Meeting Place: Woolley Woods off Ecclesfield Road by the Lost Gateway - walk up from the car park off Ecclesfield road

Day One – Building the furnace 8 places

We will dig clay from beneath the trees and mix it with other materials to create special bricks. Then we will build and shape our iron smelting furnace. We shall celebrate by cooking marshmallows!

Day Two – Firing the furnace8 places (priority will be given to those that have participated in Day One)

We will light and feed the furnace with iron ore and charcoal. We will work the bellows to get the furnace white hot, and keep it at that temperature for a few hours, so the iron will be produced. At the end of the day we will break open the furnace so the molten rock (slag) will run out and we can extract the iron bloom.
