL ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

FCA students compete in the ACSI Spelling Bee and the ACSI Math Olympics. These activities are elective.

TUTORING

Students who need and desire special academic help may want to secure the services of a private tutor or contact a learning center. Some teachers at FCA are available for such outside help and some offer after-school help classes. This arrangement is handled on a personal basis between the student’s parents and the tutor. Charges for tutoring services are determined by the two parties.

PARENT PARTICIPATION18

Fillmore Christian Academy provides teachers and teacher's aides in the classroom for the purpose of teaching the children from the curriculum. However, because of the limited resources of a private school parent participation is needed in several areas: namely, occasional classroom help, field trip support, fundraising projects, etc. Remember, it takes all of us working together to keep the school operating as economically and efficiently as possible. The success of Fillmore Christian Academy rests on each of us. We each have to make the commitment of being partners in keeping our school afloat financially and in maintaining a positive atmosphere that is conducive to learning and personal growth for the students.

FUNDRAISING

FCA is endeavoring to keep low tuition rates for the benefit of each parent. For that reason we have to operate fund-raising programs and we anticipate each child and/or parent participation in helping us raise the additional funds needed for the various school projects. FCA receives no federal assistance other than a tax-exemption status; neither is it endowed or supported by any other organization.

PARENT TEACHER FELLOWSHIP (PTF)

The Fillmore Christian Academy PTF is a volunteer group of parents that have come together to love, serve and encourage the teachers, administration and students of our school. The main goal and purpose is to come along side of the administration and serve in many ways to make FCA the best it can be. It is not a separate entity of the school, but comes under the administration.

CLASSROOM VISITATION

The teaching staff of Fillmore Christian Academy wishes to extend an invitation to all parents to visit classrooms during the school year. We wish to encourage parent participation in all school activities. Advance notice of visitation is not required, but is encouraged so that a time which is most convenient to the teacher and the parent can be arranged. All parents much check in at the FCA office before entering any of the classrooms while school is in session.

PARTIES/OPEN HOUSE

FCA classrooms need assistance in bringing paper goods, punch and cookies for some of its events. When only a handful of people carry this load for the year, it becomes burdensome.

Party invitations which are addressed to less than the total class membership may not be distributed at school.

DONATIONS19

FCA relies totally on the income from tuition, fees and gifts to pay for salaries, facilities, equipment and supplies, and other educational expenses. It is our desire to maintain a high quality academic program at a reasonable tuition cost. This can be accomplished as interested friends help. All gifts are gratefully received and are deductible for income tax purposes.

FINANCIAL POLICIESFillmore Christian Academy operates on a very carefully controlled budget. An integral part of maintaining our financial responsibilities and salary commitments is the timely receipt of all registration and tuition fees from the parents of enrolled students. In order to accomplish this goal, the following policies have been adopted.

Fillmore Christian Academy has partnered with Smart Tuition to handle tuition collections. All families wishing to make monthly tuition payments will be charged a one time fee of $50.00 by Smart Tuition along with their first tuition payment. You will receive a Smart Tuition enrollment form where you will be able to choose your preferred method of payment and preferred payment plan. Monthly payments will no longer be accepted in the school office.

This policy will be strictly enforced to avoid any serious delinquent account problems for the parents or the school. By enrolling your child in Fillmore Christian Academy, you are committing yourself to making all the required payments in a timely manner. This will allow FCA to prudently manage their finances in accordance with scriptural principles.

FCA encourages payment of the whole year in advance by giving a $150.00 discount if the full year's tuition is paid by July 1.

Discounts are given to families with more than one child enrolled in FCA. The discount for the second child in a family is 10% and for the third and more is 15%.

There may be a minimal charge for some activities during the year.

RETURNED CHECKS

Please read the Smart Tuition agreement for information regarding their fees for returned checks or rejected automatic payments and late fees. If a check made out to Fillmore Christian Academy and paid in our office is returned there will be a returned check fee of $15 plus the amount of the check that will be due.

SAFETYEARTHQUAKE PROCEDUREIn the event of an emergency localized at our school/church site, we would move to a safe location on the property or a safe distance away, such as the high school lawn. In response to an extraordinary emergency situation associated with natural disasters, technological incidents, or national security emergencies, we will follow instructions given by emergency personnel.

