The Triax CSE 3300 headend - equipped with ASI (Asynchronous Serial Interface)

Triax CSE 3300. The Triax CSE 3300 is actually nothing short of an absolute supermodel in the realm of high-tech headends. You can use this headend for anything really – supporting a large number of the channels in chains of hotels or between individual blocks in large motel complexes; big city hospitals; and extensive residential communities.

Find all the data on the headend solution that’s right for you on:

If this seems the right type of headend for your project, we suggest you also take a closer look at the Triax TDH 700 mentioned elsewhere in this catalogue.

But even though we are talking large scale here, with no trouble at all you can choose and pick the exact satellite or terrestrial channels you want to distribute to the end-users. Simply mix and combine them any way you want – and get 100 percent freedom and flexibility.

The Triax CSE 3300 headendis equipped with ASI – an Asynchronous Serial Interface.

Triax CSE 3300 has twin modules.

The Triax CSE 2800 headend - with quad tuner modules

Triax CSE 2800. Small or medium-size institutions or hotels – or any other ‘modest size’ building or complex will find the CSE 2800 headend a convenient and easy means of tv signal distribution. Very simply put, four tuners and outputs on each individual board have been fused – and built into one unit. This provides an efficient and cost-conscious headend solution. Converts satellite and terrestrial signals and turns them into QAM and PAL signal outputs.

Triax CSE 2800 has quad modules.

Page 6: - your quick guide to the perfect solution · 2 Triax high quality headends - how you pick the right one for every project From the small privately run Bed & Breakfast to large hotels,

Triax TDH 700 - one more large-scale headend

Here is another large-scale headend

Roughly speaking, TDH 700 bridges the gap between CSE 2800 and CSE 3300. So if you feel CSE 3300 offers too much compared to your actual need, and CSE 2800 too little – the TDH 700 is probably what you are looking for.

But make no mistake. TDH 700 is by no means a weak, so-so compromise. This headend is based on an entirely different approach. Its building blocks are master and slave modules – rather than twin or quad tuners (CSE 3300 and 2800 respectively). And this introduces you to different sets of options and opportunities. If you are an installer, the following example is likely to sound familiar.

Imagine you are installing a headend system in a rather big apartment block – made up of perhaps 74 separate one-family apartments. Naturally, some residents will have a brand new flat screen tv in their living room – while others still enjoy that good ol’ telly that has never let them down. So, how do you guarantee each and every person in this apartment block the best possible tv reception – after you have finished your installation?

Well, TDH 700 could be your answer. Let us tell you why.

- if this seems the right type of headend for your project, we suggest you also take a closer look at the Triax CSE 3300 mentioned elsewhere in this catalogue.

Triax TDH 700

Triax TDH 700 - based on an entirely different approach

A lot of new tv sets don’t receive traditional analogue PAL signals too well. And older sets are no good with digital signals. TDH 700 solves this dilemma. It simply distributes every signal/tv channel in both PAL and QAM modulations. At the end of the line, throughout the apartment block, each individual television set picks up the right type of signal – and ignores the other one.

Triax TDH 700 also offers Free-to-Air and Common Interface (CI) modules for tv channel decryption and Muxing modules – which offers optimal flexibility if you want to pick and choose exactly which channels to distribute to the end-users.

Find all the data on the headend solution that’s right for you on:

With the TDH 778 channel converter module the new digital-terrestrial tv signals can be received and converted to another channel without impairing the signal quality. This means that the digital signal can be looped into an unoccupied channel in the antenna system and used to connect a digital set-top box

The QAM muxing module will enable the TDH 700 to send out up to 5 input channels in the QAM format along with the analogue (PAL) format simultaneously. The customer will then experience broadcasted tv in the original high digital quality on his flat screen.

Master/slave functionality gives you the opportunity to use all the services that you receive from oneMUX or transponder. The Master (tuner) to receive the whole MUX or transponder, and depending how many services you want to distribute, then you just add slave modules. Possibility to decrypt the whole data stream.

Triax CSE 6-8-12-16 and 24 - a dedicated product

Imagine you are making an installation in an area – or country – with either satellite OR terrestrial transmission. And perhaps your customer is a small hotel or a Bed & Breakfast – or something similar-sized. Here is one way to keep it simple, efficient and cheap: You install a complete all-in-one headend box with six (or 8, 12,16 or 24) satellite input channels (or terrestrial input) – and six (or 8, 12, 16 or 24) PAL output signals.

