We began 2014 with renewed hopes. The nextOctober will celebrate our first 20 years ofexistence. Two decades working to improve oureconomic and social environment throughinnovation and development.

Since its beginning, CARTIF has invested inresearch in new technologies that help maintainand preserve our vast heritage. Therefore, thisissue is dedicated to review some of the projectswe have developed and have served to improvethe protection and care of our Artistic and CulturalHeritage.

We also analyze the progress in the WTANKproject, in which CARTIF and four Spanishcompanies have joined forces to develop a newproduct that allows them to improve their positionin the water trading. New modular water tankswith improved properties that may be marketedin a couple of years, represent the symbiosisbetween innovation and competitive advantage.

This is our goal for this year 20: continue addingvalue to business and society.

This workshop was the first one dedicated to economicand financial aspects in this kind of edification. Theexperts exposed how it's possible to build a near zeroconsumption building with full warranty for the buyer,and providing all the values and opportunities involved

in the construction sector.

CARTIF researchers have proposed to adapt the Passivhausstandard in the energy refurbishment of historic buildings,

through the European project 3ENCULT.

This workshop, gently organized by ASTRALE, served toshare best practices in twenty innovative LIFE projects.There were also a presentation on the latest EU policydevelopments by Hervé Martin, of LIFE Programme andGuido de Wilt, of the European Commission DG Environment

Dr. Dolores Hidalgo, CARTIF researcher, explained theresults of the new control strategy and urban trafficmanagement (GCTU) based on prevention and control inreal-time traffic flows that create episodes of acute pollution,

ELECTED BOARD OF SMART CITY VYPSmart City VyP it's a partnership

formed by the Spanishmunicipalities of Valladolid and

Palencia, and more than twentycompanies. CARTIF handles the

technical secretariat and it is themain research and technological

partner.

This Smart City it's a special case inthe framework of Smart City topic,

because met two cities workingtogether to find projects made with

the collaboration of public andprivate entities. Currently, the

members of VyP are involved in fiveongoing projects, with a total budget

of 14,5 M€.

With the successful implementationand testing of a Business-to-Business(B2B) IT marketplace for electromobilityservices, the EU-funded project GreeneMotion reached an importantmilestone to demonstrate a European-wide interoperable electromobiltysystem. The marketplace allows energycompanies, car manufacturers andcharging point providers to share andintegrate services on one common ITplatform.

CARTIF is one of the partners of GreeneMotion project which is an initiativethat aims to promote electromobilityin several European regions.

As a result of this large experience, CARTIF hasparticipated in several projects co-financed bythe EU, to develop best practices in heritagepreservation. Within the POCTEP RENERPATHProject, leading by CARTIF, was established anenergy rehabilitation methodology based onnew and non- intrusive techniques for theenergy analysis. The result was a less energyconsumption in the maintenance and use ofthese heritage buildings and the activation ofthe involved sectors. CARTIF's team appliedthese developments to public and privateheritage buildings in Spanish and Portugueseregions.

FP7 Project 3ENCULT, has a different approach.This Project bridges the gap betweenconservation of historic buildings and climateprotection, which is not an antagonism at all:

historic buildings will only surviveif maintained as living space.Energy efficient retrofit is usefulfor structural protection as wellas for comfort reasons - comfortfor users and "comfort" for

heritage collections. 3ENCULTwill demonstrate the feasibility

of "Factor 4" to "Factor 10"

reduction in energy demand, depending on thecase and the heritage value. CARTIF is workingin the case study 7, Industrial EngineeringSchool-Béjar/Salamanca (Spain).

Other ongoing project is INTERREG SUDOESHBUILDINGS. This project responds to theneed to boost R &D, competitiveness, andensure sustainability SUDOE Space, promotingenergy efficiency and efficient publicmanagement.

The proposal to create a system of integratedbuilding management requires a number ofdevelopments related to R & D relating to thesensors, Internet of things and cloud computingand will be specified in both models as newtools aimed control and decision making.

