MISSION STATEMENT:

The mission of The Davies Project (TDP) is to provide community-based, non-medical support for local families facing serious, long-term health challenges with a child.

Seventy percent of the children who use the Lansing area subspecialty clinics are on Medicaid and are missing 60% of their doctor appointments, often because they do not have a reasonable way of getting there. Since each appointment is essential for monitoring a child’s condition and keeping him or her as healthy as possible (and out of the hospital), TDP’s first goal is to help families by giving them volunteer-provided rides to Lansing area medical appointments.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:

Dear Friends,

This is the first annual report produced by The Davies Project for Mid-Michigan Children. To me, it represents a real milestone. Three years ago, when I founded TDP, I naively thought it would be up and running in six months! Rather, it took two and a half years of careful planning and problem solving to get to where we are today.

Yet, after six months of delivering rides to local medical appointments for families with seriously ill children, it is clear we are on the right track! Our families are grateful beyond words, our volunteer drivers are enjoying the time they get to spend with the children and their parents, and more and more families are reaching out to us as they learn about The Davies Project.

While the rides we provide are an important health care access tool, the rides are also proving an excellent way to break through the significant isolation families experience when caring, long-term, for a sick child. As the mother of a cancer survivor, this is something I can relate to—and is the true impetus behind my decision to found this organization.

ANNUAL REPORT

Everything we do at The Davies Project, now and in the future, is geared towards making the journey easier for each family that finds itself in the mind-boggling and unanticipated position of having a critically ill child. By providing rides to doctor appointments now, and providing other kinds of support later, we are fulfilling a serious need in our community. I hope this report shows you how far we have come and convinces you about the importance of taking this work much, much further.

Please consider joining The Davies Project journey. Volunteer your time as a driver or make a donation. Most of all, spread the word about who we are. Together, let’s make our community one that rallies around The Davies Project. Together, let’s provide both traditional and innovative forms of support to Lansing area families learning to cope with the reality of caring for a really sick child.

All the best,

Pam Miklavcic, Ph.D.Founder and Executive DirectorThe Davies Project for Mid-Michigan Children

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Board Members,

It is with distinct pleasure that I submit the first annual Message from the President of The Davies Project for Mid-Michigan Children. Over the past two and a half years, The Davies Project for Mid-Michigan Children has grown from the conceptual framework envisioned by Pam Miklavcic, to the first of its kind program for the Lansing Michigan area. As many can recall the first meeting, the passion, desire, and overall enthusiasm felt that day continues today, over two years later.

The mission statement of TDP encompasses the true nature and focus of our work; however, we have only just begun to embark on this journey. There will never be an end

to critically ill children, nor, will there be an end to the support TDP will freely give. We have made great strides in providing transportation for the families in need of these accommodations, but we must keep focused on the road that lies ahead.

On the road ahead, we have the task of trying to virtually eliminate missed sub-specialty doctors’ appointments due to transportation issues and begin the process of exploring other segments where TDP can produce positive results for families in need of non-medical support. I look forward to the years ahead and helping shape the future for many children to live long and productive lives so that they can carry the torch towards a prosperous future.

Sincerely, Brett WilliamsBoard President, The Davies Project for Mid-Michigan Children

ANNUAL REPORT

PROGRESS TO DATE AND RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

The first two and a half years of The Davies Project were spent laying a very careful groundwork, preparing for the day when we could finally begin providing non-medical services to Lansing area families with seriously ill children.

More specifically, the first year was spent building an effective board of directors, researching how TDP could make a solid, positive impact on our community, clarifying the vision (including the decision to make transportation to medical appointments our first major goal), and applying for non-profit status.

The second year was spent selling TDP’s vision to Sparrow Health System (SHS) and Michigan State University (MSU) that together provide the bulk of pediatric subspecialty care in Lansing. This meant working through risk management details, meeting with Senator Stabenow’s staff that helped expedite receipt of our non-profit status from the IRS and accessing affordable yet thorough insurance coverage for the project’s transportation activities. Extensive networking (to develop a first pool of supporters) and applying for seed money grants took up a significant amount of time as well. An endeavor like this involves many details.