FIRE PROCEDUREStudents will be taken to the sidewalk in front of the school on Central Avenue. If they need to be further away from the building, we will go and sit on the lawn of the high school. Upstairs classrooms have window ladders to utilize if primary exits are blocked. Fire and earthquake drills are conducted regularly throughout the school year.

SECURITY PROCEDURES Because we are located on the Central Campus of Faith Community Church, we must work together with church officials to provide access to some areas of the church, while also providing safety and security to our students and school/church property. In an effort to reduce the possibility of “unwanted” visitors on the property, church and school officials (FCA and Sonshine Preschool) have elected to lock the public access doors located on Kensington Street and South Central Avenue from 9:15-11:30 a.m. and from 1:15-2:15 p.m. each school day. The doors will not be deadbolt locked and push bars on the inside facilitate easy opening from the inside of the doors in an emergency. Please use the North Central Avenue entrance (located near the FCA office) if you must come to school during those hours. There is a doorbell for you to ring if the door is locked. Always check in at the FCA office before entering any of the classrooms.

SEARCH AND SEIZURE POLICYFillmore Christian Academy has adopted the following policy regarding search and seizure in order to insure the safety and security of all students and staff:

A student’s locker or desk is the property of Fillmore Christian Academy and is at all times under the control of the school. School authorities may perform general inspections of lockers and desks at any time without student consent. Students are not permitted to lock or otherwise impede access to any locker except with a lock provided by or approved by the school.

A student’s person or personal effects (e.g. backpack, purse, and pockets) may be searched by a staff member of FCA if the student is suspected to have in their possession any contraband (i.e., drugs, weapons). Searches may be performed without notice, without consent, and without a search warrant. All personal searches will be performed in a manner that is respectful of the norms of decency and the emotional maturity of the student. All personal searches will be conducted in the presence of another adult witness and only upon approval of the Administrator of the school or a specified designee. The student’s parents or guardians will be notified of the search as soon as reasonably possible.

PARENT-SCHOOL RELATIONSHIP

We encourage parents to take an active role in the process of educating their child. The effectiveness of the education at FCA hinges on how well parents, teachers and administration work together. When students sense there is disagreement, anger or frustration in the home-school relationship, they tend to be less motivated in their work. The goal of FCA faculty and staff is to do what is right, consistent and fair for each child.

If, as a parent, you disagree with a decision or the handling of an incident, please see your child’s teacher first. Matthew 18 directs us to go first to the person responsible for the decision and seek to resolve the issue. If the issue remains unresolved, it is then appropriate to contact the administration for a conference. Talking to other parents to gain support in opposing a decision only damages both the students and the school in the long run. If everyone will follow the Biblical pattern set forth in Matthew 18, disputes and disagreements will be resolved fairly and kindly.

If your child has a problem with another student, please try to work it out with the student and his or her family first. If the problem cannot be resolved, then please follow the above steps.

DISCLAIMERS

The statements set forth in this Handbook are for informational purposes only and should not be construed as the basis for a contract between a student’s family and Fillmore Christian Academy. While provisions will ordinarily be applied as stated, the Fillmore Christian Academy School Board reserves the right to change any provision in this Handbook without notice to our school families. However, every effort will be made to notify the families of such changes.

COMMUNICATION* PLEASE take the time to read the memos, teacher letters and info we send your way.

* Ask to see your students work.

* Encourage your student to organize their backpack the night before so that they come to school with all the necessary supplies, assignments and books.

* We highly recommend you spend time in your child’s classroom at least several times a year.

* Encourage your student to keep a reasonable bedtime and get up early enough to have breakfast.

* Provide your student with a quiet, well-lit place to do homework, and encourage responsibility in this area. A location near you provides accountability and a source of help if needed.

* Parents will be called and involved in discipline. We need your support to be effective.

* We believe it is the parents responsibility to do a dress code check BEFORE the student comes to school.

* Please remind your student to be encouraging to other students regarding academics or personal achievements.

* Ask questions, voice problems and concerns, share successes...we are all committed to helping you and your student(s).

* If you have a problem with another student or family, according to Matthew 18 talk with people and not about them. Act rather than react when problems arise...Most problems result from incomplete communication. Get the facts before you get upset.

* Pray for our school, teachers and School Board. Call promptly before problems escalate. Treat teachers, administrators, support staff, other parents and students with the same respect, using the same tone of voice that you prefer to experience yourself.

* When you blow it in any area, ask forgiveness. When we blow it, please forgive us. We all make mistakes and we are committed to forgiving one another.