The implementation of the project area will bethe historic building, and it' ll generate,transferring results, increased competitionbetween companies that use the projectmanagement system. For the whole of theconservation sector, the project will helptransform intensive sector labor and low-tech,a sector supported by the latest technology.

This sector accounts for almost 0.5% of GDP inSpain and clearly influences the cultural tourismsector, which is a major economic driver in thearea SUDOE, and partial support adjustmentin the construction sector energy orientingtoward rehabilitation, the functional and towardspreventive conservation. Finally better achievethe objectives of the 2020 strategy on energyefficiency applied to the building.

Virtual restoration of polychromeOne of the last projects developed by CARTIFin Cultural Heritage preservation is a projectionsystem in the emblematic Romanic church ofSanta María of Mave (Palencia, Spain). The goalis to project all the paintings that are scatteredin different temples of the region in the sameplace. This geographic has the highestconcentration of Romanesque monuments inthe world

In most cases, the polychrome paintings thatdecorated heritage buildings no longer exist or

are reduced to mereremnants. These factsdecontextualize thesites in their historicaland artistic evolution,distort the intentionunder which they wereconceived, and hampertheir accomplishment.

C u r r e n t r e c o v e r ymethods are restricted

to the stabilization of the remains in theirpresent status, requiring a lot of completelymanual work that is expensive and almostunrelated to the use of new technologies. Three-dimensional digitalization and modelling isproved to be the basis for the virtual recoveryof paintings in a significant edifice. To do so,CARTIF presents an innovative methodologythat allows the 3D geometric information of asite (captured using a laser scanner) to becombined with specially designed 2D artisticimages. The resulting 3D digital models canthen be focused, with high efficiency projectors,on the equivalent area of the original site, andalso used as raw material to compose a video-

projection without perspective effects toemulate, with due rigour, the primitiveappearance, its evolution along time, the effectsof the deterioration, or other interesting aspects.

the projectWTANK: development of a newsystem for the construction of highcapacity modular tanks with improvedproperties

CARTIF is working to develop a resin materialreinforced with fiberglass, with nanosizedfillers added, to improve the mechanicalproperties of the plaques which tanks aremanufactured

In addition to increased capacity, the projectteam works in other functionalities, as easierand cheaper transport, a quick mountingand the possibility of change the location.The last of the improvements consists ofapplying a coating with photocatalyticproperties to remove lichens, fungi andmosses.

The logistic improvements will get preparingspecifically sized plates to place them insidesea containers which can be send by shipall over the world. The plates will have alimited weight for better handling.

WTANK Project started in 2012 and will finishin 2014. During the last six months, a pilotlarge tank capacity will be built to apply thetechnology and prove the results of theproject.

Surface storage tanks are manufactured in almostall materials used for structures, although steeland concrete are the most used. In some occasions,if the application requires, these materials arecoated with other polymeric materials. In addition,polymeric materials reinforced with fiberglass arealso used for tanks up to 300 m3. Also, Aluminumand other nonferrous metals are used, when theirspecific properties are necessary.

CARTIF and three Spanish companies(Aguambiente, Indemat and Toro Equipment) havejoined forces to develop a new product that allowsthem to improve their position in the water trading.

WTANK project focuses on finding new polymericmaterials with advanced properties to beimplemented in a new system for the manufactureof large capacity tanks, between 1,000 and 2,000m3. These tanks will be modular, manufacturedwith reinforced polymeric materials, low weight,easy and safe installation and cost competitive.

It was 2002. The researchers from the Roboticsand Computer Vision Division of CARTIF wereworking in different industrial projects usingshort and long range scanners, when theyrealized about the possibilities of thesetechnologies applied to Heritage conservation.It was the beginning of a research line thatprogressively expanded to remote monitoring and control, comprehensive management andenergy efficiency. All of these addressed acommon goal: facing the real use of newtechnologies in older buildings.

Twelve years later, with a large experience inthis field, the researchers involved in these RTDlines talk about their impressions. Pedro M.Lerones and Luis A. Bujedo agree on thepending challenge is the inclusion of newtechnologies into Heritage action plans, which could improve the tasks of maintenance,protection and restoration, also stimulating theeconomic activity in cities and regions.

