Achieving Success

Aspiration & Achievement – Scholarship – Perseverance – Integrity – Respect & Responsibility – Enthusiasm

Welcome back to the final part of the Summer Term and the end of the academic year. We hope that you had a lovely and relaxing break over the half term. In this last term children have a whole host of academic activities and events to look forward to, ranging from Sports Day to the residential trip and the Great Atwood Bake-off. The focus of the term will be making sure that all the children are ready and equipped to leave Key Stage 1 and make the exciting jump to Key Stage 2. The children have been working hard on building up their independence over the year and this will have developed their confidence and enabling to be ready for Year 3. This term promises to be a lot of hard work but also a great amount of fun for both teachers and students as we prepare for them to move on and continue their academic journey. PSHEChildren will continue to be in school reporters and looking out for all the kind acts which happen in Atwood daily. These will be complied into the Happy Newspaper to celebrate all the happiness that is spread by the children. Don’t forget to take a copy for yourself from the playground. There will be a focus in what to do if you see somebody being unkind and how to react to a bully.

LiteracyTowards the beginning of the term children will be focussing on developing, planning and creating their own fantasy stories They will focus on having a writer’s voice in and enticing the reader into their creative stories. Getting your child to verbally tell you their stories will really help them sequence their writing and expand their vocabulary. During the week of the Bake-Off children will be putting their marketing skills to the test writing adverts convincing us all to choose their delicious products. Throughout this exciting week the children’s teamwork skills will be put to the test as they develop, design and create their own pastry delights. As the term draws to a close, there will be a renewed focus on poetry with children writing their own

Drama and Art Art is replaced this term with cookery and children will be pulling up their sleeves and creating culinary delights. They will be closely following recipes and measuring out ingredients to create a range of sweet and savoury treats. Within Drama children will be exploring life by the sea and imagining they are part of this diverse environment.

Physical EducationAs Sports Day creeps closer and closer children will be working on honing their athletic skills ready for this hotly anticipated event. Children will be concentrating on both their field skill (javelin, shot-put and the hammer) as well as track events. Children will work towards beating their own personal bests and becoming the best athlete they can be.

Science and IT.Within Science children will be concentrating on looking at the different habitats that animals live in. They will be investigating why certain animals have adapted to live in particular environments and what challenges face them.

MathematicsChildren will be resuming the Maths Mastery programme and will be focusing on a variety of topics in this final term. They will be taking the mathematical knowledge they have gained throughout the year and applying it to weight, length, capacity and volume. There will be a big focus on time with children consolidating their ability to tell the time and also using it to solve more complicated word problems. Children must be able to tell the time in 5 minute intervals by the end of this year. Please keep practising this with your child.

Other Useful Information Children will keep the same timetable for P.E (each Tuesday and Wednesday) and Salsa will continue on a Friday afternoon. We will continue to issue homework and reading books on a Friday, to be returned on the following Tuesday. Thank you again for all your support throughout the academic year.
