REACH HIGHER And that's really the goal: to inspire young people to reach higher to complete their education beyond high school so that they can own their futures. We're focusing on things like financial aid, college counseling, academic and summer planning, and college visits. Our objective is to ensure that every student in this country understands how to pursue and complete their education, whether it's at a traditional four-year college or a community college, or via a professional certificate or degree.

-- Michelle Obama Reach Higher Initiative

REACH HIGHER

Nine Elements to Support and Encourage a College Going Culture

College Talk is part of each student’s experience. School staff and community members share their experiences about college pathways and/or create new experiences that support college and career readiness for all students.

Clear Expectations ensure that all students are prepared for a full range of post-secondary options. What it takes to be prepared is explicitly defined, communicated and part of daily school culture.

Information and Resources are regularly updated and readily available in centralized places as the media center, lunchroom, career/college center, main office, library, and/or college corners in classrooms and are accessible to students, families, faculty, and community members.

Comprehensive Counseling is available for every student, primarily from counselors, and supported by outreach staff, teachers and resource personnel. All counselors are informed and have access to college and career readiness training. Decisions about coursework and career options are made with post secondary opportunities in mind.

Testing and Curriculum development and practices are geared to college and career readiness. All students know about Explore, Plan and ACT testing and have the opportunity to take the tests regardless of cost. Students can self-select college prep, honors, AP, and advanced courses.

Faculty Involvement is constant and all school staff maintain the college culture at the school. Faculty is up to date on important “college and career readiness knowledge” in order to integrate it into regular classroom activities.

Family Involvement is active and regular. Families are informed partners in the CCR-Plan process and support students through the college and career readiness pathway. They have opportunities to gain knowledge about college and career readiness and are aware that all students can be college bound.

College Partnerships are strong and facilitate college-related activities such as field trips to college campuses and fairs, academic enrichment programs, and raising awareness of and aspirations toward college.

Articulation among elementary, junior high, and high school is seamless. The college message is constant as students move through their educational journey. Work being done at each school coordinates with activities at other levels and sites.

REACH HIGHER Top 5 Reasons to Go to College: A better paying job On average college graduates earn as much as 65% more than high school graduates. Most students want the best paying job they can get.

A more secure future Statistics show that people with higher levels of education and advanced training tend to have better job security and stay ahead of unemployment curves.

Respect Going to college and earning a certificate, a diploma, or a degree will help you feel better about yourself and also help you gain more responsibility and get promotions at work.

More choices Most jobs today require specialized training that you can only get in college. That means you will need 1, 2, 4, or more years of education and training after high school to be prepared for jobs in your future.

Be the first! Are you hesitant because no one in your family has gone to college? Start a tradition! Education and training in college can have a positive impact on you and your entire family.

Best Practices Checklist Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Program (CCGP)

Yes

No

ASSESS YOUR CCGP 1 CCGP is fully planned and ready for delivery to all students beginning the first day of school (program calendar,

lesson plans, materials and supplies) and is followed through the end of the school year. 2 Counselors review and use student data to develop CCGP goals and guide PLC discussions.

3 CCGP planning and coordinating meetings occur regularly (weekly CCGP department meeting, monthly CCGP meetings with administration, bi-annual CCGP network meetings) and agendas and minutes are documented.

4 Counselor caseloads are balanced and students are assigned by alpha.

5 Counselors deliver at least three (3) developmentally appropriate CCR curriculum lessons/activities for each grade level to all students in the school (that means 3 per school year per grade level).

6 Counselors conduct at least one (1) individual CCR-Plan meeting annually with each student and their parents/guardians (that means every student, every grade, every year).

7 Counselors keep an accurate and up-to-date record of their meetings with students and their parents /guardians (office logs, Student Support Process form).

8 Counselors lead out as advocates for equity and convey the expectation that all students, regardless of their backgrounds and economic status, can prepare for college and career.

9 Counselors keep current on all areas of their work (personal/social, academic, CCR) and attend all district professional learning meetings.

10 Counselors ensure that all USOE Program Standards are met and evidence of implementation is Documented as required.
