Effect of some chemical and physical treatments in
germination of seeds of Prunus spinosa L & Prunus ursina L.
The experiments were done about germination of seeds of P.spinosa L and
P.ursina L. in Lattakia agricultural research center The ripe fruits were
collected from Kasab,Jablah and Al-Hafah, during 2006 – 2007 – 2008.
The planting was performed in laboratories on Agar medium. Inside
germination incubator. Also, the planting was done in field inside
polyethylene sacks. The results of this work showed that low temperature
(5- 10) has the major effect in overcoming dormancy, the light had positive
effect on germination of Prunus pinosa & Prunus ursine discoated seeds
and in germination of coated seeds and discoated seeds of P.ursina whereas
the percentages of embryo germination were high in both light and dark.
However, the embryo ability of germination in dark was higher than it in
light. Seed coats (endocarp, epicarp) had negative role in germination. The
results of chemical treatments showed no role of different concentrations of
sulfuric acid (5 – 10 - 25 – 50 - 100 %) for periods (15 – 30 – 60 - 120 m)
on germination of coated seeds of both species. Also, there was no role of
gebrilic acid concentrations (500 – 1000 - 4000 - 6000 ppm) for periods
(10s and 1 h) in germination of coated seeds of both types. Whereas, the
same concentrations of gebrilic acid for 10 seconds had positive role on
discoated seed germination as for two types.
Seed treatment with same concentrations caused deformities I different
parts of discoated seeds.
In case of sawing in nursery, stratification of both types of coated seeds at
4 Cuu, for 2-3 months had positive role in germination, In comparison with
control and samples treated for only one month. When sawed in an
incubator at 10 Cuu, stratification for 2-3 months in natural conditions
showed positive effect on germination in comparison with control samples
and samples treated for one month only.
