Maketu School is a bi-lingual school. Our kura provides daily te reo Maori instruction to level 3 in years 2 to 6.
Karakia, Te Arawa tikanga me kawa, te reo Maori, kapahaka and waiata are integrated and implemented into every day learning and planning.
Bi-lingual signage is displayed in most areas.
Developing positive relationships most conducive to learning including whanau and the wider community.

Assessment tool results and overall teacher judgements indicated reading comprehension and vocabulary as a particular area of need. In years 3 to 6 25% of tamariki were below National Standards and 75% of tamariki in years 1 and 2.

Maketu School: Analysis of variance of writing target
Focus: Writing
Strategic aim: National Standards are used effectively to support improved progress and achievement in student outcomes. Students have ownership of their learning and know what to do to achieve National Standards.
We chose this strategic aim because the data had not been collected school wide as part of gauging student progress in writing.
Annual aim for 2011: To increase the number of tamariki achieving at or above the National Standard for writing.
Baseline data 2011: Analysis of school-wide assessment has shown an inconsistency in the implementation of and gathering of writing assessment levels in line with the National Standards across our kura. Overall teacher judgements on levelling writing samples need to be carried out collectively to insure consistency in levelling based on the National Standards.
Target 2011: Writing data gathered from assessment carried out in June will be used as baseline data to ensure progress and achievement can be measured and analysed.

Writing data gathered from assessment carried out in June was used as baseline data to measure and analyse progress and achievement in November.
In years 3 to year 6 we achieved significant shifts with a 51% increase in students working at or above the National Standards in writing in November 2011.
91% of tamariki were working below or well below in June and 37% were working below or well below the National Standard in November.
In year 1 and year 2 we made progress of 14% from June to November working at or above in National Standards in writing.
45% of tamariki were working below or well below in June and 27% were working below or well below the National Standard in November.
To ensure we had baseline data school-wide to measure achievement in writing.

Maketu School: Analysis of Variance of National Standards TargetFocus: National Standards
Strategic aim: National Standards are used effectively to support improved progress and achievement in studentoutcomes. Students have ownership of their learning and know what to do to achieve NationalStandards.
We chose this aim because BoT members were unsure about National Standards and how theyrelated to student progress and achievement.
Annual aim for 2011: Board of trustees, principal and teaching staff have sufficient knowledge and understanding of theNational Standards and how our tamariki are doing in relation to them to effectively supportstudent progress and achievement.
Baseline data 2011: We have five trustees on our board who have wide variances as to board responsibilities. We alsohave three relatively new teachers to our kura. In relation to the National Standards our staff arein the process of refining assessment methods to better identify the strengths and learning needsof our tamariki. We also need to involve tamariki far more in assessment of their own learning andset targets more tailored to specific students. We also need to be more systematic about how weanalyse data gathered after assessment periods.
