Job Description Main Role

To deliver and develop high-quality research-led teaching in medical education within the Wales Deanery/ PGMDE. To pursue excellence in teaching and pedagogy and to inspire others to do the same. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

Teaching

Independently to contribute to module and curriculum development and lead modules, inspiring students (Grade 7 and 8). To design, develop and deliver a range of modules, developing innovative teaching techniques and engaging in pedagogic research in Medical Education (Grade 8 only)

To undertake the work of an academic role including setting and marking assessments and providing constructive feedback to students, administration, and participation in committee work (Grade 7 and 8)

To act as programme manager, module leader and tutor – ensuring delivery of teaching in line with current curricular requirements, developing and applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students (Grade 8 only)

To supervise the work of students including postgraduate dissertations and thesis (Grade 7 and 8)

To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students (Grade 7 and 8)

Scholarship

To contribute to and disseminate research and/or scholarly findings at professional meetings and conferences at national and international levels (Grade 7 and 8)

To undertake and lead educational research, pedagogical evaluations and scholarly activity in medical education and contribute to the overall scholarship of the Wales Deanery/ PGMDE (Grade 8 only)

To engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and /or outputs which advance knowledge within medical education (Grade 7 and 8)

To contribute to and/or lead successful bids for funding (Grade 8 only)

Leadership

To provide academic leadership by co-ordinating the work of others to ensure medical education programmes are organised and delivered effectively (Grade 8 only)

To be involved in strategic planning within medical education and

These activities are expected to contribute to the Wales Deanery/PGMDE and the enhancement of its regional, national, and international profile (Grade 7 and 8).

To participate in medical education administration and activities to promote the Wales Deanery/ PGMDE and its work to the wider university and the outside world (Grade 7 and 8)

Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role (Grade 7 and 8).

Person Specification

Essential Criteria 

Qualifications and Education 1.     Postgraduate degree at PhD or Masters level in Education or related social science subject area (Grade 7 and 8) 2.     Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or experience (Grade 7 and 8). 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 3.     Significant teaching experience at a high level of quality at postgraduate level in the field of learning and teaching (Grade 7). Substantial teaching experience at a high level of quality at postgraduate level in the field of learning and teaching with evidence of innovation (Grade 8). 4.     Growing national reputation for learning and teaching (Grade 7). An established national and growing international reputation for learning and teaching (Grade 8) 5.     Expertise to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the medical education programmes (Grade 7 and 8) with evidence of innovation (Grade 8 only) 6.     An established expertise and evidence of research within higher education in the field of learning and teaching (Grade 7). Well established expertise and significant proven portfolio of research in learning and teaching (Grade 8) 7.     Evidence of successful supervision of Master students dissertations within a cognate discipline (Grade 8 only) 

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working 8.     Excellent communication skills with the ability to disseminate complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media, including virtual learning environments (Grade 7 and 8). 9.     The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor (Grade 7 and 8). 10.   Proven record of academic leadership including co-ordinating with others to ensure student needs and expectations are met and demonstrating creativity, innovation and team working (Grade 8 only)

Summary 

Wales Deanery / Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education 

The Wales Deanery/PGMDE is responsible for the management and quality assurance of education and training of some 2,600 Doctors and Dentists in Wales and, for General Practitioners and Dentists, their continuing professional development in line with the requirements of the General Medical Council (GMC) and the General Dental Council (GDC).   Our client group includes Foundation, Specialty Training grade doctors and Dental Vocational Trainees.   The Wales Deanery/PGMDE also has a role in relation to overseeing the provision of Continuing Professional Development for General Medical and Dental Practitioners across Wales. Our goal is to deliver excellence in postgraduate medical and dental education for Wales by ensuring that all training grade doctors and dentists in Wales have access to high quality postgraduate facilities and educational support so that they can achieve their potential in service provision to the NHS in Wales. 

The Wales Deanery’s primary responsibility is training which is delivered by NHS Consultants and General Practitioners (Educational Supervisors) across Wales.   In addition to this major role in respect of training future doctors and dentists in Wales, the Deanery also runs a number of taught academic courses tailoring existing course provision and developing bespoke short ‘training the trainer’ courses to target the continuing professional development needs of Doctors and Dentists in Wales.

The central offices of the Wales Deanery/PGMDE are situated on the Heath Park campus in Cardiff and house some 119 members of staff including the Postgraduate Dean, medical professionals, management and administrative personnel.   The majority of our staff, some 185 part-time educators, are out-posted in hospitals and general practices across Wales.