In other words, this is a very dedicated product – aimed at a specific market, without large and complex needs. So, no need for a complicated solution. CSE 6 (and all the other numbers...) is easy to mount. And it just works. What else do you need?

You get a complete all-in-one headend box with 6, 8, 12,16 or 24 channels - ready to use

Triax TNH- mix a number of satellite AND terrestrial inputs

TNH is a digital headend modular system that distributes Free-to-Air programmes

in SMATV networks.

Triax TNHIf you want more options and flexibility than offered by the CSE 6-8-12-16 and 24, the TNH is probably just right for you.Now you can add satellite or terrestrial modules, one by one, allowing you to compose a more versatile and flexible headend box. Compared with the above-mentioned CSE 6-8-12-16 and 24 types you still get a number of PAL output signals – but by contrast you can now mix a number of satellite AND terrestrial input signals.

On top of that, TNH lets you choose mono or stereo as well as VSB or DSB modules. Put together, all this makes the TNH future friendly. It allows you or your customer to make easy changes to the system – if the need for specific programmes or tv channels changes along the way.

TNH is a digital headend modular system that distributes Free-to-Air programmes in SMATV networks. Adapts to the number of programmes you want to distribute – simply add the sufficient number of modules. Choose between single or twin module versions – with one or two tuners, providing one or two output channels.

Triax TMB multiband amplifier - for small-size headend installation

Triax TMBA small-size headend installation, which comes in a selection of four different sizes; some are terrestrial-only or a combination of satellite and terrestrial; others include FM radio as well. DAB radio is also an option. TMB is a multiband amplifier that is perfect for equalising signal levels. Separate inputs for each band.

From your customers point of view, the TMB is simply a small box – mounted somewhere convenient – which allows them (perhaps with your help) to distribute a number of terrestrial channels and one or two satellite polarities. Can be adjusted along the way to fit changing needs – or to accommodate new channels.

TMB is preferred in small and medium-sized terrestrial distribution systems. It is also a practical solution when you want to minimise the cost of components – and the complete installation cost. Comes with a built-in power supply.

Triax TCM-08 - a single analogue modulator unitHere is a headend that is the ideal solution for a number of private cable systems, hotels, motels, apartment blocks and institutions. In short, it is a compact 8-channel modulator designed for easy mounting, simple operation and a satisfying price/performance ratio. Because of A/V sources coming from regular set top boxes, this modulator delivers high quality RF channels into a distribution network.

The compact dimensions of the TCH 600 basic unit make it possible to install the unit under a staircase or in the hotel reception.

Triax TAS and TCH 600- for analogue reception and distribution

TAS.If you are looking for an easy way to amplify one, two, three ... or perhaps 38 individual channels – using modules of this single-channel amplifier will put a smile on your face. Each TAS module zooms in on the very channel you want to boost, while effectively filtering out noise and interference from adjacent, neighbouring channels. Quite convincing, actually.

TAS headends is a modular system which can be used as an extension to existing units. Often used in rather small-scale installations. But don’t let that dictate what you do...

TCH 600. - a compact headend for analogue reception and distribution.

This is a perfect play-it-safe solution – with an initial system investment that can be limited to present or recognised needs only. No need to spend money on excess functionality or capacity to be prepared for possible future change of use. TCH 600 is made up of flexible building blocks and an expandable foundation.

The TCH 600 modules have channel converters that prevent interference (dual signals) from nearby tv transmitters. Also, modulator modules help integrate video or dvd signals, surveillance cameras or other closed circuit applications.

Signal-to-noise. Carrier-to-noise.- what’s the difference?

Elsewhere in this catalogue you will find a list of phrases often used in relation to headend installations. But two of them, Signal-to-Noise and Carrier-to-Noise (S/N and C/N), deserve further attention because … what is the difference?

The two terms S/N and C/N are often used to indicate the quality of headend systems and SMATV networks – but the terms are often used at random. This can lead to wrong conclusions.

To distinguish the two, let us first examine the difference between a signal and a carrier. A signal is the electromagnetic content of a video signal, and high quality signals are needed to produce high quality pictures and sound on a tv-set. In all distribution systems however, signals are modulated into carrier waves and the wave is the carrier or “the vehicle” used to distribute the signal.

