Lecture 01 : Safe and Safety

Safety : Safety is about a practice of ABC where A=Always, B=be, C=Careful.

Objectives of Industrial Safety : Improve the overall standard of safety and health at work. Guarantee the improvement of the health of employee in their work space. Integrate the concept of safety and health in the overall management of the enterprise. Develop good manufacturing practices with emphasis on efficiency and safety. Understand the harmful effects of industrial hazards. Define the relationship between hazard and risk. Explore the routes of exposure to industrial hazards. Shed lights on type of toxicity by industrial hazards. Know the most toxic environmental hazardous substances.

Industrial safety :Industrial safety refers to reduce the risk of injury or loss and danger to persons, property from the industrial hazards.

Industrial hazards : Hazard is a term associated with a substance, That is likely to cause injury to a personnel, or One which may lead to loss of property, products etc; or A substance that might prove fatal to the personnel.

Accident :Is an unplanned, uncontrolled, Unexpected, and unplanned event which result in a harm or loss of any kind such as injury to people or damage to equipment. Example : an employee tripped over a cable fill & down broke his leg.

Incident / Near miss : Is an unwanted & unplanned event that had the potential to Cause harm or loss of any kind such as injury to people or damage to equipment , but it didn't result in any kind of loss. Example : an employee tripped over a cable fill but without any injuries or any loss happening at all.

Common causes of accident : Unsafe physical working conditions for example unguarded machines, poor illumination,

exposure to chemicals, defectives wires etc Unsafe work methods like exceeding safe speed limit, unauthorized operation, unsafe postures,

not using protection materials etc Maladjustment between machine and men physical strength, intellectual demands etc. Poor supervision

Industrial safety system : An industrial safety system is a countermeasure crucial in any hazardous plants such as (oil and gas plants, nuclear plants, energy plant, RMG, Textile etc.). They are used to protect human, plant, and environment in case the process goes beyond the control margins. As the name suggests, these systems are not intended for controlling the process itself but rather protection. Process control is performed by means of process control systems (PCS) and is interlocked by the safety systems so that immediate actions are taken should the process control systems fail.

Common Hazards in Industry : Fire hazards Chemical hazards Electrical hazards Mechanical hazards

Fixed the Flaws in managing safety : Ensuring availability of proper First Aid, Ambulance, Conveyance facilities Deployment of skilled and trained employees for specific assignments Usage of proper Personal Safety Equipment Proper supervision by competent authorities Prior discussion in the routine Safety Committee Meeting for arriving proper strategy Decision on outsourcing the assignment to some other agency
