Social Media

My Claim

Although, there are some psychological benefits to society using social media, these sites are ultimately generating negative affects on society.

Increased influence of peer pressure and comparison of our lives to others

“Relative deprivation”- When you have the perception that you are worse off than these other people you compare yourself to.

Increased influence of peer pressure and comparison of our

lives to others

A new University of Michigan study on college-aged adults finds that the more they used Facebook, the worse they felt. The study, published in the journal PLOS One, found Facebook use led to declines in moment-to-moment happiness and overall life satisfaction.

Urban Dictionary

Increased motivation to social media shame or cyber bully

Some examples of these are the hashtags #passengershaming which include pictures of unknowing passengers with a shaming picture or the hashtag #WomenWhoEatOnTubes

Cyber Bullying

An organization that aims for internet safety called Enough is Enough conducted a survey that found 95% of teenagers that use social media have witnessed cyber bullying, and 33% have been victims themselves

Rise of narcissism

Narcissism- excessive or erotic interest in oneself and one's physical appearance.

A study by Larry Rosen at California State University, presented a study on how teens who spend too much time on Facebook are more likely to show narcissistic tendencies and display signs of other behavioral problems. Rosen said the negative effects of teens overusing social media include making them more prone to vain, aggressive and anti-social behavior and that excessive use can lead to poorer academic performance.