So, a signal-to-noise ratio is a measurement of electronic noise in the video signal, and it is in practical situations the most meaningful ratio to use. Noise is however introduced, every time a signal is processed, and the carrier-to-noise ratio is an expression of noise added by the modulator and in the distribution system, amplifiers and other active components. Noise inflicted on the carrier will of course also add noise to the signal (and decrease both C/N and S/N ratios), but ONLY the signal-to-noise ratio will include the noise inherited in the signal from the very start and originating from video cameras and other types of recording equipment.

Each new component in a distribution system adds noise – and thereby reduces the S/N ratio. The C/N must always be higher than the S/N required. Our experience at Triax is that the C/N ratio has to be at least 4 dB higher than the desired S/N ratio.

So how can you achieve this? The simple answer: Minimise noise at the front – often at the headend – of the distribution system. A rule of thumb is to use a quality headend with a high C/N ratio and output level – and low noise figures. This reduces the number of amplifiers needed – and thus improves the overall C/N ratio of the entire system.

Real-life terms and phrases often used in relation to headend installations. We include them here, simply to let you know what we mean, when we say MCPC

AttenuationThe measure of the weakening of a signal (loss) that occurs as it travels through a device or transmission medium (e.g. radio waves through the atmosphere, an electrical signal through a cable).

Attenuation is usually measured in decibels (dB).

Bit Error Rate (BER)An overall measure of the quality of a received digital bit stream. It is the ratio of the number of information bits that are received in error to the total number of bits received, averaged over a period of time.

BouquetA collection of digital multimedia services marketed as a single package, often transmitted in a single data stream. See also Digital Multiplexing.

CAConditional Access. See CAS.

CAMConditional Access Module.

CAS - Conditional Access System.Common name for the decryption system either built (embedded) into the satellite receiver or performed via a CA-module inserted into a receiver CI slot (Common Interface). CAS systems are normally connected to a smart card reader to allow Pay-TV operators to control subscriber access to encrypted signals.

CICommon Interface.

C/N - Carrier-to-Noise ratio.A measure of the quality of a modulated carrier at the receiver input. It is the ratio of the power of the carrier to the power of the noise introduced in the transmission medium, measured within a specified bandwidth (usually the modulated carrier bandwidth): It is usually expressed in decibels. The higher the ratio, the better quality of the received carrier.

ChannelA band of radio frequencies assigned for a particular purpose, usually for the establishment of one complete communication link, or a path for an electrical signal. This term is often used interchangeably with transponder, but in general the channel bandwidth is less than the transponder bandwidth.

Coaxial cableConnecting cable between i.e. LNB and satellite receiver, for transmission of signals received and for supply of power to LNB unit.

Community receptionThe reception of satellite and terrestrial television and entertainment services for distribution to a group of the general public at one location (e.g. in a block of flats), or through a distribution system covering a limited area (e.g. a local cable network).

Real-life terms and phrases- we include them here

The receiving system is usually more complex with a larger antenna than that used for individual (Direct-To-Home) reception.

ConaxDigital coding/encryption method. See CAS.

Data compression/MPEG1/MPEG2/MPEG4Transmission of the present TV standard (625 lines and 50 Hz picture frequency for a PAL signal) requires a digital data amount of 216 Mbit/s. This would require transmission bandwidths that are not available either terrestrially or via satellite. Therefore a reduction of the data amount is made through data reduction. In Europe MPEG2 and soon MPEG4 are the universal standard for data compression. MPEG2 and MPEG4 are extensions of MPEG1. A transmission technique and standard for picture, graphics, sound and text as well as for data of any shape and quality.

FrequencyPhysical quantity indicates the number of cycles per second, measured in Hertz (Hz).

HertzThe unit used for measuring frequency.Equals number of cycles per second. See Frequency.

InterferenceAny undesired signal that tends to interfere with the reception of radio waves. It can be caused by transmissions within the same satellite system, by transmissions within other satellite systems that use the same frequencies, or from ground-based sources. (e.g. point-to-point radio links, car ignition noise, etc.).

