What is Dual Enrollment?

Acceleration Options

The Florida public school systems provide numerous options for public school students to access academically challenging curriculum, commonly referred to as acceleration. Acceleration options offered by school districts vary throughout the state.

Lake County Schools Dual Enrollment

A Florida public high school dual enrollment program is an acceleration option that allows high school students to pursue an advanced curriculum and earn college credit, increasing the likelihood of postsecondary success and reducing the time-to-degree. This successful program has allowed thousands of students to simultaneously earn credit toward a certificate or degree from an eligible postsecondary institution as well as credit toward high school graduation. An eligible student must be enrolled in a Lake County School Board public secondary school advancing on a curriculum track which satisfies the state mandated high school graduation requirements.

Overview of Dual Enrollment

The dual enrollment program allows for the enrollment of an eligible secondary student in postsecondary coursework creditable toward high school requirements and an associate or baccalaureate degree. The program provides eligible secondary students the opportunity to take LSSC courses while concurrently enrolled in high school. The Early Admission program is a form of dual enrollment through which eligible high school students enroll at LSSC on a full-time basis in courses that are creditable toward the high school diploma and the Associate degree.

Important Dual Enrollment information for parents & students – please read

Students must understand that dual enrollment courses are college-level courses, and the amount of work necessary to succeed in dual enrollment courses may be much greater than in high school courses. In addition, dual enrollment course

grades become a part of a student's permanent college transcript and are calculated into the student's permanent postsecondary GPA. Students must understand they are starting their permanent college transcript once they enter dual enrollment. Therefore, it is important to be motivated, academically ready, and socially mature to be successful in college courses. Poor performance in dual enrollment courses may ultimately impact one's postsecondary career, including academic standing and financial aid eligibility. It is important for students to do well in college courses to realize the benefits of dual enrollment.

Dual Enrollment Eligibility

*Prior to deciding to dual enroll student's must meet with their high school counselor to discuss their eligibility for Dual Enrollment with LSSC.*

Student must be a Junior (11th grade) or Senior (12th grade) on or before the first day of the college semester for which they are enrolling.

Per Florida statutes, Section 1007.271(3).

Students must have a minimum un-weighted high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.

Student must demonstrate readiness for college coursework through scores on the Enhanced ACT, SAT-I, or PERT, and/or the FCAT 2.0 Reading to participate in college credit dual enrollment.

In accordance with SBE 6A-10.0315:

a score of 262 on the Grade 10 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test 2.0 (FCAT 2.0) Reading demonstrates readiness for college-level coursework in reading and writing. Students who achieve such a score and enroll in a Florida College System institution within 2 years of achieving such a score are exempt from taking the reading and writing subtests of the Florida Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT).

admissions requirements under s. 1007.263, F.S.

All dual enrollment grades, including a “W” for withdrawal, become a part

of the student’s permanent college transcript and may affect subsequent

postsecondary admission.

Loss of Dual Enrollment Eligibility

Students will lose dual enrollment eligibility in subsequent semesters if:

They withdraw from an LSSC course after the add/drop deadline

There is an LSSC appeal process for a student who wishes to appeal due to extenuating circumstances.

Course loads

During the first semester of dual enrollment, students will be able to register for a maximum of two classes.Once a student has demonstrated the ability to master advanced courses, they are then permitted to enroll in a maximum of 11 credit hours per semester (one college course at LSSC usually equals 3 credit hours).

Course enrollment options

Pursuant to Florida statute, dual enrollment course options are intended to shorten the time necessary for a student to complete the requirements associated with the completion of a high school diploma and a postsecondary degree, broaden the scope of curricular options available at the high school, and increase the depth of study available.

LSSC and Lake County Schools will guide students toward courses that supplement rather than supplant available at the high school.

High school counselors will guide students toward classes that will fulfill high school graduation requirements as well as LSSC graduation requirements. Each dual enrollment course that a student takes at LSSC should be academically rigorous.

Students must seek mutual approval by designated representative of the School Board and LSSC in order to register for the classes listed below:

- LSSC courses not include in the Florida High School Subject Area Equivalency List.