For example, during Fall 2014: 1) a mechanism had to be established for conducting a thorough criminal background check and driving record check for each volunteer driver, 2) a comprehensive volunteer driver manual had to be written, 3) family access mechanisms had to be developed in conjunction with SHS and MSU, 4) a brochure for distribution to clinic families had to be written (as did one to recruit volunteers and donors), and 5) TDP had to both recruit drivers and host its first volunteer driver training in November. Simultaneously, we were busy setting up an office donated by Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lansing (at 528 North Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.). We were also actively constructing our website (www.thedaviesproject.org) and social media presence to attract volunteers and inform families about TDP’s work.

The good news is that the above efforts paid off when TDP began driving patients in December 2014, using an inaugural crew of twelve volunteer drivers. We easily reached our goal of driving 15 families by the end of March and are now delivering 22 clients to regular medical appointments in the Lansing area. To date, more than 100 appointments have been kept thanks to The Davies Project.

ANNUAL REPORT

Our goal now is to grow our volunteer pool to 30-40 drivers by the end of 2015 so that we can begin accommodating more families. This is important given how Lansing area physicians and medical staff approach us regularly about meaningful, high impact ways to expand the transportation we provide. We will keep you posted as new avenues and directions open up to us.

To meet this growing demand, it is important that TDP move from an all volunteer staff to one that includes a couple of paid positions. Along those lines, the Executive Director is now paid a partial salary. Likewise, a part-time Family Services Coordinator has just been hired to manage all aspects of arranging rides for families. Until funding increases enough to accommodate more paid staff, TDP is presently working with three, part-time, undergraduate interns and is in negotiations with the MSU Program in Public Health to bring on two graduate interns as well. As the workload increases, these extra hands on deck are proving very important.

You can meet some of our families and drivers by visiting our website at www.thedaviesproject.org and viewing our new video about TDP’s work. You can also make an easy on-line donation at this site using PayPal.

A final piece of positive news to share in this report is that TDP will be this year’s recipient of funds raised by Max’s Race in East Lansing. Max’s Race is held annually on the last Saturday of June on the beautiful MSU campus, in memory of Max Matthews—a young East Lansing boy who died ten years ago from meningitis complications. Max’s parents are the organizers of this 5K event and TDP is humbly honored to have been identified by the Matthews family as worthy of their support. Thank you, Natalie and Jim.

FUNDING AND EXPENDITURES TO DATE:

As the following two graphs show, TDP funding is slowly growing, with a greater emphasis on grants over private donations from 2013 to 2014. In the coming year, grant applications and donor solicitations are expected to increase. This is because TDP’s programming is now underway and an employee has been hired to manage this part of the business, freeing up the Executive Director’s time to focus on fundraising and awareness building throughout the community.

11

ANNUAL REPORT

Clearly, TDP’s funding is moving in a positive direction. As the following graph shows, yearend equity for 2014 was approximately double that for 2013. Much of the doubling was accounted for by restricted grant funds.

12

Page 13: €¦ · Web viewTHE DAVIES PROJECT. Annual Report. FY 2013-14. Typically, an annual report covers the previous year’s activity. This report is unique in that it covers activity

ANNUAL REPORT

The following graph depicts spending during 2013 and 2014. Clearly, a bulk of the spending took place in 2014, closer to the initiation of actual programming. Another striking feature of this graph is that no staffing expenditures have yet been incurred. All expenses during this time period were focused on producing materials and media to start spreading the word about The Davies Project.

2015 BUDGET:

Below is The Davies Project’s board approved budget for 2015. Note that, at this point, the entire annual budget is less than $30,000. TDP is being as efficient and effective as it can with the funds that have come in. With an eye to fiscal responsibility, the board also approved a proposal (except in the case of a board-approved emergency) to set aside the next $25,000 in donations (expected in 2015) to cover a majority of the bare bones costs anticipated for 2016. Keep in mind that bare bones costs include only part-time pay for staff.
