FAVA 2.2 Uses a variety of art materials and techniques to model, construct, and compose original artworks. (See Introduction: Matrix.) FAVA 2.3 Creates artworks (drawings, paintings, pottery, sculptures, prints, fiber arts, and mixed media arts) emphasizing one or more of the arts elements, e.g., warm and cool colors, line, shape, form, texture, value, and the principles of movement, rhythm, repetition (pattern), and spatial techniques (overlapping, size placement of shapes). FAVA 2.7 Applies concepts and ideas from another discipline and its topics as sources of ideas for own artworks. (See Introduction: Matrix.) FAVA 2.8 Describes red, yellow, and orange as warm colors and green, blue, and violet as cool colors. FAVA 2.18 Discusses why people make art.
Please note that all objectives are not covered in one session.
Ongoing Art Objectives: Develop construction (cutting, gluing,
manipulating, etc.), drawing, painting, etc., skills (Application, Synthesis; ongoing objective, see art matrix).
Demonstrates proper care and safe use of art materials and tools (Application Evaluation; ongoing objective; 2.5).
Appraise/Evaluate artwork for quality (thoughtfulness & carefulness) and accuracy (following directions & project guidelines) (ongoing).
Project Specific Objectives:1. Create a kufi; an African hat.2. Integrate the warm and cool
colors and the geometric and organic shapes into the kufi.
3. Create two patterns; one with warm colors the other with cool colors (2.2, 2.3).
4. Create two patterns, one with geometric shapes and one with organic shapes.
5. Identify, describe, and categorize the warm and cool colors (2.8).
6. Discuss and determine why people make art (and hats) (2.18).
7. Locate Africa on a map (geography connection).
8. Draw Africa using the letters “C”, “U”, and “V”.
The students are asked to observe and make comments about two patterns.
A review of the previous project regarding warm and cool colors is referred to and pointed out for the students to recognize and draw connections to the current lesson.
The teacher will give step by step instructions (guided practice) for the students to follow as they draw the two patterns. The students will follow the step by step instructions (guided practice) and then create their own patterns (one using only geometric shapes and one only with organic shapes).
When the patterns are painted, they may only use the warm colors for one pattern and the cool colors for the other pattern.

HomeworkProjects:
Questions regarding the Patterns1. Compare and contrast the two
patterns: What do you notice about the two patterns?
2. Are the two patterns the same or different?
3. How are they different?4. Why are the patterns colored
with those colors that you see?Questions regarding the color wheel1. What are the warm colors?2. Why are they the warm colors?3. What are the cool colors?4. Why are they the cool colors?5. What are geometric shapes?6. Why are they called geometric
shapes?7. What are organic shapes?8. Why are they called organic
shapes?Other Useful Questions:1. What colors represent hot things?
Cold things?2. What is the color of the sun? Fire?3. What is the color of cool water?4. What are the colors of fun and
happy feelings?5. What are the colors of sad or lonely
feelings?6. Can art be functional? Does art
have a practical use?
Pairing and peer tutoring is used to assist those students in need of special help.
Low:A simplified…mostly completed pattern student to complete. Warm and cool color markers are separated so the student will not mix the warm colors with the cool colors.Average: A partially drawn pattern for the student to complete. High: The student must complete both patterns.
1. Worksheets, tests, and practice sessions on the warm and cool colors.
2. The culminating activity: Two patterns with the correct warm and cool colors for each pattern.
3. Observation.
A review of the current lesson (what they should be able to do and what they are to know) is shared as well as what will be taught the next time in art…
Connection from previous lesson: The warm and cool colors from the previous project will be applied to this African hat project.

Look at the walls inside your home. Determine if they are they painted with warm colors or cool colors?Write down and report your findings to Mr. Glorvigen next week.
Additional HomeworkIdentify and label the countries on the African map worksheet that the teacher has selected.Low:Homework: only identify and label two countries in Africa.Average:Homework: only identify and label four countries in Africa.High:Homework: identify and label seven countries in Africa.
Kufi: The African Hat 2
Note: When students (advanced or otherwise) complete this project (the African hat) before the class ends they will prepare for the next class project by independently creating a paper weave. Directions and example are on the board for the students to follow. If the weaving is completed correctly, a checkerboard pattern should be present. This exercise will prepare them and help me see who are the peer tutors and project helpers for next week.