- LSSC courses not identified in the Postsecondary Student Education Plan (PSEP).

- LSSC courses that meet high school non-academic elective credit transferability.

Courses not available to dual enrollment students

- LSSC independent study courses- LSSC developmental courses

College Placement Testing & PERT InformationPlacement tests are required, by state law, for all students entering a Florida college. Results of placements tests indicate if students are prepared for college level classes. Placement tests assess knowledge of reading, math and English (writing).

There are several tests available to students: ACT (American College Test) SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) PERT (Post-Secondary Education Readiness Test)

LSSC will accept qualifying test scores from any of these tests or combination of tests. The chart below indicates qualifying test scores for dual enrollment for each test:

Page 8 of 17BP 10/18/13

Page 9:  · Web viewPlacement tests assess knowledge of reading, math and English (writing). There are several tests available to students: ACT (American College Test) SAT (Scholastic Aptitude

Please speak to your high school counselor about testing for dual enrollment as they would know what is best for your individual needs.

You may take the PERT for dual enrollment purposes if:

You meet all dual enrollment eligibility requirements (class standing, GPA, good conduct record) except for test scores.

You haven’t taken the ACT or SAT yet or have not scored at the minimum levels on these assessments for dual enrollment eligibility.

You have an FCAT score of 262 (satisfying the qualifying reading/writing scores) but need a qualifying math score for dual enrollment. In this case you would only take the Math portion of the PERT.

You want to take a math course at LSSC but did not score at the minimum levels for qualification.

Students are encouraged to finish Algebra 2 before taking the PERT exam. In order to score your best on math portion of the PERT having knowledge of Algebra 2 is crucial.

How do I sign up for the PERT?

The PERT is offered two times a year for students interested in Dual Enrollment (Usually in November and again in March). Your counselor will have to verify your dual enrollment eligibility before they can provide you with a Dual Enrollment Test Referral form for the PERT. Your high school will announce when the PERT test will be administered weeks leading up to the administration dates. Please listen carefully to morning and afternoon announcements. Also make an appointment to see your counselor to make sure you know when the test will be administered and if you qualify to test.

Counselors will determine if students are eligible for PERT testing and will provide students with a Dual Enrollment Placement Test Form if the student is planning to qualify with PERT scores.

Page 10:  · Web viewPlacement tests assess knowledge of reading, math and English (writing). There are several tests available to students: ACT (American College Test) SAT (Scholastic Aptitude

The student will take this form home for a parent(s) signature showing approval of the student’s decision. Students must have this signed form with them on testing day at the high school. It will be their ticket to complete the assessment. Students cannot be tested without the signed Test Referral Form.

The 2 time test taking limit on the PERT for high school students has been lifted.

Before taking the PERT

Students should prepare for the PERT by taking practice tests. You can find a practice test by following the link below: https://college.measuredsuccess.com/mscollege/help_resources/P.E.R.T_Study_Guide.pdf

On test day

Students must bring their completed and signed Test Referral Form with them on testing day at the high school.

Please pay attention to the test date on your test referral form.

You will not be able to test without a Test Referral Form signed by and verified by your counselor, your parent, and yourself.

Upon successful completion of the placement test (Enhanced ACT, SAT-I or PERT) and receipt of scores, students must obtain the following information from their high school counselor:

LSSC Dual Enrollment Application Printout of GPA verification PERT/SAT/ACT and/or FCAT Reading scores

Leesburg campuses. This paperwork is required to be submitted before the posted

admissions application deadline announced on the Lake-Sumter State College Dual

Enrollment website http://www.lssc.edu/admissions/de/Pages/default.aspx.

LSSC New Student Orientation

Once you are admitted to LSSC, first time dual enrollment students are required to complete the two part New Student Orientation (NSO).

As a new student, orientation is one of the most important things that must do be done before starting out at any post-secondary institution. Orientation will inform students about degree requirements, planning and registering for classes, and additional information vital to their success.

For more information on LSSC New Student Orientation please refer to the LSSC Dual Enrollment Website: http://www.lssc.edu/admissions/de/Pages/default.aspx and the NSO website http://www.lssc.edu/academics/ac/Pages/NSO.aspx.
