seafogoutport community + water facility
newfoundland's historical and cultural ties to water are apparent everywhere in its landscape and outport communities. however, today's modern world identifies more issues with the province's direct ties to water than benefits. proper drinking water is not accessible locally for many communities, and they are forced to turn to other alternatives to satisfy their basic needs. the province has struggled with distribution of services and infrastructure for outport communities, and as a result, their populations have severely declined causing a low-tax base for any municipal funding projects.

filtration components
the building consists of water collection, filtration, and storage systems. The roof's area is maximized in order to collect rainwater, as well as proiding shelter community-oriented activites.
access to the fire truck is prioritized in the programmatic organization. Building access is shared by locals picking up potable water as well.

from contaminated sources, lack of government funds for aging infrastructure, and isolation of communities, all of these factors contribute to the concerns over water supply and distribution.
major issues outlined in the rural water report released in 2014 include changes required for management and operation of systems for increased protection for water sources, infrastructure maintenance and replacement, proper education for water intake and filtration operators, and focus on sustainability and conservation.

The rooftop of the proposed building rises and depresses depending on the programmatic function of the area below. The roof is designed to crease and create sloped rainwater collection over service areas of the building.
Vernacular materials are used within the building allowing it to bring new forms and technologies to the community while preventing it from being entirely alienated.

gagarin chair
gagarin chairwoodworking
a chair designed for the first man to orbit the earth - yuri gagarin. the design is intended to produce an infinite number of positions and uses from the modularity of the chair.
A series of sketches were made which informed the initial sketch models.
wooden formwork was created to produce the laminations.
modular plywood strips were cut for the bent laminations.
pieces were tested for sliding tolerance through tongue & groove concept.

echoeslighthouse sea hotel
The lighthouse is a beacon that extends outwards through sight and alarm. As a monolithic tower its appearance is prominent against the landscape during the day.
At night, the main purpose of a lighthouse is to alert arriving ships and voyagers through intensities of light and sound. By embracing this concept our layouts play with the intersection between different flows and waves on the beautiful Sicilian landscape to produce a plan with elements that interact with one another. The intended site branches into two paths: one path descends slightly and remains on the cliffs, while another descends dramatically and touches the sea.

all the rooms of the landscape hotel are situated on the fringe between land and sea. each room extends either by cantilevers or by piers over the water and onto it. both share relationship qualities with the sea and the presence of being beside it.
the elevation difference produces a key interaction with their sightlines and provides interesting atmosphere for potential recreational activities.

baysurban context: tower design
located on a critical site in liberty village, this project redefines the office tower of the city in an attempt to identify and integrate creative industries into the workplace.
the divide between the liberty village area and the downtown core of toronto is a concern for the city planning. High-rise residential developments make-up the majority of the construction for the area, and will inevitably contribute negatively to the area's population.
this project proposes the combination of an active public market space integrated with a promising industry for the area, to create a building that will promote the city's positive growth through the actions on a smaller scale.

∞
site context
the liberty village site has direct access to the expected go train development. The area adjacent to these tracks has potnetial for long park spaces and recreational activities.

tower plan configurations
office plan configurations
modular fabricated allows for a customized tower space with opportunities for many layouts.
the lower office levels maintain a relationship with the street between the buildings. creative offices, studios, and new industries have more potentials to share spaces with one another or to have a large area where they can occupy as one unit.
∞
aerial rendering
the structure acts as a porous entity in the midst of the site. the small pockets of spaces allows it to invite and encourage various activities for commuters, local residents, and visitors for the urban market atmosphere.
bays urban context: tower design
using existing routes and axes from the adjacent buildings and roads, the form was developed to take into consideration movement to and from the go station as well as the proposed park boardwalk. The structure of the tower is designed to reduce its footprint on the site to eliminate imposing shadows on other buildings.
∞
northeast entrance
the main entrance of the building is designed as walkways between the concrete shear walls of the structure.
layers of columns and shear walls divide the paths between the exterior and interior spaces.
interconnected spaces
bays urban context: tower design
spaces are layered in order to interact with one another, allowing building flows between programs without creating vulnerable service areas and private spaces.
street sections
walking through the centre of the street, the experience changes as the spaces protrude and retract based on the functions of program.

experiential walkthrough vignettes decaysite restoration & landscaping
before the quarry, there existed natural habitats and species that thrived on their own. Some time after the quarry's operations began, the rehabilitation of the site became an increasing concern to the region and anyone involved with the process. from life, to death, and again, to a revitalization, the quarry's site was tied to a cycle, very similar to the natural environment around and within it.

∞
the site is moulded by the quarry's physical features, with focus on the action of sinking deeper, or going below to attain something greater.
the result is a typology of structure that utilizes the adjacent ground as its main support and all that comes in between dwells and ventures within it.

species map
fungi, and many other decomposing species, work in the same way to regain new life from the old, former death. working in a similar cycle, they have the potential to transform the abandoned and considered waste into a phenomenon that holds more life than it would have while thriving. logs, stumps, and even corpses of animals create spaces for new species that work together to decompose the matter.

underground transit stationsibi group
the transportation architecture team at ibi group specializes in above and underground transit stations.
i worked at ibi group for two terms and was assigned mainly to one large-scale project - the olrt confederation line. the project consisted of three underground stations in design development and were undergoing the transition into construction phases.
during my time at ibi, i was responsible for 3d modelling of the stations in revit based on the proposed designs as well as annotating, organizing, and creating revit views and sheets for each submission.

transit architecture & designzwarts & jansma architects
zwarts & jansma architects specializes in transit architecture including: lrt stations, traffic bridges, pedestrian bridges, highways, tunnels, and sound barriers
my short four-month term at zja architects equipped me with design & modelling experience of transit architecture. i had the opportunity to work on many different bridges where structure and detailing became one of the first and foremost considerations of the design-work.