Researchers agree that a long way to adapt theparameters and common standards inresidential construction to the historicaledification have to be routed. But, what are thereasons? Pedro M. Lerones thinks it is becausethere still traditionalist inertia in the sectorsfocused on Cultural Heritage, although stepsare increasingly being taken to approach digitaltechnologies. The UE has included specificfunding lines from V Framework Programme.

Jesús Samaniego believes that it's also influencedby the lack of common rules in this field. Thisis one of the main goals of 3ENCULT project,as remember José Luis Hernández. The generalidea is to meet all the available information anddevelop a CEN regulation for the historic buildingrehabilitation.

to be performed. A cathedral it's not the sameas a little rural church, or even a palace or castleconverted into a hotel. The challenge is convincethe owners (sometimes private, sometimespublic) that investing in new technology has aneconomic return while ensuring thesustainability of cultural assets.

The results of the RTD projects (as the onesin CARTIF is involved), are helpful in makingdecisions about the actions to be taken, aswell as the allocation proper resources. Thus,

the technical and economic feasibility ofactions is guaranteed.

This will help to understand the Cultural Heritageas source of economy and employment, andincrease the quantity of private patrons.

Current technology allows optimize resources,save energy, protect ancient legacies andgenerate wealth for countries and regions thathave been keeping them up today. This is stilla commitment of CARTIF researchers, who willkeep working on it with absolute conviction.

From the beginning, Dorotea stood out amongthe select group of women who started theirresearch work in Spain at the end of thetwenties. She made a huge effort to producean excellent piece of research work and was afine, although curtailed, example of a femalescientist in the XX century, demonstrating thatthe capacity to conduct scientific research wasnot exclusive to men.

Despite her short trajectory, she stood out asa notable scientist in the field of “Ramanspectroscopy”, named after C.V. Raman (1888-1970), the Nobel Laureate for Physics (1930)for his discovery of secondary radiation. Thistechnique, which continues to be used today,enables the molecules of chemical species tobe identified and can be applied to differentproblems of scientific, medical, pharmacologicaland industrial interest. Dorotea was a pioneerin the introduction of this technique to Spain.

In light of the recently announced Burrell Lawin 1910, granting women free access touniversities in Spain, and with the support ofher father (subsequently minister of educationin the Second Spanish Republic) and her mother,who both believed in equal opportunities, sheand her three sisters studied at university.Dorotea studied chemistry and became knownas one of the most advanced scientists in the

field of spectroscopy applied to chemicalanalysis. Among other merits, she was one ofthe few women to receive a scholarship fromYale University, which at the time only acceptedwomen with an exceptional academic record.Upon her return to Spain, after a period inAustria, she continued her research studiesand obtained professorship in physics andchemistry in the Lope de Vega Institute inMadrid, where she remained until she decidedto go into exile in France once the Spanish CivilWar had started. She never returned toresearch.

Spanish science suffered an enormous setbackwith the outbreak of the Civil War, from whichit would take years to recover, and, when it didit, it excluded women. With examples such asthat of Dorotea Barnés, the new woman whohad been a symbol of the Republic disappeared,since the new regime even deleted them fromthe files. The new woman faded into oblivion;the worst punishment of all.

Philip Ball is an English science writer. He is aneditor for the journal Nature for over 20 years, forwhom he continues to write regularly. He now writesa regular column in Chemistry World. He holds a

degree in chemistry from Oxford and a doctoratein physics from Bristol University.

Curiosity had a broader span of meaning in the17th century than it usually has today. Ball shows

that there wasn't just one kind of science in the17th century: Bacon, Galileo, Boyle and Newton

were all doing different things, appropriate to theirrespective disciplines. All were successful in their

own domains, and progress was made, but youshouldn't believe their manifestos.

It is an eight-part 2010 TV miniseries, adaptedfrom Ken Follett's novel of the same name. Likethe book on which it is based, the movie is focusedon the construction of a cathedral in the fictitioustown of Kingsbridge during a tumultuous periodof English history known as The Anarchy in the12th century.