Intermediate frequency (IF)The frequency range from the satellite cannot be transmitted via a cable and is therefore converted to the intermediate frequency range from 950 to 2050 MHz by the LNB. This allows for transmission and processing in the receiver.

Ku-bandUsed to refer to a range of frequencies that are available for use by satellite communication systems at around 30 GHz for the uplink and 20 GHz for the downlink.

Low bandThe lower part of the Ku-band downlink frequency range, from 10.7-11.7 GHz.

MATV - Master Antenna Television.More households receiving signals from a master antenna.

Real-life terms and phrases- we include them here

MCPC - Multiple Channel Per Carrier.Refers to the multiplexing of a number of digital channels (video programmes, audio programmes and data services) into a common digital bit stream, which is then used to modulate a single carrier that conveys all of the services to the end user. The single carrier supports multiple communication channels, hence the phase multiple channel per carrier. The term MCPC is frequently used in the context of DVB systems, where the composite digital signal is referred to a a transport stream.

Modulation with 22 KHzFor switching between 13/18 Volt and between 2 LNBs. When using universal LNB. For switching from lower to higher range (11.70-12.75 GHz).

ModulatorOutput terminal on the satellite receiver or video tape recorder, for connection to the TV by means of an aerial cable.

MulticryptDVB conditional access option based on a detachable Conditional Access (CA) module, which is supplied by the service provider to each subscriber. The CA module is connected to the subscriber via a standardised interface (the DVB Common Interface).Multicrypt has the advantage that the same IRD can be used to receive services from providers using different and incompatible conditional access systems.

NoiseAny undesired electrical disturbance in a circuit or communication channel. When combined with a received signal, it affects the receiver’s ability to correctly reproduce the original signal. Also known as thermal noise.

Noise figureA method for quantifying the electrical noise generated by a practical device. The noise figure is the ratio of the noise power at the output of a device to the noise power at the input to the device, where the input noise temperature is equal to the device, where the input noise temperature is equal to the reference temperature (290 K).The noise figure is usually expressed in decibels.

Pay-Per-View (PPV)The purchasing of programmes and services by a television viewer or service user on an individual basis (e.g. televised coverage of a sports event).Access to purchased material is controlled by means of a Conditional Access System. See CAS.

PolarisationFor better utilisation of the available frequency bands the satellites transmit adjacent programmes, with opposite polarisation (horizontal and vertical or circular left or circular right). Reception of both types of polarisation requires two single LNBs or a V/H-LNB (Universal LNB).

QPSKQuattro Phase Shift Keying. A digital modulation scheme that conveys data by changing, or modulating, the phase of a reference signal (the carrier wave).

Smart card readerA device that allows insertion of a Pay-TV subscription smart card to allow access to the encrypted services on a Pay-TV operator. Also requires the corresponding CAS to be available.

SMATV - Satellite Master Antenna Television.Collective television reception and distribution system serving a local population of users collocated in a block of flats, a hotel or other group-housing complex.SMATV systems use one or more high quality, centrally located antennas to receive the satellite signals, plus UHF and/or VHF antennas to receive local terrestrial broadcast services. The satellite and terrestrial signals are distributed to the end-users via a dedicated cable distribution network. Several different cable distribution architectures are possible.

S/N - Signal-to-Noise ratio.A measure of the quality of an electrical signal, usually at the receiver output. It is the ratio of the signal level to the noise level, measured within a specified bandwidth (typically the bandwidth of the signal). It is usually expressed in decibels. The higher the ratio, the better quality of the signal. See also C/N.

TransponderCarries out the processing of one or more programmes from a satellite, i.e. reception of data from earth station, amplification and radiation/transmission back to earth.A transmitter-receiver device that transmits signals automatically when it receives pre-determined signals. The term satellite transponder refers to a transmitter-receiver subsystem on-board the satellite that uses a single high power amplification chain and processes a particular range of frequencies (the transponder bandwidth). There are many transponders on a typical satellite, each capable of supporting one or more communication channels.

ViaccessDigital coding/encryption method. See CAS.

Discover the fortune that lies hidden

in your future installations

- a general introduction to Triax fibre optics”We can just imagine the smiles that this system will

interference, tap or switch gain flatness and so on

when distributing satellite signals to multiple outlets.

To sum up, we were totally impressed with how well

this new technology performed in a real world setup.”
